In the dining room, you only need a light over the table

the ceiling is beautiful. I wouldn't cut any more holes in it.
you can always add lights at a later date if necessary.

Nope! Once you have chosen to place an electrical box there it MUST have a proper electrical device cover plate installed on it.
EVERY single one of the electrical connections or boxes in that ceiling has to have a hole drilled to expose it and an approved cover installed or a fixture installed there. Even if it's just a junction box where a connection was made.
Exception is if you can access it in the attic and install a cover on it there. However, in this case there isn't an attic, so this exception does not apply.

Less is more, especially if you can’t separate the “pendant “ lights in the living space. You can add lamps for lighting there. Happy wife, happy life Nate 😊

I agree with pendants or ceiling fans with lights in living room and a pendant in dining room. The ceiling is to beautiful to have to many lights. Can always add lights near later if you need them. Definitely ask Jim before removing a board. He may have the solution to the wiring.

You do you but if you put all those round ceiling lights in, you are going to have a polka dot ceiling. Way too many of those lights. Use lamps on end tales in the living room. I agree with Katie, too many lights is not comfortable. Y'all have a very Merry Christmas.

CANNOT just "remove a board" & replace it over a junction box for an electrical connection!!
Every single electrical box mounted in that ceiling MUST have a hole drilled an a proper cover installed on it. (assuming it's connected to a live circuit)
It's a serioius code violation to just cover them up with drywall.... or even WORSE, a pine board 😱

If needed table lambs or one of those standing lights would be adequate for the living area. A pendant light over the table in the dining room would also be enough IMO. Instead of all six lights in each side just put in four on the side you need to access the wiring and maybe two in the other side. Less work.

good morning everyone, to many lights:) its best to do less then if you need more light get floor lamps or table lamps. dining room only needs a chandelier, just try the chandelier first if more is needed then add cause you can't takeaway holes in the beautiful ceiling.

I agree, I would have a reversible fan that pushes the heat down in the winter time, and reverse it in the summertime to move the cool air around. My ceiling fan is on a remote so no additional wiring required.

  • @alexcarrn28

I'd add the extra lights in the dining room because dining room tables can be used for so many extra projects. Like playing cards, sewing projects, editing a video, or several videos. Wrapping Christmas gifts, sorting things from the garden, or the fruit 🌳 trees.
A dining table can and does give you an area to do lots of things you wouldn't necessarily know about now.
In the living room there is a possibility you might want particular specialized lighting.
I crochet while watching TV and I need lighting for seeing my work. Again, if you want to do reading that would/could require specialized lighting.
Thank you for including us in your discussion regarding your thoughts toward lighting.
Whatever lighting you desire I think it is important enough to decide now rather than having to do it later when furniture and appliances are in place.
I love the ceiling and look forward to seeing how you will be addressing the center beams coverage.
God bless you and please have a very Merry Christmas. ❤

Symmetry is important. You don't want the lights to be too many, too bright, and so distracting at the top that it takes away from the beauty of the wood ceiling. Ceiling lights also cannot be 100% of your lower room task lighting because people bend over their head to eat their food, to read, to prepare food, etc. So lamps and under counter lighting are also needed. It would definitely be too glaring to only have overhead lighting in a room this large.

    • @shawnakobelka4483
      @shawnakobelka4483 23 години тому

Yes!!! It has to be symmetrical otherwise you’re limiting how spaces in the room can be used. Since it’s a great room less is more. Ambient lighting is what lamps are for. Too much overhead lighting is tacky.

And Nate’s experience with “I can do this” turning into “I’m having trouble doing this”, it might be best to “Leave well enough alone.”

I have always been a fan of ceiling fans with lights when you have a vaulted ceilings. They are so useful in summer as well as winter to push and pull airflow. Personally I think you will hate having pendant lights in the living room area, especially if you mount a tv on the wall. Or if you opt for a wood stove/fireplace on an exterior wall. It inhibits your choices on furniture placement too. Just some input :) You guys are really rocking this reno!!

Too many flush mounts In your beautiful wood ceiling, I would just have the pendants in the living room area. With the table lamps. Down the road if needed you could install some picture style lights on the front of the bookcase unit, some of those wouldn't need to be hard wired for. I like your idea of tying those pendants to that one switch by your hall way. I also think that you probably wouldn't need those extra lights in the area of the bar stools. If you are concerned about the amount of lighting you could have flush mounts on each ends of your hall, that light will be enough especially since you'll have the flush mount in front of the pantry. By the way you could get a can of brown spray paint and paint those white cans so they will blend in too the ceiling.
he picture style lamps on the front of the bookcase if needed down the road.

