That's very impressive, but to be fair: For a musician it's simple: You already know every sound you want to get, because you know the original. When you start a track from scratch, you can't benefit from this and finding the right sounds (that also fit together), you can sit there for hours.
why is that song so good? 99% of my spotify list is 70s-90s. but had to include this one too. hearing the beat on its own at the start, i could hear take on me about to kick in :)
Specifically because it uses a retro-1980s style sound for much of the instrumentation that harkens back to the 80s scifi and action movies, while having a balance between the bluntness of some lyrics that tended to be more crass, and those that were even more simple instrumentally, but deeper lyrically. It is the balance between a widened sound and simple layers that makes it seem much more complex than it is, and draws the audience in with a pattern that keeps creating a forward momentum. It sounds like a 1980s song, despite other influences broadening its scope, which was an awesome time for musical experimentation with new technologies. The 50s were a break from traditional music of the time, the 60s and 70s were a break from the cultural lyrics of the past and experimentation there, ending with the 70s experimenting with previous instruments in interesting ways. The 80s was the music of the future because of all that had been invented that made that sound possible, and its usage with scifi and action movies (and also some fantasy). The 90s started settling back down in experimentation, and the early 2000s was largely about trying to ride the most popular styles out and make a lot of money. The 2010s were about trying to counter that downward spiral of similarity and conformity, and experimentation with influences from past decades and lyrical differences again started bringing forth gems like Blinding Lights. 2020 was a terrible year overall, but it thus far continued a lot of the 2010 influences in instrumentation, yet also brought forth a lot of cultural influences of the current upheavals around us. I can't wait to hear how 2020s music develops, with the growing popularity of blending influences from the 80s and new techniques, new lyricism, etc. A lot of people thought that the 70s and 80s were the best periods in modern music. I'd love to have something akin to that level of experimentation and one-hit wonders shooting their shot and getting big enough to keep trying newer things.
This is so freakin awesome! I wish he played the whole song though. The layering is so amazingly on point. This happens to be my favorite song of the past year and rightfully so
