  • You will be hard pressed to find evidence that supports the idea of mandating inpatient treatment is a way of preventing suicide.

As someone who has suffered from suicidal ideation for many years, and who has been involuntarily comitted, I think suicide can be prevented by not removing lethal means. This is obvioualy anecdotal, but knowing that if things get really bad that you have a way out, gives you the strength to carry on for longer. The abuse that I endured in the psych ward did so much more damage than anything else in my life up to that point resulted in my only serious suicide attempt the same day I was released.

    Some hospital leave people
    With more trauma
    Then when they were admitted

I don’t think so long term. For me when I was hospitalized for my severe anorexia and depression all it did was create more trauma for me and I relapsed as soon as I was discharged

If a suicidal patient is admitted, couldn't they just lie and say they no longer feel suicidal to leave the hospital to attempt suicide? Does inpatient treatment really help a suicidal patient or is this just a band-aid for a short amount of time?

What he was saying is we don't have strong evidence to support involuntary commitments, and indeed fear of committal stops many people from reaching out for help. It's a really tough situation, but there is at least a chance for someone to get some help, even if they are only there for a few days or two weeks.
So far as physician discharging, it's ultimately up to the doctor to make a clinical determination on whether or not they will be discharged. Typically patients will not be "better" by time of discharge, but there will be therapists and social workers lined up and as he mentioned a safety plan. You never really know, and that is the hidden burden of psychiatry and have to weigh that bed versus someone else, and if staying longer is actually in their best interest.
      It's a very tough job.
