    I think you were probably maxing out the C-Rate on the 5ah packs which i dont imagine can accept 8amps throught thier entire charge process, larger 20 volt batteries would likely take more advantage of those 8 amps and you would likely notice more of an advantage over the 115 with say a 6 Ah or 8 Ah pack with the larger 20700 cells

  • @americanguns6732

    Yes, I believe the 118 will only max out its potential on 21700 cell batteries. Otherwise your charging rate will be somewhat less than the 8amps advertised. Im pretty sure it says this on the box/somewhere in Deawalt’s literature, in their own lengo, premium batteries vs compact batteries etc which I believe means 18650 vs 21700 cell batteries

    I have multiple chargers. I only use the fast charger when I need my big 60v for my circular saw or rotary hammer. Other wise I slow charge everything. I have three 60v batteries so using the fast charge is rare but good to have if I need it.

    how hot/warm is the charger when charging ? Mine is hot and it smells burning. It is new though.

    The batteries are likely not being charged at the max current the whole time... I would expect that it would be constant-current charging (at max current) only until it the voltage increased to a level that the current would taper off on its own (like charging up a capacitor in a "constant-voltage" manner)... That's why it's not exactly twice the time to charge on the slower, "4-A", charger.

      True. Modern battery chargers “blast” a big load for the first phase of charging cycle. After that, the charger output drops to ensure battery health.

    I charge all mine on the 112, 113, and the radio because I think faster charging might shorten their lives, besides I've got 13 batteries ranging from 2 to 6ah (Every time I see a pack at lowes on clearance I snatch them up) so even doing renovations myself I'm not going to run out of juice.

      Your right somewhat. Lithium doesn't get hot like the old batteries. I use the shit out of my batteries daily and never had one die like the niclad batteries. 10 years of abuse

    DCB118 only uses 8amp when you have a 60v flex battery in it with a 20v battery it is at 4 amps thats why their are more pins in the dcb118

    Speed is not all that important to the average homeowner; his usage level is not that of someone in the trades where downtime is a dirty word. The slow charging rate is less stressful on the battery and doesn't heat up the battery, hence the fan for the "fast charger". Also hard to justify an expensive charger for a drill and battery combo that probably sits on a shelf in the garage for maybe weeks at a time.

      Exactly, when i got the cheapest drill/ driver kit, i got the dcb 107 with it, which is 1.67A
      But when i got my 54V SDS plus, it came with the dcb118
      Partly probably due to 2Ah vs 9Ah batteries, but also the SDS kit was 4 times the price

    Why did you drain your batteries completely , no bars?? Never do that, when the tool starts to slow down, ( about 1 bar) charge it.

    • @boazdolev8595
      @boazdolev8595 4 роки тому

      As a rule of thumb, for first time charging battery it is better off to completely drain it then recharging it fully. After that do not drain it completely only firsty bar and recharge .

    • @georgedavall9449
      @georgedavall9449 3 роки тому +2

      Great point Joe! Boaz is going to regret that, as anyone else, when the charger won’t recognize the battery, because it has dropped below the threshold to accept a charge. Tool companies WILL not repair batteries, or replace them if they are abused. I have been told by Manufacturers, that running a battery way down, or letting it sit until the charge indicators won’t work, constitutes ‘abuse.’
      Just FYI Peace 👍🇺🇸😁

      @@boazdolev8595 Never completely drain any battery. That is simply foolish. No battery likes to be completely drained regardless of battery tech whether that is a liquid acid battery or advanced glass matt in your car or a lithium battery in your phone or any power tools.

    If you have flex volt batteries its huge. I have 10 or 12 batteries and the slower chargers suck. At 1 charge it is usually twice as fast. Don't be cheap buy what you need or you will regret it. If you want to save a few bucks buy ryobie and drill a hole for 3 hours.

    It is a known fact that low amp charging is better for lithium batteries.Its the heat that's the enemy.If the battery gets hot while charging you are definitely reducing its life.Charging at low amps is the better choice.
