A Warhammer 40k Night Lords inspired Technical Death Metal song

Night Lords were one of the most requested legions so here is "I Am Retribution". A technical death metal song inspired mostly by the Night Lords trilogy. The lyrics are from the POV of Talos(one of my favorite Space Marine characters). Aaron Dembski-Bowden creates such rich protagonists and the lyric ideas just flow while reading his books. To get into the horror vibe I also drew some inspiration from some non Warhammer characters like Irenicus(Baldurs Gate 2), Pinhead(Hellraiser) and Batman. Of course there's inspiration from the Night Haunter himself but I also left the option to do a future song about Konrad. I think that's something to remember, when I finish the 18 legions I can still go back and do many more songs from other POV characters and Primarchs. There are also all the successor chapters of each Legion with so the possibilities for future songs are endless. If you haven't subscribed please do and if you want to really help fund future songs then purchasing my music from Apple Music/iTunes and Bandcamp helps a lot and is greatly appreciated!
Musically this was the hardest song I've ever recorded. I pushed my guitar playing to its limits on this one, it was a nightmare to record! Vincent's vocals worked perfect for this one to get across Talos's anger. Robin did an amazing job on drums as always and Rich experimented with a fretless bass for a change. The song's genre would fall into Technical Death Metal track. Inspired by Necrophagist, Obscura, The Haarp Machine etc but also black metal bands like Immortal, Keep of Kalessin to melodic death metal like Mors Principium Est. To top it off there is a Neo-classical guitar solo since I was learning a lot of Bach(s) and Vivaldi at the time. Many influences on this one.

Lyrics:
Verse 1:
The rotting corpse of an empire flayed for all to see
Sing not to me damnation for I conduct the screams
With a crown of lies a malice in disguise
He sought ascension but we denied his prize
Chorus:
Raise the pyres
Feed the flames
Revenants of midnight
Heralds of Judgement Day
Verse 2:
I am retribution, justice at its core
A phantom of reprisal in this uncaring void
They will remember with every burning world
Death haunts the darkness in nightmare given form
Verse 3:
The sins of the father cast down from son to son
The echoes of his failures unravel and come undone
May the ashes rain eternal on his throne
And the suffering of millions choke the life out of his soul
Final Chorus:
Raise the pyres
Feed the flames
Immortal clad in midnight
The lords of night unveiled
Death haunts the darkness
Death knows your name
Death has come to claim you
Retribution in it's wake

F*********g love it man, big nightlords fan
Each new song you keep surprising me
I'm impressed
I was hoping for Dimmu borgen style black metal for the night lord but I can accept this
@@darwinning1234 It originally started as a Dimmu Borgir style song before turning into a techdeath song. I’ll have to write a DB style song for the Night Haunter now instead.
@@LorcanWard That makes sense unending potential for songs. I hope when its the grey knights turn you can somehow incorperate this quote We do not know what our chances of survival are, so we fight as if they were zero. We do not know what we are facing, so we fight as if it was the dark gods themselves. No one will remember us now and we may never be buried beneath Titan, so we will build our own memorial here. The Chapter might lose us and the Imperium might never know we existed, but the Enemy - the Enemy will know. The Enemy will remember. We will hurt it so badly that it will never forget us until the stars burn out and the Emperor vanquishes it at the end of time. When Chaos is dying, its last thought will be of us. That is our memorial - carved into the heart of Chaos. We cannot lose, Grey Knights. We have already won." ~Justicar Alaric”
"It seems Variel has attempted to make music."
"Attempted?" -Xarl and Talos on yet another masterpiece
Haha love it
we have come for you.
Yes Brother, Take The scrotoons
We have come for you
Ave Dominus Nox
Several nods at the Talos 'Failure' speech, huge W
I read that section about 10 times before moving on. 40k writing at its best. It’s no wonder it inspired this song.
Ave Dominus Nox!
My other favorite violent boys of chaos, spectacular showing!
"Death knows your name."
What an utterly chilling lyric. I am impressed constantly by the vocals and instrumentals, as it is very very rare to get such a quality and variety in the same group, but hot damn dude I just love the lyrics dude. I was surprised when I came across Unbreakable, but each song has just built on the quality of the last. Please keep it up fellas.
