As someone who owns both, here's my two cents. The only notable upgrade the XM5s have for me are the comfort, the earcups are softer and more breathable compared to the XM4s. I personally don't hear any significant difference in sound quality and noise cancellation, both are excellent in both aspects. I do think the XM4s fare better in two aspects: their ability to fold up makes them more portable and also the fact that the headband adjustment is stepped, I am not a big fan of the smooth adjustment of the XM5s. Looks are subjective so the design aspect is purely up to the buyer, personally I prefer the looks of the XM4s but have been using the M5s more recently since they are more comfortable for my commutes. The XM4s are still very good headphones and I am thinking of bringing them back into rotation soon. I'd say they are still a solid investment for buyers looking to save some money and you should only go for the XM5s if you want the most comfortable headphones on the market and bonus clout points for owning the latest Sony headphones. If these don't matter to you as much, then I daresay the XM4s are actually a much better value than the M5s. Hope this helps

@gt3grievous Hey man, at least for me personally there is still plenty of bass on the XM5s so I don't think this is something you'll have to worry about. Especially considering if you find that the headphones are lacking bass you can easily fix that by adjusting the EQ with the app. But they definitely still have the signature Sony bass boosted sound out of the box for sure
After watching your video, I went and bought a XM4 at bestbuy for $228. Was leaning toward XM5 but at that price XM4 can't be beat. Besides I tried both at the store and didn't notice any difference.

I would 100% pick these over the Airpod max way more comfortable they fold and they come with a actual case that is perfect for traveling and it comes with the adapter for the plane these are so comfortable around my ear I could sleep with them on if you can’t decide what ones to get over the AirPods get the sonys !!!
Seriously I really, REALLY wanted to enjoy the XM5. Had them during a month and realized that the earcups are not that deep compared to Bose700. I feel a relief when I change from XM5 to my old Bose 700, due to more space in the earcups. I don't have big ears neither, so, keep in mind that earcups are smaller than XM4 or Bose. I'm selling them now and probably will buy XM4 instead.
My suggestion to everyone deliberating between these two is just to go to your nearest Heapdhone store and compare both side by side. I was looking people's comparison and kept hearing XM4 sounds better this that that I almost bought an XM4. Then I compared them both directly and was I so disappointed with XM4, what a muddy mess compared to XM5 sound wise (imho). XM5 is a bit of a price jump, but it sounds much much better in my opinion. Nothing beats your own ears, hear them yourself, get the one you prefer.
the folding up feature I use more than I realized. Had XM3, then upgraded to XM4 and sold the XM3. the only thing I still don't like with Sony is their issue pinpointing which of the 2 devices to use when paired with my samsung s22 phone and macbook pro. Macbook pro closing the lid doesn't trigger the bluetooth disconnection. I have to often go into the app to manually disconnect. Or sometimes if both devices are on and I'm switching audio from one to the other. Whenever I get a phone call though without fail it will switch to the phone regardless (if it's paired that is). I find that super annoying and wish Sony could do a better job with this basic feature being multiple generations in. XM3 had the same problem. Come on Sony. Couldn't figure out how to send them this feedback because their website was so convoluted.

Having owned the Bose QC35 II's for almost 4 years, I was a bit tired of them and wanted to get a new pair of anc headphones. Since I was happy with the Bose, at first I got the QC45, but had lots of issues like weird noises when changing songs, issues with multipoint connectivity and the build quality wasn't as good as the previous QC 35 so I ended up returning them. Then thought about getting the Sony XM5, but after seeing them in person I think they actually look cheap and don't seem to be worth the 400€ in my opinion, they actually look and feel a lot less premium than the XM4's, which I was able to purchase for 249€. A great buy especially at this price! This new offer from Sony is certainly a pass for me.
I've had the Bose QC 35 II for 5 years and they have always been been my go to headphones for traveling. But the XM4 offers a lot more and the sound quality is miles better thanks to Sony upscale processor.
you actually forget one of the biggest advantages of the 4 over the 5. performance in wind! lots of people like myself use headsets outdoors, running cycling. with 5 they actually removed the wind control option and its basically unusable. 4 mops the floor with 5 in outdoor perfomance
Oh I imagine the 4 sound better. Considering they got a 40 mm driver and the 5 only got a 30. People can do what they want to a small speaker to improve it, but it always gets out performed by the bigger speaker, especially of the same speaker.