I'm with Katie... You are thinking I just need to get these lights in...as many as possible now... 8:31 but ultimately you could end up with a Swiss cheese ceiling filled with holes and bright LED lights that will hardly get used as Living rooms are usually for relaxing and not air traffic controller work... Lol entries need lighting. Kitchens need lighting, bathrooms need lighting. basements need lighting... Everything else is more relaxed.😊

  • @vickiblizzard1001
    @vickiblizzard1001 2 дні тому

Honestly, I'd finish up all the remodeling and have the remaining ceiling lights be the very last thing. That way you can get moved in, get your furniture situated, and then decide how much light and what type you'd like to put in each area. In the living room, I prefer table or floor lamps that can be soft light - enough for reading or even softer for watching TV. I think having all those ceiling lights is going to be the equivalent of living on the sun, and I can't imagine a situation where you'd need so much light in your living/relaxing space. In our dining room, we have a pendant fixture centered over the table, then a canister light in each corner. We seldom use the canisters, but they have come in handy when we're using the table for a project instead of for dinner. If you're concerned about how you'll feel about the dining room lights not lining up with the kitchen lights, tape them to the ceiling and live with them for a few days and see how you feel about them then. The beam is a visual room divider between the kitchen and the dining room, so it might not be a big deal.

  • @kimberbomze3842

Dining room: in addition to center pendant, just do 4 can lights (1 at each corner) and not 6. Living room: since the can light is needed for connectivity, do 2 cans on the outer edges of each side (along the walls) in addition to pendants. I wouldn’t do lights in the ceiling near your beam.

  • @marhlfld1

Sorry Nate, I have to agree with Katie. Kitchen needs the most lights. Thank goodness you made them dimmable. Pendant over the dining room table. In the living room/den, maybe one light above, the rest would be lamps on end tables, etc... Ambiance is important for living room/dens. The ceiling is beautiful by the way. Too much light could take away from it's beauty. After the lights are in and you get use to them, it won't be a huge focus as it is now.

Please DO NOT use white trim rings for the recessed ceiling cans, as they will stick out like a beacon. Look for bronze color trim to blend in with the wood.
There are too many 6” recessed can light fixtures - especially with what has been installed in your kitchen. It appears you will not be using wall cabinets. You might be more pleased with using 4” recessed cans. As for the dining room, select the area where you KNOW the table will be placed. Center an appropriate chandelier/pendant fixture over the table, with four 4” recessed cans placed above the four corners of the table. The chandelier and can lights (all on dimmers) should be on their own switches. The chandelier placement over the table is typically 36” above the table top; however, you’ll also have to be aware of the ceiling height when calculating the length of the chain/cord.
You will appreciate the use of 4” recessed cans (on dimmers switches) in the living room to help satisfy the need for various levels of illumination needs.

I don’t think you need that much lighting because you can always add some beautiful lamps you know all around and then I’m not sure if you’re gonna be putting like a ceiling fan for those hot summers with the light in it or something, but can probably even use more sunlight if you can I’m not sure how many windows you have over there. I may not not not, I’m sure will come up with a solution or a solution ya can agree on

What about only putting in the 1 extra light in the living room to make it work easily. That is a light over a door so that would look ok in my opinion.

Pendants in kitchen and one in dining. Six is wayyyyyy too many. LR can be lamps. No more holes in that beautiful ceiling.

I don’t really like the puck lights. Sorry, and my perfectionist brain is really bugged out on the layout of them in the kitchen. 😂 I think in your living room you should have a more ambient light. I have no lights in my cathedral ceiling but I have 3 skylights. They provide all the light I need in the day and in the evening when I’m watching tv the ambient light from the dining area is enough. If your lighting is dimmable than that’s going to be great.
Will you be having upper cabinets in the kitchen or just shelving? I’m so excited for you guys! Your getting so close to moving in. 😁

Hello 👋 Nate and Katie, if I had the advantage of Jim as a friend, I would definitely talk with him about removing tongue and groove from a center position. That in my opinion is not going to turn out well. I agree with Katie, put the lights in as wired and use the dimmer you installed already. 👍💪🙌🙏🌈✌️🐽🐷🐖

As I got older, I do like more lighting, but I’m doing sunlight. My living room has five windows. It’s a 1925 homes so I could open a curtain and get daylight. I don’t have any lights on now but I also have a chimney I have put under mount lighting under the chimney Mantle so if I want mine, I’ll do that and I have a stained glass lamp to the side of me and the ceiling fan has night as well, but I don’t like Light. I’m picky about putting lights on. I’m very confused conservative frugal person now as I got older…lol
In my bathroom, I actually switched the curtains out to half café rod style so I can get more sunlight now I have a large bathroom and I have three switches in there because I get power from the shower night, the vanity light and the main ceiling light in there so I have three outlets in my bathroom very large bathroom, but I prefer the sunlight coming in And I have the lights put on also opting for some of those new Amazon lightbulbs that are motion, censored lightbulbs, my father-in-law who is 80 always leaves the lights on so I just got him the motion lightbulb in his bathroom so when he walks in, it turns on and he don’t have to touch it. I actually put a lock over the switch plate, so he don’t have to mess with it., and they’re very bright. I actually like the bright light when I use lightbulbs I don’t do the warm light. I like the bright light because of I guess I need I need it for my vision, but either way I do a lot of sunlight.
