Stewart Copeland was asked in an interview, ‘how do you get that drum sound?’ He answered “ I hit them fucking hard”. Yep
True BUT one must also not forget the uptuning of the drum skins, specially the snare-SC's snare is as far as I know, the highest tuned snare in the pop/rock segment.
No cell phones. No selfies. No GPS. No Google. No Autotune. YET, MUSICALLY, THE BEST OF TIMES.
oh, there was GPS.
Stewart literally uses reverb pedals and other effects on his kit lol.
💯❤️
How would you feel being as talented as Sting and Andy and yet everyone talking about the drummer. 😊
Kids
tbf the bass and guitar on songs by the police is always quite easy whereas the drums are always quite complex
Yeah, they're all talented, but the standout member is very obvious lol
No discredit to Sting. He was more than talented enough to have a great career by himself as we've seen. So talented. Voice, while playing intricate baselines, and incredible songwriting. But his ego couldn't handle that Copeland was better at his instrument than he was at anything he did. Summers was probably his equal. The most underrated gitarist of all time. It's a disgrace actually. Summers knowledge of music surpasses most if not all.
Such a shame. The Police. These three were pure magic together.
@@Beefache is this your regular fishing hole?🤔🤣😅🤣😅
Just 3 guys! That's all it takes to own a stadium.
Hendrix, Rush etc etc. Unfortunately, it's hard to imagine a power trio, playing 100% live, emerging in today's 100% computer-perfected, dehumanised mimed excrement.
I'm convinced stewart Copeland thinks his drums owe him money.
Haha... good stuff, man!
Oh man, that was hilarious!
Best comment ever. So so so true.
He used to write "F off you C" on them.
😄😄
I think Stewart Copeland moved more in 3 minutes than I have all year.
😂😂😂😂😂
I've been on a Police bender for the last few days and I swear that 75% of all the comments are about how badass Stewart Copeland is, lol.
True story Xdxd
You bet! Same thing I noticed. And correct!
Yeah, every police video is bombarded with comments on my favourite drummer. He’s probably the most unique out there too, in my opinion.
Matt Man, are you are drummer?? Stewart has the chops of a god. His dynamics are exquisite and also, driving.
If it wasn't for Stewart Copeland, there wouldn't BE a Police. Forming one of the greatest rock bands in history is a special kind of badass.
Yeah Copeland is great but not enough love for Andy Summers, those flange/chorus driven arpeggiated riffs are legend and formed part of the identity of 80s pop/rock music.
Absolutely....Andy was amazing. He seems quiet in the mix here which is bizarre..
I totally agree
Meh
And his chord vocabulary is superb. One of the most underrated guitarists of all time imo.
Andy underestimated, he is awesome!
Copeland in his prime was like TNT with drum sticks attached
right on!
he still is!
nothing like an attention-getter right from go. sweet jesus that guy plays hard.
@@Epitaphforyesterday Considering he plays "traditional grip" he is really powerful
I would hate to be his drum set.
Copeland has the energy and passion of two drummers, a percussionist and a marathon runner all in one!
anyone who tries to say that Copeland isn't one of the greatest drummers ever to walk on this planet needs their head looking at
TheGalwayFarmer Copeland is good! But check who taughth his stile. Two reggae drummers: sly dunbar and Carly barrett
...and on the Moon too!;)
TheGalwayFarmer Head looked* at.
Moved up one notch since peart retired
Amen to that....the energy from his drumming was unlike anything I had ever seen before (I was there for the Chicago stop of the Amnesty Tour...it was insane!)
Stewart to the rest of the band "naw, you guys go ahead with the guru outfits, I'm good with what I have on" 35 years later it proved to be a good choice.
😂 Yes!
what about Bono's get up?
It does not get any better than this.
My girlfriend told back in 1984 that the drummer for the Police played off beat and was really good. Smart chick.
there's a real keeper!
Why do we spend billions on particle accelerators when science should just study Stewart Copeland's drumsticks LOL
man you look like peter"fucking" hook from new order
Three POWERFUL musicians.......I will NEVER forget a 1981 New Years Eve party, we were all pretty depressed about Lennon's murder, when someone put Zenyatta Mondata on the turntable and KNEW I had to save up money for that album!!!!
What a great album!
Summers is a beast, he's the glue that holds the melody.
Wish the mix let us hear the guitar. Guess sound person missed soundcheck.
His guitar work on most songs is incredible. That's something people don't appreciate enough. He understood intervals and chord extensions.