For the Emperor and Sanguinius! Death, DEATH!
Thanks man! It's cool people dig the variety especially with how much the project bounces around between styles. Lots more to come!
Discovered you a few days ago and breezed through your 40k songs. Amazing.
Watching a band improve at such a quick pace and (relatively) short timeline is fascinating as well.
All in all, great job, new follow.
Thanks man! It's been quite a journey to this point. Lot's more to come.
Its alwasy a great day when you upload. In december i am going to post my spotify wrap i guarantee you will be on a couple of first spots. Really looking forward to the Blood Angels song and hoping its from Sanguinius POV. Apreciate ya and everything you do.
I'm really looking forward to seeing Spotify wrapped this year and how much people have listened to my songs. Blood Angels song is coming along well. It's been a difficult one to record but nearly there.
The harmonies in the solo are insane. This is really cool, keep up the good work!
Thanks!! That harmony track was a nightmare to record because of the awkward positions but I love how it turned out.
Imagine if the last battle of 40k was just an epic song battle between everyone.
The bat people!
You've definitely improved over the last few months, not that your older songs arent great still. im looking forward to a emperor's children song, definitely a couple ways you could decide to take that one.
Thanks! I've got a good few ideas for Emperor's Children songs. There's so many options for their legion with Fulgrim, the Kakophoni, Lucius the Eternal, pre-heresy legion etc. A lot of ideas in the works.
I too like Vivaldi. Huge fan of the Night lords trilogy. Not the biggest technical metal fan but your solos are always really good. Ave Dominus Nox
Thanks! I spent a long time crafting that solo. This song might be a bit heavy or chaotic for anyone more interested in rock/power metal but I felt this style portrayed the Night Lords quite well.
@LorcanWard I'm metalcore at heart. I like heavy a lot. Just technical mathematics style doesn't connect emotionally i feel like it lacks a proper dynamic to it. That's why I love bands in the vein of ABR. Thus me saying I do like the solo. Good work regardless I don't wanna be a downer.
@@BloodBuffalo I get you. There's a lot of tech metal that falls into that trap and can be uninteresting to listen to. I love ABR, Found in Far Away Places and Constellations are my favourite albums by them.
Ave Dominus Nox Lorcan
Unbelievable, you just keep on going. Another song... Just wow.
Thanks! Lots more to come
Man, i don't understand youtube sometimes, i listen to your songs pretty much daily, at the very least as a part of an automatically made playlist, but i got absolutely zero notice of this for two days. No little dot next to your channel, no notification, it didn't appear in the sidebar when your other songs were up, it didn't pop up in the front page feed, no nothing. Only came across this when i went to look at your channel when my lizard brain started to think "where new song? many nights passed!"
This is a problem across all content sites unfortunately. It's really annoying that they don't just show you what you want to hear instead of pushing their more viral content.
So glad that WH40k is such a vast IP. So many factions to choose from = so many fantastic tracks from Lorcan Ward to come 🤘
Writing these songs has really showed me how rich and detailed all the legions, primarchs, chapters and various characters all are. It's quite a credit to GW that they took 18 armies of super soldiers and managed to flesh out each with so much unique lore. There's an endless amount of ideas to draw from.
Viris colratha dath sethicara tesh dasovallian. Solruthis veh za jasz!
UA-cam lacks a Nostraman to English translation.
VIIIth Legion drop pods have been deployed to Google HQ to rectify this error.
Amazing song as always!
PS. The fabricator-general wishes to know where are the cants and prayers you promised, the toaster's machine spirits are getting restless.
The Toaster Machine Spirits will be appeased. Binary Cants are being recited and prayers to the Omnissiah written for a future release.
Beautiful work. 🤘
For the next loyalist song, how about Blood Angels, Lamenters or our golden hawk boy Sanguinius himself?
Thanks! Blood Angels song is in the works. It's been a tough one to record but it's turning out great. It has one of my favourite choruses and some of my best lyrics IMO.
WE ARE HERE IN MIDNIGHT CLAD
This is beautiful and a masterpiece of a song my new favorite. In the future a song about the black rage after whatever you have planned would be amazing.
