I retired to what they call downstate Illinois and by far the best move I could of ever made. I looked at other Midwestern states and Illinois won hands down for affordability. Illinois is on of 12 states that don't tax retirement income, it's one of 27 states that don't have personal property tax on your car. Virginia is the worst with a property tax on your 25,000 car being over a 1,000.00 the first year it does go down as your car ages, If your still working Illinois don't have a local income tax besides state income tax. I know from my home state of Ohio I paid City income tax to the city I lived in and the city I worked in. Car and home insurance cost are much lower in Illinois so even though the license pate tag is higher I save enough to pay for my tag and still put a couple hundred in my pocket. Everybody wants to move out of Illinois so much I was able to buy a house here that a comparable house in another Midwest state would of cost minimum 100,000 more. Also it's much cheaper to live far from Chicago in downstate. I had a friend move to Missouri now he complains that he has to pay property tax on his car to his county and his retirement withdraws are taxed. You have to look at what you spend money on and where that money comes from and decided from there. For me it's Illinois.

Retire to Illinois? Why? I’ve lived here for 62 years. Other than family there is no good reason to retire here.

I've lived in Illinois my entire life, and while I do like it here, I'm moving to Florida when I retire.

Nice video! Hello. I will be moving to Springfield soon for business reasons. What 2-3 areas do you recommend for living? I will be needing a 1 or 2 bedroom rental apartment, nothing fancy, and will be moving by myself. I guess I have a budget of $800-900 per month. Thank you in advance.

    Illinois- the “s” is SILENT!

Nine of the ten cities mentioned in this video often show up on WORST-places-to-live lists. High crime rates, high unemployment, high poverty rates, gang crime, widespread meth use, crumbling infrastructure. Naperville, OTOH, is rated one of the best places to live in the entire country. No idea where the creator got his info or his 12000 subscribers.

Illinois is a terrible state to retire to. Taxes are sky high. And you saying “It’s also affordable, especially if you live in cities like Chicago...” is that a joke? Chicago is *extremely* expensive, housing is very costly too. Gas is high. There’s basically no reason to retire to Illinois. Also, I’m surprised you didn’t learn how to pronounce the state properly in your research. Springfield’s crime is high and it is also not a good place to retire to. You’d have to have lived in or seen these places in person to have enough of an understanding of them to be able to confidently recommend them. The many inaccuracies in this video pretty much throws all the opinions in your other ones out the window for me.

This guy is out right lying-I know this because I live here. No one can afford to retire in Illinois we're looking for a way out. Unless you are living on "the system" and I truly mean no disrespect to the people who are .. if you live in Illinois sooner or later you will be on the system. There's simply no way to exist as a retired person unless you are getting help from your family or the government.
