In one of her interviews Turischeva told about this case. In fact, right after the performance she did not realize that the bars fall. She knew that something had happened, but did not look back. And she was crying because she was afraid that it will not include the judge result. She has amazing persistence. She is really awesome as awesome.
Regal, elegant, graceful. She genuinely reigned over her opponents with her quiet dignity and calm demeanour. And her strength and suppleness were legendary. There have been many greats since, better performers, higher scorers - but there will forever only ever be one Ludmilla.
This is how we trained back in the '70's. I've got permanent, little indentations in the point of each hip bone from doing the "belly bashing" on bars. Hated bars.
That's the way things were back then. The original name is "uneven parallel bars" because it was the men's PB that had been set at different heights. Watch some video from the 1950s and 1960s and you will see they are even closer together than this. Giant swings and the like are a fairly new phenomenon, since the 1980s.
What a focused, disciplined athlete. I remember way back in 1996 watching the NBC coverage of the compulsories and the camera zoomed in to Tourischeva who was judging the floor ex of Lilia =lPodkopayeva and she had the same exact look of focus and discipline on her face that she has here.
It's uneven "parallel bars" - yes, of course they are still parallel, but the term "uneven parallel bars" originates from "parallel bars" that were set at uneven heights. It originates from the men's "parallel bars" not from "bars that are parallel."
@fijago There's actually a similar incident that happened pretty recently in a Dutch gymnastics competition...the coach luckily saved the girl from being crashed under the bars, but she was in the middle of her exercise! Scary stuff...
She should of screamed at and taunted the other girls after that . Kinda like giving someone a facial dunk in basketball, taking down the backboard and feeling good about it.
I love how she just walks away like nothing happened. LOL
I know they were taught to ignore everything and carry on, but to not even look around to see what's happened. The Soviet destroyer
This is the real-life version of "cool guys don't look back at explosions"

I lOOOOve this clip!
Her routine was so fuckin awesome the bars couldn't hold any longer

ПРОСТО СОВЕТСКАЯ ВЛАСТЬ!
@x8swift8x because it was the 70's
She said, "Top that bitches!"

Yes, one and only Ludmila.
Damn! She just walked away like, "So what?" Sheesh. That is poise under pressure if I've ever seen it. She couldn't have cared less.
The structure held just long enough for her to finish. That was great.
Wow. Perfect example of sheer professionalism.
Ludmila Tourischeva

she should get a score of 20 for that
I remember that moment so well. She dealt with you so beautifully, a true professional!
I don't know but she won the gold! and she won AA, floor, beam and vault, too.
its called "total focus"..lol

Why would she look back? It doesn't matter if the bars collapsed as long as the routine is done.
@x8swift8x back in those days the bars were close together. They didn't start moving them so far apart until many years after this event occurred.
Do you know what she got for a score?
Hahaha sorry to laugh, but that was fuuuny

***** If I'm not mistaken, Tourishcheva only did one twist for her dismount. Mukhina did the back tuck, you may be thinking of her.
Amazing!
embarrassing ...? good job Ludmilla:)
probably the only baller moment in gymnastics
Khorkina's vault in Australia
actually she was supposed to do a hect with a full twist.

Brava
Did the judges let her repeat the dissmout or did they just count it as if she did it perfect?
looking at it again..she looked as if she's gonna cry coming down the stairs...!!..maybe it did get to her after all..
badass
даже брусья упали к ее ногам!!!
@stevelau1933 Thats something an american would do......ha.......Russians let the performance instill respect, just look at Fedor.
but what did she score? :O
9.8
Fuck... Not a single one can be found.
She looked much sweeter, and hotter, in '72. Here she wears the typical Soviet dour face we saw too much of.
I was there. my head is in the crowd at the back. she knew the equipment had come unlocked but finished without doing the whole routine