From all the reviews that I've seen so far, the xm5 has a bit better ANC compared to xm4...but to be honest, I don't think you'd feel that much of a difference!! Xm4 has one of the best noise cancellation of any headphones in the market right now. I don't have neither one of these yet, but I'll be buying xm4 soon...xm5 is really expensive considering its noise cancellation is just a little bit better than xm4!! These headphones may sound good but they’re finished in that horrible rubber coating that marks incredibly easily and like all products coated in this nasty stuff, it’s sure to go sticky and peel off over time. Put your finger nail anywhere near it and watch it dig through and scratch. I don’t know why manufacturers still insist on using this material. It’s a deal killer for me.
I will COMPLETELY DISAGREE….I’ve owned both at different times and that is the one thing I like better about the 5’s than the 4’s is the design. They look much more sleek and modern in my opinion plus even though everybody complains about the fact that they do not fold up the one aspect people are not taking into account is the fact that that is less opportunity for them to break. My understanding is that the XM3’s and XM4’s both had issues with the hinges failing over time which is probably why they stopped using that design and went with the non foldable ones and as a consumer I personally appreciate that.
I tried both just now at the sony shop and went with the xm4. Better sound, deeper base, better ear cup fit, it folds, and is cheaper. I found the xm5 disappointing to be honest
you don't want the cups to "fit" you want them roomy. especially on hot summer days or for long (8h+) sessions. i tested both in the shop today too and while xm4 seem to have higher max volume, and are better looking imho, the new design gives more room, feels lighter and the noise cancelling is just beyond good - which is my favorite feature. I just need to convince myself that it is worth it for 100 eur more, but I think I already have made up my mind

What I love about Sony Headphones, is its Sony Connect App. Everything can be tuned to your liking, plus the good thing is that its firmware can be updated there. Some would argue that Sony Headphones are a bit pricey, but they have not consider the App development as well it takes time and costs money too. Not many would mention the importance of Sony Headphones Connect app, I rarely see them appreciate this. It's not just for XM5, XM4 it's pretty for almost Headphones Sony has support too... You are not just paying for the Headphones itself, you also paid for the App, the sound, the name or the brand "Sony" the feel, the quality and everyhing that comes along with it. I have Sony's FM radio, XB60, XB13, Xb910N etc... the FM radio do last a lifetime since 1991 if taken cared of.
I got the xm4 brand new at a low price of $220 (converted from MYR) last Feb.. Although I love the anc, being able to fold and adjusting the EQ will give you good sound quality. My only issues are the ear cups seems a bit small and the clamping were sometimes it presses at the back of my ear that would hurt. I got the XM5 brandnew for $325 on sale ( converted to MRY) for almost a month now and it's more comfortable to my head. With travel restrictions are lifted my wife and I are able to fly with good anc headphones. I gave her the XM4s

