As someone who frequents booktube, goodreads and other such circles, I've yet to see ANYONE talk about DC YA books. My only exposure to them are channels like these. Nobody cares about these unless it's to mock them. The (very) few teen girls I've met that read comics either go for the classics, more recognizable characters, or manga. It's just bizarre that they keep trying to cater to a demographic that has historically never been into comics, and I say this as a former teen girl who was. If I saw this on a shelf, I'd cringe and walk past it. But I digress.
As a long lover of comics, the only thing keeping me going to comic book stores is the old stuff from the 80-2010. Everything after that is just this kinda trashy retconning
The women who wrote those YA books sounded like they hated comic books and they wanted to make their own books. Those books are for them, not comic book fans.
Classic Constantine is the best Constantine. His stories were WILD. He was like Harry Potter mixed with Sherlock Holmes, but badass. He was one of the few characters who wasn't a perfect person back in the day. Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, etc. were portrayed as straight up good guys & 2-dimentional, but Constantine wasn't. He did everything he could & took every chance he got to get what he wanted, even sacrificing his friends & himself (literally, to demons). WIth that said, he was a likable character, especially with his cleverness & his Liverpool snarkiness. One example, he was exorcising a little girl, but the demon inside her was too strong for him to fight alone. So he called upon another demon to help him to fight the demon inside the little girl's body. He won, but the stronger demon who helped him asked for a sacrifice. Constantine thought he was gonna be the sacrifice. Instead, the stronger demon dragged the girl's body & soul to hell. That drove Constantine mad for a while. From there, he redeemed himself by fighting more demons to bring the girl back. Constantine screwed up a lot of time, knocked down but got back up again & learned from his mistakes. That kind of character development made me a fan of him. The YA version is just so cringeworthy.
@@arashimifune2853 Exactly! He's more like an adult R-rated type of character. He f*cked everyone (both literally & figuratively) when it's very necessary.
This has so many parallels to Zatanna: Jewel of Gravesend it’s almost terrifying. The angst here tho is ultra instinct level. It’s about people not really learning magic then learning about it, absentee fathers, and music. At least it’s at a more coherent level than Jewel of Gravesend, but it’s not saying much. 😅
Constantine has been one of my favorite DC characters since I watched the movie. He isn't perfect, but he does get the job done, even if it means he has to make some sacrifices. This book butchered him!
Purely to argue technically. Sarah j Maas is the author of the terrible catwoman soul stealer book, that was turned into a ya graphic. And shes pretty successful (even if i dont like her work)
Look how they have butchered my boy. John used to be a character when he walked into a room, everyone was on the edge. Every one would become uneasy just being in his presence. Because he exuded confidence that he is in charge, he has figured everything planned out, he had lies within lies, always a final ace up his sleeve. And he was crazy enough to try the most insane gambles. Fun fact, John made the strongest magic users of England, go insane and literarily piss their pants, because he crashed their party and went on a drunken rant about the nature of reallity and magic and drove them insane with his eldritch knowledge.
Constantine is a Brit. If he IS flirting with kids, they'd just give him a leadership position at the Beeb or, at worse, in the constabulary for Rotherham! (too soon?)
The one with Keanu? Keanu's version wasn't British, so the feel was totally different. I prefer the TV series one, with Matt Ryan. He got a TV series a few years ago. This version is more loyal to the original, though unfortunately he ended up only in the backseat in CW Arrowverse instead of renewing his series.
"Look how they massacred my boy" This is awful. Loved JC since Moore's Swamp Thing and Delano's Hellblazer. Some of the Vertigo stuff is amazing. Ennis' run was great stuff and paved the way for Preacher.
Distorted illusions ....THE definition of irony. If you really want to know/learn about Constantine, do not rely upon any info from the current fans. DC has mutated the canon of the character with a dozen reboots. The race and gender and other proclivity swaps of all the DC characters should be a hint.
"Sleight of Hand isn't much different from flirting. By which I mean that an expert can really decieve and leave you impressed but an amateur just embarrasses themself. It's all about misdirection."
