Sensei Dorfman, I remember you from the 1970's and later, practicing with Sensei Eddie Dorey, Stan Schmidt and people like Al Macintosch, Mike Macintosch, Dries Lagrange and his two sons Andries and Johan Lagrange. Later Japanese master like Tanaka Sensei and Finakoshi and Co visited and gave their great training at the Melrose Club in Johburg. I had great kumite battles for titles against Pavlo Protopapa and his brother Panico and also some real great fighters from your club and Sensei Eddie Dorey, Dave Friend and people like Keith and Derrick Geyer. Thanks, I miss those days.

Discussion about which style is best or who could beat who really is futile. Once a certain level is achieved in any martial sport, boxing, Karate or even judo, it boils down to the practitioner and his heart, instinct and ability. At the top level all are deadly fighters, great athletes and equal in the street

Dorfman Sensei is a warrior that has practiced the fighting arts all of his life. His son is also a karateka of the highest order. This is a seminar discussing and examining principles -‘it is not the entirety of training. Most who pass judgement do not understand what they see. 👊👊

I train daily with one simply aim....... generate power and hit through the ‘enemy’!
I’ve also used it for real on the pavement arena. You cannot be a British cop as I was in rough areas where I worked without being able to deal with violence . I never punched anyone , but I did unfortunately have to strike some very bad people. You hit through and they stay hit. The fight leaves them instantly and the threat is stopped. I didn’t like it but I learned about hitting someone for real in very dangerous and scary circumstances. Sensei Dorfmann is talking utter sense.

For anyone who doubts, go to a seminar and see for yourself. Sensei Dorfman was trained by Stan Schmidt, one of the Hornet's Nest members, I wouldn't dismiss so quickly - the guy can hurt you! Respect! Oss! Nishiyama, Kanazawa, Enoeda... Nakayama... Schmidt. Who have YOU Trained with? :-)

it's a good question as I am 66 years old and in bad health perhaps I could answer you .
upper body steangth is not required in shoto kan karate, rather it is hip rotation, physics and internal power .the karate practitioner must maintain a relaxed upper body and a strong stance with strong rapid hip rotation .The problem is when you are young you can get away with pure physical steangth but when you get past 50 if you are not using your hip rotation physics and internal chi you are lost . so the answer to your question is what happens when your youthful steangth fades ? Then you first lean karate for real oos

As for myself being fortunate to have studied Karate and internal Chinese styles for more years than I can remember and now being 75 years old, the benifits and rewards, are tenfold .I have taught the arts for years and still teach Iaido and have now come to see all the martial arts in the same light .Domo arigato Gozaimashita !

If you look at all these black belts they all appear to have been training for many years in Bs karate. If they were to ever get in a real life or death fight they would get killed. It realy surprise me that after all these years of people demonstrating and preaching pragmatism in martial arts people still believe this robotic way of training is real combat

however, why are the styles taught are designed as if the opponents faced also use karate, even though in fact if they are aimed at defending themselves they should be striving to deal with various types of irregular attacks.

@@ponnarajashekhar760 the truth is the fundamentals are fine, but the practitioner is never thought to move on from them. from beginner to eight ninth tenth dan, they are still teaching and practicing fundamentals. we are not robots. And it is an art system after all, why teach such a small amount of basic movements when there is a vast system not thought and not even understood by most senior shotokan sensei. all i see here is brute force, serious rigidity and no coordination no flowing movements and all the time the body is a sitting target, rather than a moving target. you can dream on if you think a good boxer could not handle this. but not everyone who practices this system is locked into the fundamentals, there are lots out there who have adapted and moved on to a deeper understanding of their art. i am not here to knock anybodies way of doing things, but this not what karate was meant to be about. techniques were meant to be thought to the student so the student could adapt it as their on, not drill it for years until they adapts to it.
