I'm actually concerned at how winded you got in this series. Having said that I think you're fantastic and in much better shape than I am.
well done sensei seth , you awesome , and judo is beast .
So, how do you rank Judo now? 😉
Well done Seth, amazing video, here's a nugget of advice you have an amazing Uchi Mata, combine that with Kouchi Gari you will have more success with your takedowns
Seth, I find it insane how many times You enter a tournament with barely any formal training, take a MEDAL and leave DISAPPOINTED! Every time You do extremely well, exceeding expectations and shocking onlookers - but You don't seem happy about it. I think there's too much perfectionism and self-deprecation there. I myself have done that to myself for years and now need therapy. Please be proud of Your achievements and take good care of Yourself. Thanks for all the great content.
"That sucks. That was beautiful." Perfect judo response to the loss. Congrats!
That is indeed very judo!
The fact you got third place tells us you’re a very well rounded martial artist and physically athletic. It’s becoming pretty regular for you to rock up and do well in a new martial art
Honestly the level of competition was really low
@@joatanpereira4272 it doesn’t matter being a beginner most people wouldn’t have touched the blackbelts. He was in the heavyweight novice division so obviously he wasn’t go up against the more experienced guys and one was a BJJ black belt.
No offense but judo tournament in usa is like white belt tournament in judo Europe and Japan
@@dhimankalita1690I am a judoka and I agree on this statement korea Japan and Europe are wear the good judokas are at
Grappling white belt is a phenomenal martial artist.
Always a pleasure to see an enthusiastic coach who is passionate about his sport.
He was so there for it an Seth, really awesome to see.
What's his sport specifically

You can always try Judo. It's one of the World's most popular sports and most cities around the World will have a Judo school.
I've done Muay Thai, MMA, BJJ in my 40 years of living this life. I started with Judo. It still remains the hardest form of physical activity I've ever done ever. All the other martial arts I've mentioned above can be really tough when you train hard. But man I still get PTSD when I recall my days of training Judo. I love it still but I'm a bit too broken in places now to really wanna get into it again.
i agree. it is BRUTAL. randori = recipe for injuries, but it is essential part of training. Constant shifting body weight from one leg to another and turning, trying to sweep, throw and/or grabbing the opponents pants, gi, or belt while he does the same = quite high risk. BUT if you train like that for years..... ? => the untrained "tough" guy you meet in the street and absolutely wants a fight (unarmed) you can not flee from ?? He is going to have a VERY bad day/week/month/year.
@@reductio1000Especially if it’s winter and he’s wearing a jacket and the tough guy is wearing a jacket. Over with
does not even have to be winter, but i agree : a jacket is like a gi , easy to grab. but let's assume you are in florida, hot summer, and the guy only wears a t-shirt, and shorts. As a judoka you will still grab that t-shirt , it will tear somewhat , but the neck stitched part will NOT, and provide you with enough pulling power like a gi. The short pants ? Well that is just like grabbing the belt. The only way to neutralise a judoka's abilities is to wrestle in a wrestling singlet. @@emperortime4380
@@emperortime4380 "Street" is a messy place, let's not romanticize anyone's chances from doing sports. But judo sure brings something to that table.
Agree. I've my broken my ankle, different minor traumas. I have a passion for this sport, but the chance of getting injuries grows as you get older.
Awesome job! It was such a pleasure meeting you and watching you compete!
Appreciate you stepping out there and competing with us!
I love how in all these videos you don't shy away from the bits where you're nervous and doubt yourself. It honestly makes the whole thing more compelling to watch
Oh boy, this kind of work really requires courage and motivation, which is very rare nowadays. You are like a role model for me. You are not afraid to try new things and this is one of the most important things I like about you Seth. This week's video is also great as always.❤❤❤
Martial art has helped me in many aspects of my life and almost never fighting. I admit that I actively avoid fights, but I’m strong, healthy, confident, and I don’t get hurt badly when I fall. The last one I credit to my judo training.