I need to use that phrase "Not today" from now on for my goofy RP character who flirts maybe marginally better than he does and with less positive results.
I'd like to point out that the crazy old wizard who created John Constine pronounced his name "ContantIne" with a long "I". This person makes a pun about him being Contan-TEEN. I get that people have been saying it wrong for decades, but come on! This stuff can be horrible without being insultingly inaccurate too, right? Maybe not.
Im confused, so does the DC YA stuff need to have this neon, club pallette/atmosphere to it??? There are different types of young adults that don't identify with that type of aesthetic.
You know, if DC did want to appeal to YA crowds... Bring back timothy hunter. I know he gets compared to harry potter due to them looking similar (even though timmy and the books of magic seried came out years before the philosophers stone did) and how both are chosen one characters, timothy in this case being the destined greatest sorcerer of the current age when he grows up. Timothy is a pretty complex character, because he acts like a selfish little prick with not much foresight to his actions (hes a teenage boy living with his dismissive father, and also is british). He has to learn to be more responsible with his power and also navigate the world of DC sorcery where literally everyone is trying to kill him or bring him to their side.
Constantine, for those desperately in love with super smarmy British dudes. Honestly never got the appeal. Though in Justice League Dark, Constantine met God who decided to appear in the form of a Scottish Terrier, which was hilariously surreal if nothing else.
As a whole I have not been impressed by the DC YA books. The Superman one was okay. The newest one, the Barda one, is probably the best one of the lot because it actually tries to demonstrate some complex character and shows the character struggling with moral and personal choices. Not deeply, as its very constrained being a YA graphic novel, but I could see myself enjoying it more if I was a younger reader. The rest are mid to downright terrible. Constantine is such a weird choice to try and appeal to the YA demographic, though? The art isn't fantastic, but I'd call it largely competent and tries to keep the page engaging. But none of it really reads DC or even Constantine. It's so... sanitized, when a big part of Constantine's appeal as a character is that he's anything but. It tries to be weird to keep it interesting but the weirdness doesn't serve in making the book feel magical or mysterious. It ends up identityless. RE: Whatsherface saying Constantine is a good person, I think the going back to the magic lady and returning her book while confessing what he's done is supposed to be a redeeming character moment. He's supposed to be putting aside his pride to help a friend and admitting his faults. The problem is that it doesn't land because Constantine is so bland here. It's hard to view the moment as Constantine humbling himself before a person he wronged in order to save a friend when the story is just buoying him along for the sake of the plot. It doesn't feel like a decision he makes so much as the next required event. The fact that he never really seems to internally struggle with his choices (only their immediate consequences), has a romantic interest who basically supports him the whole way barring their little tiff that gets resolved way too easily, and his lack of reaction of losing the rest of his bandmates to his choices prevents it from having any real emotional value. The definition of bland. The whitebread of a character reinterpretation. Yeah, it's technically consumable without any issue, but do you really want it?
occult detective, (yawwn) how original. theology AND magic?...bs IP. never interesteed in constancetina (as later revealed) to begin woth so, imo, this is their worst YA yet. couldn't finish the film, with all it's hyper (erratic) cgi, even with kaneu...cage in ghost rider was far more impressive. at best, this IP was a decent supporting character in swampthing.

Constantine's dad was obviously a fantastic magician, he was able to dissapear for his kids whole childhood.

i love the voices you're giving the characters.

They are doing it out of spite. They want to drive the male audience away

@@milestrombley1466 Yup, that tracks with every bestselling authors writing comics.
Manga is way better. The only DC YA I’ve ever seen recommended was Victor and Nora and even that I only heard was “surprisingly decent”.

"First, I think of a man. Then I remove sense and accountability!"

It might be cool if any of these DC books had a likable character. Just once

You can find the film also titled "Constantine" on UA-cam right now, and that brother knows how to set a standard, my lovely little friend.
