  • Learn How to Manage Map Layers on Your Garmin Montana 700 Series GPS Devices
If you own a Garmin Montana 700 series GPS device, it's important to know how to manage the different map layers. With recent firmware updates, there have been changes to how you access map layers or have other options to download directly onto the device via wifi. In this tutorial, we'll take a closer look at how you can manage map layers on your device.
Download Birdseye Satellite Imagery - The main menu icon to download Birdseye was removed, and now you have to go to the Map Manager to get to the screen and download as before. To download Birdseye, follow these steps:
Press the "Map" button on your device
    Select "Map Manager"
    Select "Birdseye"
Follow the prompts to download the imagery.
Create Map Sets - If you have multiple mapping products or custom maps on your device, you can create map sets which is simply a quick way to enable or disable map layers. You can't add Birdseye to the map sets, just the main map layers. To create a map set, follow these steps:
Press the "Map" button on your device
    Select "Map Manager"
    Select "Map Set"
Follow the prompts to create your map set.
Public Lands - This map layer is only useful for locations within the US . It adds shading to public lands. To enable the Public Lands map layer, follow these steps:
Press the "Map layer" button on your device
    Scroll down to "Public Lands"
Tap to enable this map layer.
Popularity - This is the heat map you see when on Garmin Connect, where users upload their walk, run, or bike activities. The color shading shows you which roads or trails are more popular. When creating courses, it will use the popularity map layer to determine the turn by turn track. You can also manually create courses or routes using this map layer. To access the Popularity map layer, follow these steps:
Press the "Map Layer" button on your device
    Scroll down to "Popularity"
Tap to enable this map layer.
Outdoor Maps+ - This is a subscription where you can download additional map layers via wifi to your Montana. This is for US areas only, and it seems like you need to be a resident of the US to order it. To access the Outdoor Maps+ subscription, follow these steps:
Press the "Map Manager" icon on your device
    Select "Outdoor Maps+"
Follow the prompts to download additional map layers.
By following these steps, you can easily manage the different map layers on your Garmin Montana 700 series GPS device. Remember to keep your device updated with the latest firmware to take advantage of any new features or changes.

Great extremely helpful videos, glad I found your channel! I’m looking to get a Montana 700, don’t need the 700i as I have an inReach mini I mount to myself when I ride my adventure bike. My question is can the Montana 700 connect to an audio source so I can get turn by turn directions in my helmet on long stretches of pavement if I buy city navigator. I tested the 700i and it could do that but not sure if the basic 700 can. Thank you for the help!!

This is archaic technology! Wow, garmin is a dead company walking. SpaceX is making cell phone connectivity global, and Google already has WAY better maps than Garmin. That said, I thank you for your video.

No idea what you are talking about. Global cellphone technology has been around for decades. Google maps is mediocre at best. If you’re going to state a web based map service at least say Bing.
As for Garmin… absolute go to for global use. Using your mobile phone for doing GPS stuff is sketch. Also the ability to tap in to GLONASS and Galileo is an amazing feature that almost all Garmin units allow and few mobile devices do.

@thexchox1554 I should clarify. SpaceX is making cell phone connectivity global, without the need for cell phone towers. Low earth orbit satellites will provide that cell phone coverage ... everywhere. As far as maps and Garmin, my main complaint is the Garmin graphical user interface (GUI) seems archaic to use compared to others, like Google or Bing. I'm no expert with topographical maps, nor do I hike, where you might need that level of detail. Garmin provides that, and might eventually remain as a niche service provider.
