Nice and to-the-point vid man. Other UA-camrs would spend 20 minutes showing us that.
We appreciate the lack of bs.👍
Your profile pic doesn't match how nice this reply is 😆
I first read your comment as ABS-we appreciate your lack of abs.
On all videos like this, I see far more people moaning about "other UA-camrs" making "20 minute videos" than the actual videos they're supposedly complaining about.
ikr, why the west feels so obligated to tell a philosophy + story + sometimes story of other people, as if they will be suspected if they don't do so

My eyes are filled with tears of joy. 29 years wasted without discovering this gem of a trick. Thanks a tonne.
Great video. This is called the Lapp knot as adjustable binding knot. In your video, you happen to tie it correctly both times (without calling attention to such), but (in more critical situations, generally) it matters which way the loop on the right goes through the knot. See here. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lapp_knot
So, it's probably good to get in the habit of being specific about how the knot is properly tied, so that what you do is useful and safe as a bend, a loop, and as a binding knot.
Great comment! Thanks for providing the link too. I appreciate you pointing that out to me.
Yeah, I watched and thought I need the „rest of the fking owl“ version , thank you!
i thought i knew how to do this when watching the video, but your comment and wiki made me confused i thin

None of his videos bother to make note of that kind of thing, which is why i prefer other knot tutorials
Dang 37 years on the earth to find that there is a more efficient way than the old bunny ears method my mom showed me as a kid! Love it.
I have 2 decades on you and am just learning this now too. I just learned a better way to tie shoes within the last few years as well. We're never too old to improve how we do things.
Makes you think, how many other things can be done better, right?

I've literally just attempted this on my shorts but failed due to being too fat to see the knot.
OOF this hits too close to home.
When you like your tool so much that you build a shed over it.
Allot of us have been their, these days fat is beautiful thanks to tik tok. I was lost at forming an ampersand weave & l thought l knew knots.
the benefit of this knot is that you can tie it very loosely over the belly and then sinch it
Do it before you put the shorts on. Also, do it as loose as you normally wear them so you can get them on in the first place. Honestly, I think they put too little drawstring on these things to begin with... some sort of conspiracy methinks.
I’ve been doing this wrong all my life. That’s a lot of years. Finally someone teaches us one of the most important lessons that we use every day. Txs! You’re a great guy. 👍
Wow! I’m 72 years old and this is the first time I’ve seen this drawstring method. Thank you very much for a concise UA-cam demo showing us a super useful knot that I’ll be using from now on to secure my tracksuit bottoms at weekly exercise classes. How come I was never taught this as a youngster in the Boy Scouts?
I have been wearing my gym shorts for about 15 years. No need to even tie them up anymore as they are already way WAY too tight now lol

This has got to be the most frustrating video I've ever watched. My brain simply doesn't understand how to tie this.
bro fr
tell me about it. I cant even do the first step ffs
I'm literally matching the actions and nothing works.
IMPORTANT: The right side bend needs to be shaped as shown, with the "working end" on top. If you shape it with the working end on the bottom, this knot will not stay tight with many line materials. See Wikipedia article on right/wrong ways to tie the Lapp bend ("unsafe Lapp bend variant").

Now if only I could see the draw string on my gym shorts
That's a slipped lapp knot, which is an opened eskimo bowline which is a bowline made around the loop end. It's also topologically identical with the mooring hitch.
Huh?
No it's knot!
I understood some of these words
There's always one of these guys in the comments.
ohh a knot expert
Seems great, though I wish the one side didn't always end up excessively long, even when I try to start the string side short.
A clockwise twist of the left hand's piece by the right hand starts the knot better for my hands. Yes, the rest of the knot needs to reflect the start. Each subsequent step is more natural and working the finished knot is as well.
Thanks for the suggestion OP, couldn't have done it without you.
If only this had been known in 1980. Thousands of nerds and geeks would have never been pantsed in gym class.
My life was empty and meaningless until I saw this.
Hahahahahhshahhs
So now your life is still empty and meaningless, but at least your gym shorts won't fall down.
I want to thank David Miller, on behalf of all Davids, for this deeply reflective revelation, and lack of recognition of the practical value of this admittedly mundane tutorial. Representing other more practical and less reflective Davids, this knot is awesome and I have already practiced it many times. I'm KNOT going to forget this!
@@76MUTiger well said, sir.
That's just knot funny...
Interesting, but it appears to depend heavily on the material being tied. I'm wearing my sweats at the moment, which have flat cotton drawstrings, and it's not nearly as easy to adjust as the video indicates. I can believe it's successful with a fairly hard, slick line but in my case it's faster and easier just to undo and re-tie the bunny ears.
It just loosens it's actually crap
So here's what we're gonna do, we're gonna tie a different drawstring to the end of your flat BS drawstring and pull it all the way through effectively replacing the old with the new desired drawstring.
I have also a flat band on my current adidas pants. I tighten more in two steps: I hold the top loop and and move it to the left to have the loose bit on the right side of the pants. Then pulling on the right end. It currently works well. If the band is sawn in one probably has to play with the loops a bit before pulling it tight.
I have the same strings you do but it works. Gotta manhandle the strings a bit tho
There’s always one Delbert in the comment section that can’t figure a simple task out so they think it’s the system that’s flawed.
This is the greatest thing I've ever seen!!!.... NO MORE SHORTS LOSSENING AND FALLING OFF!!!.... Love it, THANKS!
This is excellent, so simple and effective and easy to undo.
I have used a loop one end, threaded the other through twice and tightened, it will hold, securing with a slip half hitch. That has always been effective and simple to undo.
This that you show is even simpler and perfectly effective.
Thank you very much.
The one thing I learnt today that I will never forget for the rest of my life.
I mean this, sincerely. I LOVE finding out simple things I've been doing "wrong" and learning new ways to do them. Happens all the time. This is a favorite
Had to slow the video down to half speed and got it. Great tip.
Dude's killing it here
I have a method of my own and it is very usefull if u hate when the chord gets offset and one end stays inside the hole.
You can tie both ends of the string with a double fishermans knot and you can make it tight or lose at will but it always stays connected.
Took classes in the Army on knot tying. Has served me well all of my life.
this is by far the most amazing knot i have ever seen. Thanks for sharing :)