The glue is never in the lead melody,, could be the greatest song ever, yet without the Beat and bass...forget it..
@@petercricket Summers melody was unique, it had odd notes just like Sting's voice. Sure you have bedrocks like bass and drums but his guitar wove between them all with punk, ska and rock.
About times someone says it
All 3 guys are great musicians, just brilliant.
No other guitarist sounds like Andy ! Unique player in every aspect !!!
Look at last interwiev on Rick Beato podcast
Bar chords are for 3rd graders, lol@@rhythmtist
No one has a better sounding snare than Copeland...no one
Charlie Watts! Copeland said about Watts' style, "The snare is early but the bass is late...sounds simple, but you try it."
I'm 54, divorced 8 years ago and live by myself. Found myself sparking a nice J a few weeks back, blaring this from my rig, and dancing up a storm. Closed my eyes at times, and STG I was back then... My god what a great night it was, and what a great decade to be young.
I'm the same age, Rock On!
I saw Copeland sitting behind a huge kit in Curved Air in 75 - just a fantastic drummer.
First things first: I absolutely adore Stewart Copeland's drumming. Have done so through all the decades that I've known The Police. But whenever I look at the comments section of basically every single Police video here on UA-cam I get the feeling that the majority of people are almost compulsively heaping praise on the man. And rightly so, that fella deserves the praise, don't get me wrong.. But so many people are very often ignoring Sting's and Summers' contribution to the band. I mean, think of Sting whatever you want but he wrote almost all of the songs they ever recorded (and I absolutely love Stewart's songs, especially on Reggatta), his bass lines are essential to the songs and his voice is, well, the voice of The Police. Without the amazing soundscapes Andy Summers created with his guitar, The Police wouldn't have been The Police. Not as we know and love them.
Between the three of them they made this band, egos clashing and all. True, Copeland formed the band and had the good sense to get that bass playing and singing fella from Newcastle involved in it. So there's that. But once again: it was the three of them that created the inimitable energy and creative force that was The Police. Take one single guy out of the equation and you're left with nothing. At least not with The Police. Appreciate the contribution of each of them. Only together they were The Police. Only together they were one.
Finally someone speaking the truth about the comment section.
Agree 100%
Agreed and to me they always sounded like a more mainstream RUSH and they are a 3 piece too !
Dude, all they 3 are eXcellent musicians, but I think the highest quality in The Police is Copeland. In my opinion, Copleand is in the top 5 drummers ever, together to Bonzo Bonham, Keith Moon, Neil Peart y Ginger Baker
@@guimat Absolutely - in terms of dexterity and technical proficiency. No doubt at all. If it comes to sheer musicality - what they were bringing to the table in terms of ideas, structure, originality - they were definitely equals. They were playing off each other. Many of Sting's songs would never have become what they are without the ideas that the other two guys would provide. But yeah, Copeland could probably drum circles around them. So to speak...
RUSH and THE POLICE both ask the question to young musicians: WHERE’S THE BEAT?! My two favorite groups all time especially Neil Peart and Stewart Copeland!!!
Were you a Rush fan, saw Neil praise the Police, and then became a Police fan? :)
Stewart Copeland is a drummer who plays as if his life and very survival depended on it. Fuck....
+Mike Patton He plays his ass off!
+Mike Patton One of the best, if not the best, percussionists in this genre.
+Mike Patton Also check out any performance of Buddy Rich. Also, a plays-as-if-his-life-depends-on-it type.
+Mike Patton --- Stewart Copeland is by far the most underrated major drummer in rock history, and is a top 10 rock drummer with a sound all his own. He is subtle and brilliant.
david letterman
He changed the game for sure. Even guys like Neil Peart got into the Police and he copped a lot of his stuff.
wow a singer that actually sings, no autotune, no singing to tape. i wish more artists today would try that
?
Todays bands dont have musical talent. Thats why they all need their backing tracks
Much of this performance, like so many, were redone in the studio
@@cygnustspFor clarity of sound not performance in any shape or form. I've seen them live and it believe me, there is nothing to be doctored.

Stewart proves that you don't need to be a soloist to be a monster. that you don't need to turn your sticks into batons to be a legend. He remains one of my greatest influences because of the melodic, powerful, insistent playing that were as much of the sound of the Police as Sting's voice or Andy's guitar. And P.S. I was at this show!! :)
Every song he plays is a solo...............
Of course you were, everyone says that
@@dominiccrimmings6925: If I thought you mattered, I’d show you the ticket stub which I still have.
Was it truly only a half hour concert?
