He was also Mehmet's teacher but there is always a power struggle between Mehmet and Candarli Halil Pasha. When a Sultan is that young and no heir for his throne there is always an opportunity for the second strongest figure to be an usurper. After Mehmet conquered the Constantinople he killed Candarli and ended the power struggle.
