    Lol, do you know how long the took for the Cologne Cathedral?
    Construction started 1248
    Completed 1880
    But ok, it's a huge thing:
    "The cathedral is the largest Gothic church in Northern Europe and has the second-tallest spires (after Ulm Minster) Its two huge spires give it the largest façade of any church in the world. The choir has the largest height to width ratio, 3.6:1, of any medieval church."
    Far bigger than Notre Dame.

    • @felixbrunschede6823
      @felixbrunschede6823 9 років тому

      +bluerisk Also still not completed. They are still working on getting that dome to completion, but there's always something somewhere falling apart, to the point it might never see completion. 1880 might be where the construction was done, not the building in its entirety.

    • @bluerisk
      @bluerisk 9 років тому

      +Felix Brunschede
      Instandhaltungsarbeiten sind bei jedem Gebäude in regelmäßigen Abständen notwendig. Und je größer das Gebäude, desto größer der Aufwand. Im Fall des Doms ist eine ganze Dom-Werkstatt damit beschäftigt; unter anderem deswegen, weil die Abgasbelastung durch die Industrie und den Verkehr sowie der saure Regen der Bausubstanz schwer zusetzt.
      Das hat mit regulären Bautätigkeiten nichts mehr zu tun, die wurden von uns Preußen schon vor langer Zeit abgeschlossen.

    Asa French, I see it as my duty to elaborate on the origins of the croissant. It was indeed first baked in Vienna, whilst the city was under siege by Ottoman forces... Desperate yet keen to maintain opposition, the besieged Austrians made the first ever croissant, where the half-moon shape was intended to mock the Muslims as the half-moon is an Islamic symbol... (Side fact: the Austrians won the siege if I'm not mistaken with help from other Euro nations, and mostly Poland's cavalry)... Now why did France adopt the croissant? Well for one, we have a tradition for patisserie (I.e. Baking) and we also like the idea of defeating Muslims, pretty much since the battle of Poitiers when french Knights had to kick back the Muslims oppressor back to Spain...

      IKR. You can still see Austria-Hungary and the Ottoman Empire, which means that this map is at least 100 years old. You can also see that this came before the Partition of Africa in 1888. We can also see that the Papal States and North German Confederation are on it, so it comes from before 1870. So the map depicts a political landscape of at least 146 years ago. VERY OLD.

    Lol the map of Europe you are using is kind of old... for starters Germany doesn't even exist yet; it's just the North German Confederation and Southern German states which would place this somewhere around the year 1867. It actually does matter because you were using it while you said Russia takes up 40% of Europe; in this map Russia also consists of parts of Poland, Moldavia and all of Ukraine, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia and Finland; I beleive this may be the biggest Russia has ever been in it's history. I also find it kind of funny that there are no states in central Africa and the entire middle east and balkans are part of the Ottoman Empire. xD

    The amount of butthurt in the comments section because of the fact that Bulgaria is 1334 years old ( if we do not count Old Great Bulgaria which was established on 632 AD) is just unreal and quite funny if it wasn't so pathetic!!
    (For not-so-sharp and anti-Bulgarians, here is the math: 2015 - 681 = 1334 years.)
    Regarding San Marino, come on people learn something for a change...read someting and think :
    "After the Diocletianic Persecution following his Christian sermons, he escaped to the nearby Monte Titano, where he built a small church and thus founded what is now the city and state of San Marino. The official date of the founding of what is now known as the Republic is 3 September 301.
    In 1631, its independence was recognized by the Papacy."
    Even if we take into account the times when the Bulgarian state was under foreign rule, Bulgaria is again older than San Marino!!
    Again let's do the math:
    1185 - 1018 = 167 years under Byzantine rule.
    1878 - 1423 = 455 years under turkish rule (fuck turkey!!! Even after nearly 5 centuries of rapings, killings, kidnappings and essentially a genocide far deadlier and crueler than the Holocaust , we are still here along with the Greeks, ready to take you on at any time..just saying ;) ..back to the math )
    455 + 167 = 622 years under foreign rule.
    1334 - 622 = 712 years as a state!
    San Marino:
    Recognized on 1631 AD.
    2015 - 1631 = 384 AD.
    712 years > 384 years
    So even by that logic Bulgaria is the oldest country in Europe!
    And on other hand, San Marion was never actually independent country and it is not today too really. It has always depended and is depended today entirely from and on Italy for everything.
    The statements about Portugal and Malta are just laughable..really..

    Well just to be fair, I'd like to mention that Europe (with a territory of 3,930,000 square miles) is still bigger than the United States of America (3.8 million square miles)

    1:53 It depends what you call "the dark ages", but most people think and say that it begins in 395 (The fall of Rome) to 1300-1500 and USA is 238 Year old nation, what means that the dark ages were more then 3 times longer then USA has been as a nation.