This is false and untrue
the most vivid memory i have of a judo tournanent is a fight i had against a smaller, less experienced judoka: I was a 1.74 m fourteen years old green belt going against a yellow-orange belt that was probably 1.65 max, so I got cocky and tought it would be an easy fight.
i got stomped. I was launched in the first 5 second with a beatiful Sasae Tsurikomi Ashi that allowed my opponent to use al my inertia to send me flying into the ground, earning him a clean ippon.
in the end I had the possibility to fight and win the 4th place while he got beaten in the next fight and got 3rd, but it showed to me how this sport rewarded technicque and execution above all and how those could only earned through hard work. thank you Sensei Seth for bringing back those memories, and I can't wait to see how judo will repay your efforts. good luck!
Thanks for being such a madman for our entertainment, Seth.
At some point you should do either a recap vid of all the competitions, or a tier ranking based on the difficulty of each.
Ranking would be a great vid for sure.
This is great bro, judo is a great martial art, keep exploring and have fun! 🥋❤
Reminds me of my first judo competition ever. I was so nervous, I couldn't even hear the referee, but the feeling was so real. Thank you, Seth, and great job.
One minute you hear the words " hajime" and before you calm yourself down the ref goes " soremade" and it's all over for you😂
Honestly, as someone who has been practicing Judo for over a decade, I can say with confidence that you were phenomenal for someone with only one practice under their belt!
As a judo enthusiast and player thank you for shedding light on the sport and giving it a go. More judo vids!
That was awesome, Sensei Seth! Congrats on the bronze. Judo looks like a lot of fun.
I really love the respectful way (without being too serious about it) you approach any and all martial arts.
Great video! I used to do judo when I was younger and it's abundantly clear to me that I knew absolutely nothing at the time. Loved the mental fortitude to keep going even after you were knocked out of the first event. Especially on just a single training, this was a great performance.
Dude, it is SO COOL to watch you try all these different martial arts. By far one of my top three UA-cam channels. Always learning something new! You bring so much value to the community. Keep it up, man 👍
Also, the look on your face at the end was priceless. 😆 You're racking up quite the collection of "I'm-new-at-this-but-killed-it-anyway" medals. 🏅🥈🥉
literally just watched the last judo video where you said to be continued, pressed on the yt home button and got this :D
Great job. There is nothing more exhausting than a judo tournament. It is difficult to emulate in training. You can train a full hour class then finish with 20-30 minutes of randori and it is still nothing compared to 3-4 matches in a tournament. Great work none the less. As a side note, whenever you go down from a failed or missed throw and they are still standing, just turtle up until the ref says "mate". You are open for attacks if you try to stand up. hope to see more judo content.
Agree, I use battle rope and punching bag training to keep my arms from getting sour.
Sensei Seth thanks for the great match man! Learned a lot from rolling with you. Much love from UNC Judo 🤞🏽 15:04
Que dahora vei!
bro learning every martial arts lol..ultimate respect man
Seth's on his way to become the mixiest of martial artists.
me may skip drunken boxing
When I had my first competition as a yellow belt there wasn't a novice division, you could be up against anyone in your age, gender and weight group e.g. junior men's (16-21) under 73kg or senior woman's (16+, i believe under certain circumstances you can even enter this division at a younger age) under 61kg
I've seen guys sign up for amateur MMA fights with a week's worth of training, and it usually goes very poorly. With that said, none of them were lifelong martial artists like Sensei Seth, so I'm interested to see how this goes.
Idiots with egos. You have to hope the opponent realises early and doesn't hurt them too badly.
@theaikidoka Yep, my opinion exactly. Same thing with guys that try to spar way too hard on their first day in the gym. You kinda pull your punches at first, but if they keep going 100% speed and power despite several warnings, eventually you have to show them the error of their ways. And, in my experience, they almost never come back to the gym after that.
@@TheElbowMerchant There's a world of difference between the person that enthusiastically wants to jump in and try the full range of a new sport etc, and someone who thinks "hey, how hard can it be, I reckon I'd be awesome at it". One wants to learn, the other wants to show off. I think there was an opinion poll that found 35% of male respondents thought they could score points off Venus Williams in tennis, regardless of their previous level of experience. I'd like to see that contest, I really would - hey pal, see if you can return a 100+mph serve. Hell, can you even see it happen?
Yup. My buddy did it. He is a small guy, but superhuman strong. I was out of town while a boxer and a juijitsu black belt trained him. I was so pissed.
