During her education in Santa Barbara, the Mexican traditions and cultural references that shaped Brenda Equihua's childhood were largely ignored. Now the designer is giving them a loud and colorful voice through her designs, turning traditional taqueria tablecloths into two-piece sets and cobija blankets into luxury coats. Only after turning 25 did I realize the importance of my culture growing up. We were raised mostly Mexican, and the years I spent not celebrating my culture and acting "white" not only hurt my soul but presented exactly that buildup feeling described. It feels like a closet with no more room to hold it all, and now im stuck with this intense need to express my culture, really deep dive into it, and hopefully spread that joy to others. Amazing beautiful work!
