Tiffany Ball shares an inspiring story of an housekeeper that made her understand the power of empathy in leadership.
With her experience of twenty years in the hospitality industry working for brands like Marriott and Hilton. She's concluded that my biggest asset has always been people. When you deal with people, you have to learn to be a different kind of leader. So one of the things that she'd like to share with you today that is the most important thing that she tries to take into my day-to-day interactions in communication with her staff is empathy. She'll tell you a little story that happened to her several years ago which made her understand the power of empathy and her team. She was a GM over a select serve Hotel in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and one of her managers, her housekeeping manager, came to her with an issue: a housekeeper could not seem to come to work on time. So she learned that if you empathize with the people on your staff, they will build trust and work for you even better because they know that you see them as human beings. So during this time, especially during coronavirus going on and things like that, the main thing that we have to keep in mind when we bring our staff back on is that we have to empathize with what they just went through. The fear, struggling, and the uncertainty. Only through empathizing are we going to build back the loyalty to our team to ourselves and our brand.