They basically taught him wrestling takedowns, but didn't teach him what to do after he got the guy on the ground.
He manhandled his opponent for the first two rounds, taking him doiand controlling him with ease.
The third round, his opponent (a kickboxer), knew exactly what was going to happen. He timed my buddy going for yet another takedown with a spinning back fist. It resulted in a clean knockout.
It was disappointing, because if Payton(the jui jitsu guy)would have taught him even one submission, it would have been over round one.
Judo is seriously no joke. I went from being a wrestler to a BJJ student and loved the transition. Felt the drastic decrease in intensity though. Then I started working on my Judo and omfg the difference in practice. If you haven't conditioned your strength and explosiveness, you are going to struggle during Judo sessions xD
Overall a great video. Glad to see a fellow martial artist bounce around a bit
Very true, I started Judo at 9 or 10 years old as a Junior and continued into my mid 50s.
I had a few breaks in between ( both time and bone😂), but I was always in great shape.
I did BJJ for 5 years, but nothing compares to Judo in my opinion.
You can just have a good punch up and go for a beer afterwards.
Big props to this guy. Getting out of your element and doing something different is tough.
Well done Sensei Seth, I have been doing Judo for nearly two years and it is tough, especially competitions. I have felt that exhaustion. God bless you.
Im glad you're doing Judo content. I love Judo!!!! Just started last month and been going every day they have been open. Ive also been doing Ishinn Karate with it. Im enjoying that too.
As judo player it’s nice to see you give it your all especially in a competitive at my university it’s competitions frequently so you get used to the atmosphere of it brilliant video 👍
Dude you did really well against that green belt! Props for getting out there, judo is a tough sport and competing is exhausting and mentally intense. Can relate to the tunnel vision so much.
That’s Sensei for another great vid. I just recently started Judo and am 4 weeks in. Your courage and motivation really inspired me to keep going 🙇♂️ 🙏
13:35 was very intelligent throw made him think you where going the other way while effortlessly threw him the opposite direction
Considering a lot of your sumo throws work fine in judo, I'm less surprised than you are about the wins! Congrats! 🤘💪🔥❤️
I stumbled across your channel a couple of years ago while I was looking for Judo news/ entertainment, and I have been a fan and subscriber ever since. I love your curiosity and the lengths you go to in order to satisfy that curiosity.
I am 68 years old and I have been doing Judo for 59 of those years. The sport of Judo is very demanding; however, the lessons you learn by doing the sport serve you well throughout your life. It's not just the self-defense aspects of the sport or the physical nature of it alone but also the philosophy that jagora Kano imbued into the sport: "maximum efficiency with minimum effort with mutual benefit and welfare for all".
You did pretty well for your lack of formal Judo training. Your athleticism along with the skill you obtained from other martial arts were evident throughout your matches.
I encourage you to do more Judo because I think you would be a perfect fit . Your curiosity would definitely be satisfied because the highest rank you can achieve is white belt. It is largely ceremonial but awarded to you after you received your 10th degree black belt as a reminder that you are always learning Judo and can never learn it completely.
Always will say it, Judo is pure class. Keep training!
Shout out to Austin Cook I haven’t seen him since he left the the Olympic training center. Dude would have been a shoe in for 2016. Hope he’s a rich dr now.
I’m impressed. This is not an easy transition to make.
Bruh.. you a champ for this. Going to a tournament with little training is always admirable and proves you can be a well-rounded martial artist on all ranges. Very impressive sensei.
Literally my favorite sport. Nothing is like the feeling of landing an ippon
Dude, the montage section was amazing! The music selection was so on point, and I felt like I was about to see Ralph Macchio crane kick some stunt people.
I’ve been in bjj for 3.5 years now, still a neophyte but I remember when I started to learn judo. I remember feeling like a child against a black belt who was shorter, not as strong as me who just started training judo after a layoff. After being humbled by him, I learned he was a member of the Cuban national team for almost 10 years.
Major props to you for going out of your comfort zone!