$220 is so expensive for Malaysia so I got the 720N. Super amazing. Maybe I can get the XM4 5 years later but this 720N is soooo much better than the on ear JBL headphone. Such a big upgrade
I don't want to have to use EQ to make these sound decent. You need the Sony app for that, which I don't use for my 700Ns. I also mostly plan to use these wired and on a lot of different devices, which won't have the EQ.
watching in September 2024, with my 4 years old WH-1000XM4. My pair almost never failed me as well. Thanks for great review. Sony has to release XM4 mark II with all the new additional features or something in addition to the XM6 IMHO.
Many people have become accustomed to that sound. Me on the other hand, I was always missing the details in the Sonys. They are almost the best headphones, except for lack of detail in the higher midrange and overall - what is supposed to be fixed in the XM5's with the lighter carbon driver - a slightly lighter but clearer and more detailed bass. Since I deeply care for the details and different frequencies in my music, more than just raw bass power, I am happy to make that deal and looking forward to the XM5's. Let's see if they really could lift that "blanket before the music" a bit more. People say, the most expensive headphones just give you the music 1:1. There is no coloring, no dampening, nothing in between you and the music. Then there are different steps, and if you compare the Sonys to other non-ANC headphones, they clearly have that "blanket" before their music. Those are the details that are missing, that the driver can't reproduce that faithfully. But they have power, I have to give them that. That's why I decided for the XM3's instead of the Bose QC35II's. The Bose do have better detail in the songs that I've heard, especially with cellos and instruments, but the balance is off. The midrange is lacking, and also bass. Since good bass also is an audiophile criteria, since it closes the low-end of the sound and without a proper lower bass, the whole thing is lacking some foundation, I went with the Sonys. It's a sad choice in-between either not having the bass and midrange but more details, or having proper midrange and bass, but more blanket before the music. That's the thing with current ANC headsets. That's why - secretly - I am waiting for audiophile manufacturers to catch up with their ANC. Like the Sennheiser Momentums, they have the sound, but since I really need that good ANC to enjoy my music in my noisy surroundings (without ANC I have good music, but always distractions that wouldn't let me enjoy the music), I am hoping for a future where both will meet, the sound, and the ANC.
i recently switched from pxc 550 to xm4s and i have to say, while the anc is amazing, i feel like the sound has been a massive downgrade. I also think the build quality is massive downgrade, when turning my head i can hear the plastic making noises

Got the XM5 from best buy and exchanged them the next day for XM4. The XM5 had deeper bass and more thump with kick drums BUT if they're too uncomfortable with long listening sessions, what's the point of better bass. Proper fit is king and xm4 with the wider headband and thicker less springy ear pads, give me up to 5 hours at a time before I notice their fatigue point as far as fitting comfortably. The XM5 also made my ears sweat and my inner ears touched the foam inside the ear cups with my averaged size ears. Don't like the fact they're both so app dependent. If you can't get into the app, you can't change EQ settings or enable multipoint if you're a new user and even know how to enable it to begin with since it's not intuitive. Very pleased with the XM4 but I feel they should be $300 by now, not $350 still.
Yeah I got the xm4s and so far great except I wish the ear cups were a little deeper and more breathable, with the recent heatwaves the ear sweating got too much for a couple of days but for normal weather they're fine.
I bought these last week cuz my wireless earbuds stopped working and I decided to try out headphones (I’ve only ever used earbuds and IEMs) and this is the main issue I noticed as well and they just have the constantly feeling of something on my head compared to earbuds. I just gotta get used to it.
@@Derqem There is an option to swap out the ear cups for deeper more breathable ones i.e. DEKONI AUDIO CHOICE SUEDE REPLACEMENT EAR PADS but they're like $50. I haven't tried them yet though so you can give them a shot to see if they work.
I just returned my xm5s to best buy went back to the xm4 mostly because of how they don't get compact anymore. Going to Europe I need every inch of space and the xm5s are huge. I stopped wearing the and fell out of love with over ear headphones. In Germany I used my buddies and forgot how much I loved sonys noise canceling headphones, I mean I had them from the 2s. Very excited as they just arrived. Great werk. Thabksw
The xm5 design is probably easier to get right given the non foldable design, but I know people who’s had the xm4 for years and are really happy about their purchase. I’d say to keep a close look on how they hold up during the time they’re under warranty to see if any of the issues with the headband starts to appear. Also I doubt this is a problem that everyone that buys them happens to encounter, but they are made out of plastics and that isn’t of course the most durable material there is.
Were the XM5s more comfortable? I have not been able to try a pair but the pad opening looked wider, I have bigger ears so have been considering it over the xm4
They are both really comfortable headphones in my experience, but the XM5 have slightly bigger cups. If you go for the XM5 i think you will have no problems regarding your ears fit, but if you are on a budget i would give a shot to the XM4 as well.
Is $120 good deal on Amazon India or should i wait for the price drop? It's not a refurbished ones. Sony itself is selling under this price range on Amazon. XM 4 has NFC and Foldable design which i like the most. While XM 5 is available at $240 on Amazon India. Actually during the festival season in India like Dusshera, Diwali, we get the huge discount on every products along with credit card offers just like America, Britain get on Christmas, black Friday sales. And the offers are still running until Diwali ends i.e 12 November.