@@catzenhouse maybe a little longer. But give or take.
What a band, what a DRUMMER....Stewart Copeland = god with a drumkit
Amen but this is one of those shows where sting took his mic away and you can feel the tension between them with poor Andy stuck in the middle of it all .Stewart loves to improvise and Sting just wants him to keep time .Shame and awe all wrapped together sprinkled with a little aggression .
Agree... Stewart reminds me a lot of Marco Minneman. Lots of intricate sub-rhythms within the main structure of the tune. Not too many drummers have this, or play in bands that embrace it.
Not God ... just good!
Well, he’s certainly outstandingly creative. Very special and unique technique. From rock, funk grooves, to reggae . His problem is that he struggles with timing. Speeds up unexpectedly, and music pays the price. That sucks. It all ruins his other qualities. Also, he drops the beats inexplicably. Maybe he just should be less busy and focus more…. Gets carried away easily. He’s a great composer, btw. .
copeland is unreal he is an entire orchestra in a drum
One of the greatest bands ever, the definition of musical chemistry, a perfect union.
They also argued and bickered with each other constantly. Thier in-fighing is the stuff of legend.
3 person band with chemistry like RUSH
@@timcavender5709 Yes! I love RUSH. Maybe the two best trios ever: The Police and RUSH.
Absolutely. Three brilliant musicians three different personalities and egos yet The Police are still more than just the sum of their parts. They have a special alchemy readily apparent in their live performances
@@007ndc Well said. 🍻
As a drummer, Stewart Copeland style of playing is the hardest to follow. He is just amazing!
He is but I think that's because he's at heart an improvising player. He's got his chops and a great sense of rhythm who hits a ton but wants to find creative ways to throw stuff into the music. It's why I've never understood why some players want to transpose his tracks because it's more a state of mind than composition. Imo of course
So nice to watch/hear Andy rip into solos !!!
A sublime player…one of my favorites!
God bless Stewart Copeland
Stewart Copeland takes drumming to another level where he is in a class all by himself - Gods gift to drumming is Stewart Copeland - period.
The technical excellence that these guys show is incredible. PLUS Sting's songwriting, stage presence, and vocals.....what a studly group.
How good is Stewart Copeland on the drums - those hat patterns... just incredible.
This band was a breath of fresh air when they came out, a new shot of energy. As a guitarist I was captivated by Andy's ethereal guitar sounds. I think he bought that Telecaster from one of his students for $350 when he was giving lessons in California. He was very poor at the time and could barely afford it.
$200, he tried to repeatedly talk the kid out of it also.
5:28, that special moment when you realize the whole stadium knows the words to your song. Sting could feel it there, he just let the crowd sing it, such an amazing moment.
He depicts this experience in his 2016 song, "50,000".
Rusty Kuntz This is my favorite Police song
This trio is one life's beautiful gifts.
Copeland does NOT get the full recognition that he has earned. Incredibly underrated artist. Blessings! 🙏🏾
Stewart Copeland. On the ragged edge of control. Amazing and terrifying at the same time!
Lol you just described Moon.
The frenetic genius known as Stewart Copeland!
holy crap that drumming. Copeland truly one of the all time greats.
Stewart Copeland is like a machine, but a human machine
1- why would you want a human to play like a machine..?
2- he speeds up alot. so no machine.,
A golden age of musical talent....when I look around for good new music in the 2020s there is absolutely none as great as this whatsoever.
Tedeschi Trucks band
Absolute facts…I don’t know whether to be happy or sad about the situation. However, so thankful for this three man symphony.
Watching during lockdown 3🥰
I said I'll listen to the first song, then do something else, but here I am on the last song 1/2 hour later. Just can't hit the stop button on the Police!
Can you wrap me around your finger, Maria?
Love these guys . Takes me back to a simpler time
Indeed !!!!
Wow ! Stewart Copeland the best drummer. Amazing!
At the peak, so world class.
Sting is like a good wine, becomes only better with years
One of the best bands ever. Steve Copeland is really a badass... Incredible the amount of good energy he taakes out from his drum playing.... Totally incredible. I love them. Sting is definitely one of my favorite singers ever.
Steve Copeland? rofl
I love their Giants stadium performance. I was there and 16 years old! I could watch this FOREVER…it is the BEST - my ultimate fan-out performance here though is Roxanne…the END with STING just rocks me to my core! GOOSE BUMPS!…and the jump at the end! Oh how I miss them together! ❤️
I was there as well. I believe I was 17. My friend won 2 tickets from a Long Island radio station to be right up on the floor. I remember it got hot as hades in the sun as Jersey often is. I just watched the U2 video reminiscing. On to Peter Gabriel next. Remember Yoko Ono 😬 God bless her. Lol
So cool that you were both there. I was 17 too and U2 and the Police were my two favs at the time.