Does this mean there will be another collab with shintaro higashi

I'm so fricking proud of you man🎉 Watching your and Jesse's journeys are always awesome, bringing so much inspiration. I had to quit Shitoryu Karate because of the pandemy when i was in Turkey before about to get my black belt... Now I'm living in Japan and i found a dojo practicing Shitoryu which is actually the main dojo of the shitoryu style in the world. I'm gonna restart to Karate again after a 3 year break...
You did really well for like 1 recent practice session. Even though that was a small tournament, the competition was extremely tough. Straight up competed against 2 black belts and managed to ippon 1 of them.
But how it is possible? White belt "ipponing" black one? C'mmon it woldn't happened in BJJ.
@@jankat9337judo black is different to BJJ black. It's also much easier to nullify a weight advantage when fighting on the ground, when compared with stand up fighting.
@@jankat9337eh there’s LOTS of bjj black belts that couldn’t win a local judo or wrestling competition. In fact I would say most of them couldn’t. And when I say local I mean any regional. They would lose due to shido or get killed in the first 10 seconds . Joke of a statement . Also the reverse tends to be a more fighting chance due to judo players being more athletic
Dude, you threw a black belt! That is AWESOME!
I’ve been thinking of trying out judo as a wrestler. It looks fun and good work Seth
I train with Andrew Bitner, the 'orange belt' who beat you in the second match. He's an absolute beast. I've rolled with him 100 times and every time he smashes me.
“Yellow belt”
But the rest of the statement is true. 😂
@@raleigh_ronin Sorry sensei 🙇♂
this was great and i think an amazing first tournament! thanks for showing everyone they can do something with enough dedication and practice. much love !
You did really well ! I enjoyed a lot both of your judo videos. You steped out of your confort zone and you gave your best, and that earns you all the honor no matter how many randori you lost. I remember my first judo tournament very well, my performance was far worse than yours 😂
I've just watch your sambo video, and I enjoyed it just as much. Your humility and your desire to discover other disciplines outside your specialty are admirable.
Cheers from France
Congrats dude, you're the man for trying everything and continuing to get after it!
He’s a beast
Good job Seth!
Judo is tough but you did well.
There is a lot of sumo in your judo (belt grip etc). But it is cool. (Normally you should not hold the belt for that long buuut i like that they allowed it : D)
Seth it's a novice in Sumo lol.
We loving call this tournament “the players” tournament
We just try to have fun and let the novices grow and learn. Advanced division they’re a bit more strict but still chill
@@raleigh_ronin i like the idea. We have also sonething like "friendship tournament" or "beginner tournament" (i dont know how to translate: p) where it is more chill about the rules with griping. (It is for white-green belts) and in newaza there is no chokes or arm locks.... Only holds. Because it id for beginners to make thier first steps in competing and some of them still dont have full control... soo it is much safer to go with just holding techniques heh (it is very NO injuries friendly) heh i think this is a good concept.
I like that : D
Yo Seth, this is hands-down my FAVORITE video of yours so far!
Good job Seth! 🔥
F*ck yeah dude.... this was probably my favorite video of yours, You're gnarly.
Jesse enkamp : I entered to a bjj tournament
Sensei seth : I entered into a judo tournament
Nice job, I love Judo and it really is extremely exhausting when competing
You done very well.
I know from a previous video you rank it high now,i bet it is even higher after that!
Weird observation but at 2:20 he looks like the Gigachad meme
At the 13 second mark, I am so glad that you did not put your left hand out and break your wrist, elbow and shoulder
I loved the editing in this video! The animated vignette with the heartbeat was cool to signify your narrowing focus in matches.
But... did you _actually_ think of the origin of judo to get yourself to enter in another division or did it just make for good storytelling? :v
lol... I am always thinking about how if I am tired, I am tougher than the tiredness, but sometimes I am also a good storyteller hahah
Never give up! This is the type of video that emphasizes determination and creates motivation. Much respect for your work! Osu.
I really like this guy. He is a tryer and doesn't mind stepping out of his comfort zone.
You did really well. I like how you step out of your comfort zones, i've been doing the same and it humbles you and makes you wayyyyyy better at martial arts. Osu!