I have looked on Sony’s website and the XM4s are now £230 in the Uk, instead of £350 which they apparently were at launch (only think that because of UA-cam videos).

I hope your XM4s are still working properly because my XM5s started going wrong only a week after I got them! My parents bought them for me as an early birthday present to compensate for the other residents at my current assisted living house always being noisy and watching TV with the volume needlessly loud. However, only a week in and I started hearing skips and glitches! I got the headphones replaced but now the replacement pair are glitching out too! £379 for a pair of headphones I wouldn’t even spend £1.50 on! Why am I even at this current assisted living house? I WAS living in a training flat near my parents’ place in the late 2010s but when Endurance Care took over the house that owned my flat in 2019, they found my flat to be a fire risk as the only way out from upstairs was through the kitchen! As a result, they told me I had to move to a place they had an hour’s drive away, the other residents do NOT have the same learning disability as me (they have emotional issues) and after nearly 4 years, I have NOT made a SINGLE friend there! The loud TV thing wasn’t even an issue when I originally moved in. It was shortly into 2021 when we got a new TV for the living room when a resident, who doesn’t like wearing headphones and feels he “needs” external speakers hooked up to the TV, he brought down another pair of external speakers he happened to have for the TV we had just recently got. Since then, I have had to put up with TV louder than it needs to be, being told “it’s not that loud”, hearing the theme from Friends 5 times a night and occasionally having to put up with a staff member bingeing EastEnders… I can’t take it! I NEED to leave this place! My new care manager is looking but nothing’s turned up yet! We did find a place closer to home but I was only one of four candidates for moving in and I wasn’t picked! I am at BREAKING POINT. Either I get to move out by Christmas or I’m telling my house “mates” that they will have to keep their TVs on MUTE at ALL TIMES from that point on!
I trade them back for a pair of XM4, but yeah I do know that you’re not the only one that has experienced that kind of problems with the XM5. Maybe they need sometime to sort out their software, I’m not completely sure. Anyways I hope you’re gonna solve the issues you described and have a nice Christmas.

I got a like new pair with all accessories from best buy for 149.99 ... honestly, for that price, the XM4 is not beatable.

I had audeze that was way more expensive, but i missed the deep warm bass and there is nothing like the mx4. The sound is soooo awesome.

These headphones may sound good but they’re finished in that horrible rubber coating that marks incredibly easily and like all products coated in this nasty stuff, it’s sure to go sticky and peel off over time. Put your finger nail anywhere near it and watch it dig through and scratch. I don’t know why manufacturers still insist on using this material. It’s a deal killer for me.
Maybe it’s because they want us to change products every other year or so! 😂

I have the XM4. The XM5 is ugly...
I will COMPLETELY DISAGREE….I’ve owned both at different times and that is the one thing I like better about the 5’s than the 4’s is the design. They look much more sleek and modern in my opinion plus even though everybody complains about the fact that they do not fold up the one aspect people are not taking into account is the fact that that is less opportunity for them to break. My understanding is that the XM3’s and XM4’s both had issues with the hinges failing over time which is probably why they stopped using that design and went with the non foldable ones and as a consumer I personally appreciate that.

I tried both just now at the sony shop and went with the xm4. Better sound, deeper base, better ear cup fit, it folds, and is cheaper. I found the xm5 disappointing to be honest

custom eq makes them so much better u have to mess with the settings first
you don't want the cups to "fit" you want them roomy. especially on hot summer days or for long (8h+) sessions. i tested both in the shop today too and while xm4 seem to have higher max volume, and are better looking imho, the new design gives more room, feels lighter and the noise cancelling is just beyond good - which is my favorite feature. I just need to convince myself that it is worth it for 100 eur more, but I think I already have made up my mind
Is it true the ANC self-adjusting constantly gets annoying? I read this as a big flaw of the XM5s that doesn't get discussed much. Reviewer said it's most notable in environments with random noise sources, which makes sense.