Wow!!! I am jealous in a good way!!! That’s a true MEMORY!!!
A perfect triangle! Summers Is painter...playing colors on his guitar
Come and watch the Steward Copeland drum-show :)
The best musician there on stage.
All are great musicians 💯
@@JanieBorne but stew is the best
The police: a great band, rough, raw, and ready! They're one of the best!
the only concert that the band played entirely in their pajamas.
:-)))))
It’s cause they were about take a 20 year nappy-poo.
Fake News!
That is funny, but be honest you wish you were this cool.
Magnificent! The sheer energy and the fantastic musicianship. They were brilliant.
This is the best live performance of Message in a bottle I've ever heard. I remember watching it live on TV. Being a huge Police fan it was great seeing them perform live again after "breaking up".
I was there!!!!
LUCKY
The rumor all day was whether they were going to reunite because Sting kept saying "No, no, no". And then Branford Marsailes (sp.) had come out to play with someone earlier in the afternoon (I forget who) and he was still with Stings band, so I figured "Oh, well. that ain't gunna happen". I felt bad for Joni Mitchell because they placed her between U2 and this so she was actually being booed, Pete Townshend (whom I had gone to this show at all to see) didn't play because he father had literally died either that day or the day before and it ruined by buzz!!!! An interesting day with the low-light being Yoko Ono singing a couple of songs and trying to lecture us about........well, I was under the influence and couldn't understand a word she said.
@@stevedrums1675 LOL!
Stewart Copeland plays like he's driving to save someone's life. Sting has the best ear in rock, imo. Andy the ultimate less is more genius.
What an incredibly talented band !!
Each guy brings something unique , no weak link .
Police the most amazing musical group of my life, my life again is with them, when I listen them I come back in my wonderful past time because now I lost my live forever because my great sins!!!!
Fuck yeeahhhhh!
@marcomasini1106 sins are part of our good lives also baby!
They were so tight. One beast of a band.
That version of Roxanne actually gave me the chills. That song showcases Sting's wonderful vocal abilities as good or better than any other song he's ever done 💯💕
I love the police. recognisable, always. the drums, bass, voice, lyrics, melodies, rhythm...pure art.
My first concert was The Police Joe Louis Arena in Detroit. Stewart is my favorite drummer ever.
Mine was Black Sabbath at Cobo Hall.
You know your an iconic singer (Sting) when you invite another iconic singer (Bono) to share the spotlight with you in your moment, and not even care. That was the highlight of this show for me.
Copeland is the police. . As well as being the best drummer in the world
This was a brief reunion for the Amnesty International concert, after The Police had broken up in 1984. There was hope of a sixth studio album, but Stewart Copeland broke his collarbone, so it was shelved. Instead the band would not do anything of significance for another 20 years until announcing their 2007-2008 Reunion World Tour. I thankfully got to see them play in sold out show in Atlantic City on November 4th, 2007. Having grown up listening to their music but never seeing them live. This was an awesome experience.
I was 16 and could be biased but the Police and the 80s were magical haven’t seen/felt this since !!!
Nov 2021 - This is like opening an awesome time capsule. We're all thrilled *and relieved* to find the song writing and musicianship still holds up. 😊🙏
King of pain! I love this song!!!!
Where does Copeland get his energy and maintain his constancy and dynamics ….. insane !!!! Truly !!!!
didnt know they performed live after 1984

Didn't they also perform together for Live Aid?

Wow, they're pumped on this night!
Every time i hear U2 im reminded of how much i love the Police
They were at their best then. Superb! Police forever!!!❤
Steward was Fire and Earth, Sting Water and Ether and Andy the Air, very unique band indeed.
Can’t remember for sure how long it had been but seems like this was maybe a year or two after The Police had officially disbanded. It was a HUGE deal when they came back together for 3 or 4 of these Amnesty concerts. I couldn’t believe it. I was thrilled to see them a few nights prior(I think) to this in Atlanta. It was the first of their mini reunion performances and a massively great surprise to me. I was a fan but had never had the chance to see them when they were still together. I’m pretty sure I found out via the radio on the way to the concert that The Police would be there. What a great memory.