Thanks for your videos. This one reminded me of my first tournament about 50 years ago (I am now 73). I too took third place in a novice Heavy weight. It was the Chicago Open Judo Tournament at Navy Pier. First place went to a wrestler from Ohio he threw me by putting all of his 352 lbs into an Osoto Gari. The second place winner was a University of Michigan Football Player - about 245 lbs. - 6’4”- Vietnam Marine Veteran - who told me afterwards that he had won the Michigan Bench Press competition with a 450 lb Bench. I was 225 lb former college swimmer ( and 45 lbs of that was fat)- who was able to last until the end of that match, but he won on points. I did at least win one match against another 225 pounder. After Inwas in my forties I started fighting Master Judo where the matches were only 3 minutes, 5/minutes is a long time on a mat!
I think it's most impressive that you went for it and had no losses by penalties. It's very easy to get a penalty for an illegal grip and for non engagement.
I've never seen the king of the hill in a tournament before. That's awesome
It was a huge hit and was super fun! It’s a great way to get more matches with other clubs and just vibe
This was great! Not many people can just show up to a tournament in a sport they haven't practiced and take a couple of wins. You should definitely feel proud of yourself for stepping up.
Congratulations Seth!
You placed 3rd! Judo is tough! Very exhausting.
Keep at it! Between judo and sumo your getting great conditioning!
Are we gonna gloss over the fact that Seth beat a black belt? Sure he didn’t win the day but my jaw dropped lol
He’s just built different
Hey, I'm honored to have been thrown by him
Great job Seth!! Killing it dude!
Kudos to you powering through this
Well done Seth, full respect for getting fully involved.
As a judo practitioner I can confirm that the montage of the “basics?” is basically how my first 4 years of judo went because I was 12 years old and 6 foot with the closest person to my age was 11 and about 4 foot so I was put the the 16+ group.
Total respect entering a comp with next to now training and giving it your all . great work
Respect for again trying Judo after being pulverised by Shintaro Higashi. The mattter of fact is you have the talent and the body type to be a good grappler and Karate prepared your body well for these kinds of movements!🙌🥋
Excellent work Seth. You did one of the hardest things - getting on the mat and competing. Well done.
next video: Seth goes to prison to learn prison boxing and shanking people
Hip work all the snappiness of the throws you archive through hip work.
As a life long grappler (Wrestling, BB in Judo and BJJ) love your humor and approach to checking out new styles outside of your original trainning. I just sub’d you😜.
This was amazing! Great job! I thought your grappling was really impressive! You've clearly got a high ceiling in this area, too!
I'm from Brazil n I'm a judoca since I was a kid, and I can tell u bro, what u did since ur first training, was pretty good. Keep it up!
Opening the tournament recap by complaining about how wet his gi is shows that Seth is truly getting into the mindset of a Judoka! Great video - and tremendous uchimata technique for two lessons in!
I think the black belt in the blue gi really appreciated that bout. You could tell he wasn't used to the slightly unorthodox style you have, and he really had to figure stuff out on the fly...so kudos to you!
Judo would gas me out in 3 seconds, it was exhausting just watching Seth.
This is how my first Judo match went. The fatigue, the fight, being called up as the second or 3rd match, only having a handful of practices under my belt, etc.
Fantastic try, if you want to continue competition Judo the best advice I can give is that when your opponent has you in the air, get your knees to the ground first. It's kind of counter-intuitive but it stops the Ippon and you can continue.
it’s so cool, man. it’s such a great result for the very first tournament. honestly i didn’t believe in you 🌚, in judo it’s so hard to grapple against a people with some exp but you’re amazing.
I love going to tournaments because it's so nerve wrecking until you do your first match/event. Then the nerves are gone and you just start having fun.
Not to mention everyone is always super chill
Yeah, pulling/throwing people around is surprisingly hard work!
I encourage you to keep training Judo! It's a beautiful useful martial art! 👊🏼👍🏼
I’m glad to have a judo black belt as my teacher. Also won the nationals in his own country.
I have never done any martial arts and dont intend on even starting, its not even something Im interested in, but still I watch every one of your videos. If anything, i gotta say, they are tremendously engaging. Kudos dude, thats hard to do nowadays.
AS someone whos been doing judo only for two years, i loved this little series.
Great job Seth! committing to a Judo tournament like that takes guts.
