    The Chesapeake water ways and the Port of Baltimore are some of the best run waters in the world. The bay is well marked and well maintained and the crews there are of the best in the country. That they opened a channel in under a week comes as no surprise to this Baltimorean and sailor on the Chesapeake. They're simply the best.

    • @GilmerJohn
      @GilmerJohn 2 місяці тому +1

      They opened a channel that might serve the needs of "local" traffic but not the needs of reasonable sized ocean going ships. It's better than nothing.
      The Port of Baltimore watched as the ships got larger and large and the main accommodation was to dredge the channel deeper. They DIDN'T install more protection to the bridge; the DIDN'T limit he speed of large ships operations within the harbor; and they DIDN'T require that large, slowdowned ship be handled with tugs until they were outside of the harbor. Frankly, it seems that they were been Penny Wise and Pound Short.
      Baltimore is losing business to the Virginia ports near the mouth of the bay.

    Hi CBS News, I am a retired marine operations specialist from EXXON, that operation up in the port of Baltimore is far more complicated than what you have been thinking it is, in my opinion should be considered and treated as a national emergency, please understand I am not saying this was a terrorist attack, but it is comparable to the attack on the twin towers back in 2001, the spot of the collision between the M/V Dali and the Francis Scott Key bridge is actually ground zero, but on the waters. If you may pass my message to the governor of Maryland, you need to have in place more cranes, a team of marine surveyors , lots of divers, a number of dredges, and a lot of help from small boats for the clean up of the channel and the removal of the tons of debris from under and on the waters. We used a fleet of 300 small boats for the clean up operations after the Exxon Valdez oil spill up in Prince William Sound and in the anchorage bay area in 1989, bst rgs

      @@james-rd4dq there can be thousands of reasons why a engine fails. This engine room is big as a three-story house. Thousands of switches, miles of cables & wires, control by many sensors and computers.
      Most of the time this is not just one error but a chain of errors that lead to a complete blackout. These are often technical and human errors. These don't necessarily have to be human errors on the part of the crew. External craftsmen or the shipbuilders who built the ship may also have made mistakes during the construction or maintenance of the ship.
      A contaminated diesel can only be one of many reasons for failure. Just like a maybe wrong fuel filter that is too fine or too coarse and was installed by an external mechanic or during construction.
      When they start the engine again and go to full throttle it's normal that you have black smoke at the start.

    How hard is it to dredging a new channel and remove the unaffected section of the bridge? Like how we build hydro power. Redirect the water to potentially newly dredge section of the river?

    • @muratti72muc
      @muratti72muc 2 місяці тому +1

      they don't dredging a new channel. They just open a smaller waterway next to the regular big waterway was is blocked by the ship and bridge wreck. But it's only for smaller vessels because the pillars are not so high and closer together. Also its not so deep at this new detour channels.

      The design and spacing of the foundations for the approaches doesn't make this practical. You can't dredge a 50 ft deep channel right against foundations designed for an existing depth of about 25 ft.

      @jimfisher7324 it will take some work. It won’t take months and months. Right now it is so dangerous we cannot try to local the missing. It might be ten times harder to remove the old bridge collapse under the water.

    That aside, what are people saying about their plans to rebuild the Key Bridge? Will they make it longer so large dolphins can be added and accomodate larger ships? Will they widen the deck to add more lanes for increased automobile traffic in the future? How do they envision the future Key Bridge?