Wow! How I love these guys! I grew up listem to The Police, Sting and U2! They are amazing, wonderful, excelent songwriters, musicians, singers! I don't stop love them! The Police is my favorite rock band and U2 is the second! Sting and bono are handsome!
Long live Rock Long live rock !!!!!!!! Bye Katia
I grew up listening to them too we must be about the same age I was born in 1972.
absolutely handsome❤️
I was one of about 40 people who saw them perform in Toronto in the fall of 1978 at a very small venue. It didn’t even cost me $10. I still have the ticket stub and some very great memories.😃👍🏾
What Copeland does with his left hand is really awesome: those sick sidestick strokes and his powerful traditional grip technique. Simply amazing.
🛍️💿📹🃏🥉⛪🛩️🚀⛈️💧🏄💯⭐🥶😓😠
👗💃
Wait, they played a show in 86? In all my years I never knew that! 😯
Stewart definitely was making his mark, explosive and absolutely enjoying himself. He always hoped for a reunion. I'm a drummer myself and Stewart Copeland was and is my main inspiration. I saw them play in Amsterdam, back in 1978, in Paradiso. Since then, I was hooked...
Okay, Bono suddenly enters the stage, because 'Invisible Sun' deals with Ireland... People who are a bit up to date with the ins- and outs, know that Andy isn't such a fan of Bono and his mates. The expression on his face when the singing penguin enters the stage, tells it all..
Story goes, that after they finished their gig, they handed their instruments symbolically, over to U2, because then they were the greatest band. But just before Andy turned his guitar over to the U2 guitarist, he de-tuned his guitar in a proper way.... Always fun...
Thats cool... I didn't know that. I remember listening to this on FM radio live. I recorded it on 90 minute cassette. IIRC Howard Jones had a cool gig too this night.
Yeah, I heard that - about detuning their guitars before U2 got to use them. It was in music magazine article about the Police - and apparently both Sting and Andy weren't too fond of U2.
Nada que ver tu comentario la REAL MUSICA UNE NO LO CONTRARIO.
But if it's so, why did Andy ask The Edge to write the preface to his autobiography "One Train Later"? As an apology to him?
Besides, in his preface The Edge describes this gesture of handing the guitar as a metaphor for handing the torch of the greatest rock band in the world from The Police to the U2.
I was there!
Steve Copeland is amazing!!!
Who's Steve?
Stewart.
Copland was the 80' John Bonham. They never played a song the same way twice. Pure groove
Great analogy.....👍👍👍
And that way is only right
What a wonderful band !
I graduated from high school in 1981. Back then I had grown up with a lot of 1970's bands(The Eagles, Doobie Brothers, Boston, Zepplin, ect) and did not like the direction muisc was going in the early 80's. How could Gary Numan or Culture Club hold a candle to The Doobies? But most of the bands I liked in high school seemed to dissolve around the time I finished high school. Making matter worse was my younger brother becoming obsessed with The Police. He had all their albums and wouldnt shut up about them or stop playing them. Gradually, I started liking SOME of their songs and wound up loving Sting's Dream Of The Blue Turtles.
Fast forward to this concert. My younger brother had to work when this was shown on MTV. I promised him I would record it for him. When he got home, I started raving about how good they performed. My brother blew up and shouted,"I'VE BEEN TELLING YOU THAT FOR YEARS ASSHOLE!"
Did I become an avid Police fan? Not really.
But I will say these guys are talented.
Thats funny. Same thing happened with me and my brother. He loved U2. I eventually warmed to them for a while in the early to mid-80s.
Bloody hell. Gary Numan or the Doobie Brothers? The choice isn't too difficult... or shouldn't be... .
this is absolute bliss
Still one of the best bands ever - Sting Andy Stewart all equally talented in their own right
I never knew they were still going as late as 86
Lightning in a bottle. That’s describes the police, and all the bands and acts from the 1980s. We will never see it again. Sad, but I am glad I got to experience it as a young man in my 20s.
Love this first song. Message in a bottle They make me recall my teenage. Good music that brought me happinnes. Just 3 guys playing with much energy 💕🤩🎀
Stewart Copeland AKA...The atomic clock!!
Sting, a true gentleman !!!!! Thanks Sting for sharing a moment with me in 2007… Stewart same love ya man….
This performance was one of about 20 from various bands on 6/15/86 to honor Amnesty International’s 25th Anniversary. I’m surprised and disappointed that this isn’t mentioned in the description. It was an all day concert broadcast internationally.
Sting never ever played with this intensity in any of his solo concerts.
thats because the material was more jazz and he got older
Cause stings solo shit was crap
Less cocaine.
