Lots of memories in Comic Chat (later Microsoft Chat)- role-playing as the cat, alien, or the guy with the bag on his head, the over-zealous bots that would boot you out if there were even hints of dirty language, and the addition of sound effects and a character designer in later versions. And yes, it was perfectly acceptable to use Comic Sans at the time.
IE 3 was probably the first version of IE that really started to take on Netscape (being able to view animated GIFs and marquees as well as use frames and MIDI background music was so exciting at the time). IE 4 was when it started to integrate into the operating system and Internet Mail and News were replaced with Outlook Express - I have a couple of beta versions on CD from that time.

Windows 95 OSR 2 was the first version of Windows that included Internet Explorer (3.0) pre-installed. Windows 98 was indeed the first "retail" version that bundled IE.
And IE back then was a pretty capable browser. I tried using Netscape and didn't like the UI and neither how weird some websites looked in it (kinda how they look on Linux nowadays), I just couldn't get used to it until the last versions of Netscape Communicator which looked more like the first versions of Firefox did.

Man this feels like the modern/Metro IE in Windows 8/8.1, where it's all full screen, with a status bar on the bottom.

The port 6667 for the Comic Chat looks like that it's an IRC Client. Perhaps you can connect that to an unencrypted IRC Network.

I'd love to know why the world "chatting" is in quotes as if it is some novel technical slang the average person didn't know. Now to be fair I was not alive in 1996, but still....

I miss the days of installing software from CD’s. I know you probably think I’m crazy. Also miss the days before social media. Again you probably think I’m nuts.
