I think the producers explained it was because they think it flows better with just the recordings playing, plus it allows them to fix things in the studio in the meantime if something isn't quite right. Completely agree though, shame they stopped doing it after series 7

'Good 'old' decent guy competed too?...'
Many comedians didn't want to participate at first, but he took the risk. It's also why they got the others, as sort of a group - a group that Greg and Alex both knew well from other series and quizes, but also personally.
Twas a fine season. Romesh in that hazmat suit with the beard (almost like a balaclava), the white room and mellon explosion. Good dog... That image will last me a lifetime - the reaction of tim as cherry on top.
Series 7 for me also had a bit of the argumentative vibe, especially due to Rhod being such a 'good' friend to Greg and James' frustrated rants and observations. With a wang on top of the knappet. Bosh!

@@xRiizo True. There was so much hesitancy around the first show and the fact that Frank agreed, opened the way for the rest of them to follow. That first series was super important because it showed the rest of the comedians that the show was “safe,” that it wasn’t a Fear Factor of humiliation for comedians. It also helped that it featured some close friends such as Roisin (close friend of Greg’s) and Tim Key (close friend of Alex). Tim was also key in showing that you could try to “cheat” your way through some of the tasks.

He's 67, times that by 525,600 (which is the amount of minutes in a year) and you get 35,215,200 minutes.
In 67 years, you get approximately 17 leap years, so you get 17*527,040 (minutes in a leap year) + 50*525600 = 35,239,680 minutes in total.

The problem I have with Tim on rewatch is that instead of going along with the challenges and banter from the other contestants, he tends to shut them down with 'shut up' or similar. Not as fun.

Roisin was great but I'm so happy the female contestants going forward were far more down for the bit and throwing themselves into tasks (much love to her though, I know in context even coming in this show was a huge unknown)

In the first episode of the latest series, Greg made a throw-away comment about trying to be more nice. My concern is that UK Taskmaster may now start pandering to international audiences who don't quite grasp the nuances of British sarcasm and irreverence, as seen here in these make-pretend spats. You only have to look at UA-cam comments to see how upset people were getting when Greg laid into the contestants, forgetting that this is a great British comedy where this kind of behaviour is expected. I hope I'm wrong. There's always viewer adjustment to a new series of new contestants, so I'm praying that the latest series will witness more classic anarchic behaviour, like we see in this clip, with Greg continuing to passify them with his withering put-downs. I'm pinning my hopes on Sophie to provide some more bonkers, off-the-wall moments 😁
