Also known as the Hayden Manoeuvre. From what I have heard in other videos, Hayden saw a stuntman doing it, so he decided to learn it, and now it is Anakin's signature move.

I am a sword fighter, the funny thing is that most people consider twirling useless in a sword fight but there is a hidden utility behind it. Twirling a sword allows you to change your stance and your tactics while remaining in motions as well as making it hard for your opponents to predict your next move. The only thing is it presents a risk because if you twirl for too long, then you may leave yourself open.

Repeated spins are used in several Shaolin techniques as well because the flash of the blade distracts the eye. You nailed it talking about unpredictability.

Plus, with a lightsaber the weight will be much less of a problem, allowing for much greater control, while every point of contact is potentially deadly to the opposite, vs any bladed weapon. Much more similar to a flail in utility, with the precision and control of a sword.

I learnt about this in fencing - 'spinning' is actually an aggressive tactic. It's kinda harder to pull out to block, but if you're being *very* aggressive, you're basically winding up to strike/lunge, and it forces your opponent to retreat and try to block. It's slightly-higher-risk/quite-high-reward. It fits *perfectly* for Anakin, who definitely believes the best defence is a good offense.

You know, turning around and facing away from your opponent is usually a terrible move, hence why spinning around seem mostly unnecessary and done because it looks cool...
HOWEVER, Anakin protects his back WHILE spinning around, meaning he's actually incorporating spinning into a useful measure. It's not without reason why the Prequels and shows like Ahsoka or Obi-Wan Kenobi has excellent fight choreography. Hayden and Ewan are actually trained in sword combat.

So, the "Hayden Maneuver" is _almost_ a potentially viable tech. Twirling is typically an awkward thing to do in a swordfight - there are uses to it such as remaining in motion during a stance change but you don't want to spend _that_ much time doing it.