What I love about Sony Headphones, is its Sony Connect App. Everything can be tuned to your liking, plus the good thing is that its firmware can be updated there.
Some would argue that Sony Headphones are a bit pricey, but they have not consider the App development as well it takes time and costs money too.
Not many would mention the importance of Sony Headphones Connect app, I rarely see them appreciate this. It's not just for XM5, XM4 it's pretty for almost Headphones Sony has support too...
You are not just paying for the Headphones itself, you also paid for the App, the sound, the name or the brand "Sony" the feel, the quality and everyhing that comes along with it.
I have Sony's FM radio, XB60, XB13, Xb910N etc... the FM radio do last a lifetime since 1991 if taken cared of.
I got the xm4 brand new at a low price of $220 (converted from MYR) last Feb.. Although I love the anc, being able to fold and adjusting the EQ will give you good sound quality. My only issues are the ear cups seems a bit small and the clamping were sometimes it presses at the back of my ear that would hurt.
I got the XM5 brandnew for $325 on sale ( converted to MRY) for almost a month now and it's more comfortable to my head.
With travel restrictions are lifted my wife and I are able to fly with good anc headphones. I gave her the XM4s

$220 is so expensive for Malaysia so I got the 720N. Super amazing. Maybe I can get the XM4 5 years later but this 720N is soooo much better than the on ear JBL headphone. Such a big upgrade
I don't want to have to use EQ to make these sound decent. You need the Sony app for that, which I don't use for my 700Ns. I also mostly plan to use these wired and on a lot of different devices, which won't have the EQ.
watching in September 2024, with my 4 years old WH-1000XM4. My pair almost never failed me as well. Thanks for great review. Sony has to release XM4 mark II with all the new additional features or something in addition to the XM6 IMHO.

Many people have become accustomed to that sound. Me on the other hand, I was always missing the details in the Sonys. They are almost the best headphones, except for lack of detail in the higher midrange and overall - what is supposed to be fixed in the XM5's with the lighter carbon driver - a slightly lighter but clearer and more detailed bass. Since I deeply care for the details and different frequencies in my music, more than just raw bass power, I am happy to make that deal and looking forward to the XM5's. Let's see if they really could lift that "blanket before the music" a bit more.
People say, the most expensive headphones just give you the music 1:1. There is no coloring, no dampening, nothing in between you and the music. Then there are different steps, and if you compare the Sonys to other non-ANC headphones, they clearly have that "blanket" before their music. Those are the details that are missing, that the driver can't reproduce that faithfully. But they have power, I have to give them that. That's why I decided for the XM3's instead of the Bose QC35II's. The Bose do have better detail in the songs that I've heard, especially with cellos and instruments, but the balance is off. The midrange is lacking, and also bass. Since good bass also is an audiophile criteria, since it closes the low-end of the sound and without a proper lower bass, the whole thing is lacking some foundation, I went with the Sonys.
It's a sad choice in-between either not having the bass and midrange but more details, or having proper midrange and bass, but more blanket before the music. That's the thing with current ANC headsets. That's why - secretly - I am waiting for audiophile manufacturers to catch up with their ANC. Like the Sennheiser Momentums, they have the sound, but since I really need that good ANC to enjoy my music in my noisy surroundings (without ANC I have good music, but always distractions that wouldn't let me enjoy the music), I am hoping for a future where both will meet, the sound, and the ANC.

i recently switched from pxc 550 to xm4s and i have to say, while the anc is amazing, i feel like the sound has been a massive downgrade. I also think the build quality is massive downgrade, when turning my head i can hear the plastic making noises

Got the XM5 from best buy and exchanged them the next day for XM4. The XM5 had deeper bass and more thump with kick drums BUT if they're too uncomfortable with long listening sessions, what's the point of better bass. Proper fit is king and xm4 with the wider headband and thicker less springy ear pads, give me up to 5 hours at a time before I notice their fatigue point as far as fitting comfortably. The XM5 also made my ears sweat and my inner ears touched the foam inside the ear cups with my averaged size ears. Don't like the fact they're both so app dependent. If you can't get into the app, you can't change EQ settings or enable multipoint if you're a new user and even know how to enable it to begin with since it's not intuitive. Very pleased with the XM4 but I feel they should be $300 by now, not $350 still.

Yeah I got the xm4s and so far great except I wish the ear cups were a little deeper and more breathable, with the recent heatwaves the ear sweating got too much for a couple of days but for normal weather they're fine.