Thanks! I’ve got a Blood Angels song in the works so you can bet it’s about the Black Rage
Getting some major Rings of Saturn vibes!
I love those guys! Ultu Ulla is a fantastic album. The perfect of blend of technical shred and catchy riffs. I haven’t kept up with them the last few years.
Ave Dominus Nox. You did amazing as always!
Yep, another great one.
Thanks!
Even Ebony Dark'ness Dementia Raven Way subscribed to the channel after this song.
god damn you have come far, friend
Thanks! It's mad looking backing at how much I've done. Never thought I'd get this far,
AVE DIMINUS NOX!!!
My favorite yet even over the Dark Angels!
Always good to hear when a new song becomes someone's new favourite!
... The Night Haunter approves!
...Ave Dominus Nox 😎🤘
I don’t think he does…
But Ave Dominus Nox nonetheless!
that night lord has become a VTOL at this point. "i identify as an attack helicopter"
Another one smashed out of the park!! 🎉🎉🎉
Man I'm just bere waiting to see if we get a Salamanders tune
Anyone else hear this as just Talos Vecouren’s monologue in a music form?
Essentially that's what it is. The part is so powerful and gave me chills reading it. It has such a musical quality to it so I based the whole song around it.
This song was one of the best; now I wonder if the next song will be Xarl asking if a trooper worked on the Gunnery Deck. 😅
Ave dominus nox. I stand in midnight clad
this was sick, do you have any plans for custodes songs? A duo song between the gal vorbak and the custodes squad (namely Synthran) would be pretty sick, themes of betrayed friendship of argel tal and the 'I've always hated you, Xaphen' line is always sick
I've thought about doing a Gal Vorbak song but never thought about a duo against the custodes. That's a good idea.
I wonder whether chaotic rhytm fits the legion which, though traitorous, rejected chaos. On the other hand, it drives a listener towards the feeling of dread and unease, which definitely fits the Sons of the VIIIth.
Exactly! The idea was to do something more extreme, less melodic for the VIIIth, on the surface its chaotic but on closer inspection it's very thought out with layers of harmonies and instruments locked together to represent the legion.
Great job! Night Lords have always been a legion I’ve enjoyed. Do you have a Black Legion song planned? They’re one of my favorites! Keep up the good work regardless.
Yes I do. It’s in the early stages but the lyrics are done. It ticks a few other boxes as well as the Black Legion.
nicelly fitting to the VIIIth
\m/
🤘🏻
Another banging chaos song! Is there any metal genre you don’t do?
So far I’ve done 80’s heavy metal, thrash metal, metalcore, power metal, melodic-death metal, industrial metal and tech-death metal. It’s really cool that I can jump around between all these styles and it still be a consistent project because of the Warhammer lyrics.
So I still need to djent, deathcore, black and doom metal. I dabble in all styles except Doom metal so that would be a good challenge to write in.
@@LorcanWard black metal song about the word bearers next please
TOP
Run❤
I was expecting more Haarp Machine influenced since they don’t exist anymore
There’s little bits throughout the track, the diminished section in the intro, the verse riffs, a little bit of the chorus, the interlude riff. It’s more Al’s rhythm rather than his note choice which is so far over my head.
Disclosure is one of my favourite tech albums. For a debut album it’s insane and the heights Al could have gone if he continued music at that quality : (
@@LorcanWard he is mentally ill 😭 , have you watched his recent videos?
Noice!
I want to ask you something. Do you plan to make a video of Angron
Right now the plan is to finish the 18 legions and then come back to POVs I didn’t do like Perturabo or Sigasmund. I have some ideas for an Angron song, I would want it to be very different to Kharn’s so I’m not retreading the same ideas.
@@LorcanWard Makes sense. And if I had to guess the next song is going to be about the Emperors Children right?
Carcharodons when?
Ave dominus nox
Please make a salamanders song
Working on it
Ave Dominus Nox
Day 11 if asking for custodies song
It's going to take a while I'm afraid. A lot of time goes into crafting these songs.
Just take your time, Im still going to ask, like 10 more times😂
Ave Dominus Nox!
