I've been collecting antique Japanese dolls for many years and I love them! I enjoy the hunt when I find them in thrift shops.

Same here, and I love folks who don't know what they have....my best dolls came from that lack of knowledge!

So happy that I found this older post, as I just watched the 2022 series of the Michael Ayervais collection.

So the courtesan is typically called Tayu/Dayu. Or also the Oiran. They both had two or more komoro and Shinzo. They would usually have matching kimono and would have matching names, also would be in pairs. These green lips never happened this is most likely damage of skin nothing but they would have the bottom lip of red, and would blacken their teeth. I never saw a yartie in any of these videos. That would be the old lady your talking about that would be accompanying the Oiran. Also some of these dolls have the shamisam pick hair style. I’m sure there’s not a lot of information out there for you to know these things and I only know them from reading the books that I have. If you have any questions please feel free to ask me.

The 3 and especially the one in the red is NOT a courtesan! She is more like a high status lady-daughter! You can tell this by her hair style. Hair styles are very very important and tell the status and cast of the person. Before the merchant class started to have higher status because they could not wear the top not style. Also the girl sitting down is possibly a maiko or a daughter of a high status or rich family. Her hair style is called the peach. The second girl also is the same type. The long sleeves also tell you that she is unmarried and young, her kimono is called a Furisode kimono.