I bought these last week cuz my wireless earbuds stopped working and I decided to try out headphones (I’ve only ever used earbuds and IEMs) and this is the main issue I noticed as well and they just have the constantly feeling of something on my head compared to earbuds. I just gotta get used to it.
@@Derqem There is an option to swap out the ear cups for deeper more breathable ones i.e. DEKONI AUDIO CHOICE SUEDE REPLACEMENT EAR PADS but they're like $50.
I haven't tried them yet though so you can give them a shot to see if they work.

I just returned my xm5s to best buy went back to the xm4 mostly because of how they don't get compact anymore. Going to Europe I need every inch of space and the xm5s are huge. I stopped wearing the and fell out of love with over ear headphones. In Germany I used my buddies and forgot how much I loved sonys noise canceling headphones, I mean I had them from the 2s. Very excited as they just arrived. Great werk. Thabksw

What are your thoughts on people thinking WH-1000XM5 having superior headband than WH-1000XM4 cracking headband?
The xm5 design is probably easier to get right given the non foldable design, but I know people who’s had the xm4 for years and are really happy about their purchase. I’d say to keep a close look on how they hold up during the time they’re under warranty to see if any of the issues with the headband starts to appear. Also I doubt this is a problem that everyone that buys them happens to encounter, but they are made out of plastics and that isn’t of course the most durable material there is.

They are both really comfortable headphones in my experience, but the XM5 have slightly bigger cups.
If you go for the XM5 i think you will have no problems regarding your ears fit, but if you are on a budget i would give a shot to the XM4 as well.
Is $120 good deal on Amazon India or should i wait for the price drop? It's not a refurbished ones. Sony itself is selling under this price range on Amazon. XM 4 has NFC and Foldable design which i like the most. While XM 5 is available at $240 on Amazon India.
Actually during the festival season in India like Dusshera, Diwali, we get the huge discount on every products along with credit card offers just like America, Britain get on Christmas, black Friday sales. And the offers are still running until Diwali ends i.e 12 November.

I have looked on Sony’s website and the XM4s are now £230 in the Uk, instead of £350 which they apparently were at launch (only think that because of UA-cam videos).
I really wanted to Xm5But they say they're really uncomfortable and you can't wear them for more than an hour. Is that true, because if so, I'm going to buy one in the meantime Xm4

I hope your XM4s are still working properly because my XM5s started going wrong only a week after I got them! My parents bought them for me as an early birthday present to compensate for the other residents at my current assisted living house always being noisy and watching TV with the volume needlessly loud. However, only a week in and I started hearing skips and glitches! I got the headphones replaced but now the replacement pair are glitching out too! £379 for a pair of headphones I wouldn’t even spend £1.50 on! Why am I even at this current assisted living house? I WAS living in a training flat near my parents’ place in the late 2010s but when Endurance Care took over the house that owned my flat in 2019, they found my flat to be a fire risk as the only way out from upstairs was through the kitchen! As a result, they told me I had to move to a place they had an hour’s drive away, the other residents do NOT have the same learning disability as me (they have emotional issues) and after nearly 4 years, I have NOT made a SINGLE friend there! The loud TV thing wasn’t even an issue when I originally moved in. It was shortly into 2021 when we got a new TV for the living room when a resident, who doesn’t like wearing headphones and feels he “needs” external speakers hooked up to the TV, he brought down another pair of external speakers he happened to have for the TV we had just recently got. Since then, I have had to put up with TV louder than it needs to be, being told “it’s not that loud”, hearing the theme from Friends 5 times a night and occasionally having to put up with a staff member bingeing EastEnders… I can’t take it! I NEED to leave this place! My new care manager is looking but nothing’s turned up yet! We did find a place closer to home but I was only one of four candidates for moving in and I wasn’t picked! I am at BREAKING POINT. Either I get to move out by Christmas or I’m telling my house “mates” that they will have to keep their TVs on MUTE at ALL TIMES from that point on!
I trade them back for a pair of XM4, but yeah I do know that you’re not the only one that has experienced that kind of problems with the XM5. Maybe they need sometime to sort out their software, I’m not completely sure. Anyways I hope you’re gonna solve the issues you described and have a nice Christmas.
