While My sister was a University student in the north of Ireland she asked my grandfather and me to meet and stay with her on my Godmothers farm outside Tuam. All of my grandparents emigrated to Boston between WW1 and WW2, so I grew up in a family that talked about Ireland as if it were the magical Kingdom of Xanadu. There were times that I was cynical of their Irish affinity, but then I visited Glendalough when we were spending a weekend in Dublin. We walked along the Valley as my sister and I caught up on each of our lives an unmistakable sense of peace and joy came over me, I will never forget that feeling, and now I have a greater affinity for Ireland.
I have been to Perth, W.A. many years ago (U.S. Navy) and was astounded @ the hospitality & freindliness of The Aussies. I am also proud that you keep up your Irish heritage. (as do I) This film was well done & very informative! My Irish isn't fluent..but I'm getting there...it's very difficult. As the Irish say: "Is fearr liom Gaeilge briste na Bearla cliste".."I prefer broken Irish to clear English"! Aris, go raibh maith agat! Again, thank you!
Great depiction of the place, Aussiemarco. I'm from Perth WA and will going to Ireland with my two daughters in June and because of your video Glendalough will be one of the first things we see and I'll make sure we stay longer than 15 minutes! My wife said Wicklow is the real Ireland but I didn't believe her and always thought the west coast was.
Hi Colin. I'm really pleased my video has helped you find Glendalough. I think you're right, as a region the west coast of Ireland is the 'real' Ireland. Counties Kerry, Clare, Sligo and Galway are absolutely stunning. Nothing can beat driving the 'Ring of Kerry' or through Connemara on a bleak, windswept day. The landscape is awe inspiring! But for me, the most beautiful place in Ireland is little Glendalough. Have a great time in magnificent Ireland!
Every time I go to Glendalough and have to leave my heart hurts ~ it feels like that's where I belong. It is definitely a sacred place. I hope it is preserved forever. I'll be there again next June!
@@ezicarus8216 you can park for free in the hotel although the fee helps support the upkeep of the location. The next valley over (Glenmalure) is much more rustic and, imo, trumps Glendalough.
There's a shot from the Wicklow mountains in the movie The nephew near the end with sunrays shining unto one of the lakes way in the diistance,it is the most beautiful sight to get the shot as perfect as that.pity there wasn't a picture of it online tho but i will keep searching.I'm from northern ireland but am determined to go to wicklow @ some stage with a camera.
Hello Mark, Gerry Kelly of Kelly Taxi Dublin. This combined with Powerscourt House and Gardens is my most popular tour. I would like your permission to use this video on my Taxi site. Many thanks for a great Video........
This is a good video but, you keep saying Irish Dark Ages with reference to this time period. I'm sorry to bother you with this but you couldn't be further from the truth. The Irish Dark age was c. 100 c.e. to about 300 c.e. so long before the introduction of Christianity to Ireland. Whilst the early medieval age (c.430 c.e. to about 1160 c.e.) was in fact a thriving Golden age of art and enlightenment in Ireland.
Thanks for your comment. I accept them, however when writing the commentary, I had to 1) keep the video fairly short (around 10 mins) and 2) not bog the viewer down in detail. By referring to the period that Glendalough was at its peak as the 'Dark Ages', viewers with no knowledge of history will know the point of reference the video is discussing. Referring to the time as the Early Medieval Period would mean those without prior knowledge wouldn't know when this actually was. This is travel video, after all, not a history lesson.
Is cuimhim liom Gleann da Locha go maith. Bhi me anseo 1979. A Naomh Choemhgan ata i bparthas a Mhic De gan locht a bheir slainte is do grasta don te is bocht. A Naomh Choemhgan thainig me i do lathairse agus me lag gan luth. Faigh aras dom i bparthas ait i bhfeicfidh me thu !
Could feel the prayers of the centuries echoing off the hills coursing through my body and soul. Truly sacred.

What a lovely story. Thanks for sharing it
A beautiful and sacred place. We stayed there two years ago, in a perfect b&b, right at the end of the valley.
Would you mind sharing the name of that B&B please?
Precious! Thank you so very much. 🙏❤️☘️

Many thanks for a great Video........
I also love this place.
good video and all, but at 2:12 that's glenmacnass not glendalough!
Quite right, but as Glenmacnass Waterfall is only 9 kms from Glendalough, it's still in the same area ;-)
She is so beautiful, no wonder the Brits wanted her so badly :)
Heard that a woman died in the lake at Glendalough like years ago.
Ba mhaith liom a ceoil seo. Ar fheabhas! Go hAlainn! Go raibh maith agat, Aussie! Beannacht De leat agus beannacht De le hanamacha na marbh!