Not pictured: this leaves a MUUUCH longer loose end that you're going to need to deal with. It's usually not a deal breaker, but it can be annoying in some situations.
Still, excellent video, short and easy to understand. Thank you!
For drawstrings on the outside, I tie a slip knot in the long end to fake a bow.

Finally a solution to my problem, Thanks Brent!
I just tried it and it slips. Maybe a different type of drawstring would work better.
As a recovering stroke patient whose left hand was paralyzed, this method seems faster, much easier and more effective than bunny ears (I struggle getting the tension right). Thank you!
You can do this one-handed?!
@@samhain9394 when I left this comment I had thankfully already regained use of my left hand, but there was weakness and not a lot of dexterity for bunny ears. This way was easier and faster for me. Now that I'm further along in my recovery, I can tie bunny ears without a problem 😊
alright, I've watched 3 of your videos and you're doing this UA-cam thing so right. You're straight to the point, you're knowledgeable about the subject, you're a good teacher, you earned another sub.
The only issue with this knot I find is that I'm left with totally unreasonable length of untied string in the right hand, hanging all over the place. I can of course make say a slipknot out of itself, but it's somewhat ugly and inconvenient anyway. Do you have any ideas how to make this tidy on top of useful? The biggest reason I use the square knot with slipknot "ears" is how tidy it is, the strings are out of the way.
more videos should be short and sweet and get straight to the point like this one.

If anybody is wondering what is the name of the knot is, its the sheet bending knot and the way he used it very creative. the main use is to tie two ropes of different diameter or a sheet end to a rope
The knot works, but I can simply pull my shorts away from me and the knot loosens. It seems more applicable for casual wear like sweatpants and not for keeping your shorts/pants tight during physical activity.
Seriously. It doesn't seem to be as effective as everyone thinks. Too bad. I was hoping for something that really worked. :(
I can't get mine to fail the way you describe. Maybe you're not doing it correctly?
I think when you "pull everything tight" you need to pull it really tight, make sure it's properly locked in.
Same problem, I can get it but once it meets resistance loosens again. Did it just now on my draw string shorts haha.
I'll stick with a square knot.
Beautiful and simple. Thanks for the POV.. Be Well and Good Journey Richie
This is the best way to do this kind of knot. Thanks!
Brilliant! I tried a couple of dozen times to tie my drawstring pants with a method from another UA-cam video. Couldn't get it. Then this! Second or third try! There it is! Thanks
Great knot. I tend to end up with excess in the right side, so you may want to pretension and pull in most of the slack to the left before tieing this.
Great ! I just gota remember the"&" symbol and feed bend through top then over bottom and pull to tension , Spectacular !
Straight to the point.

Just fine? I did.
You, Sir, are a wonderful human being. Thank you so much for sharing such a straight-forward, and concise explanation to tie my pants without them always coming lose. You saved me from feeling slightly embarrassed from having to pull up my pants every few steps.
163 years on Mercury and this is the first time I see this type of knot. I will try this for sure.
Took me a couple attempts cuz the drawstring on my pyjamas are these horrible flat things, but I got it in the end. Bunny ears are great, but being able to adjust this is even better. Thank you!
I learned how to do the "better bow shoelace knot" (basically an extra loop around when doing the basic shoelace knot) about 20 years ago. I use it not just on my shoes, but tying shorts, etc.
Your knot looked intriguing, so I gave it a go with my flannel pajama pants. Got the knot set, but it refused to slide.
I'll chalk that up to the flannel material, and try again when I'm wearing something with a more forgiving/slippery cord material.
Cool video though! Easy to follow along and learn. It's videos like this that make me want to spend time trying to learn new knots.
🤯 well you just changed my life.
Try a double overhand like the beginning of a surgeon's knot if you want to lock it down and prevent slip while double wrapping the loop. Thanks!
My father ( who was a AirborneRanger in Korea) , taught me the extra wraps to lock my shoelaces. It's a lot easier than this And twice as quick. And I've never had them come loose. And got to show my my fellow recruits in bootcamp how to do this.
Try easing up on how much you tighten the knot at the beginning of you want to do this one. It makes a smaller knot than the better bowtie, which might be nice in some situations.
whole life I struggled, after this I will try to use your method. Hopefully no more struggling, thanks mate. Jij bent een kanjer.
Genius. I just tried it with a much thinner and smooth cord, and it works just the same.
great video and easy to follow
Neat, although the nylon webbing drawstring on my work scrubs still slips a bit when trying to attain the proper amount of tension. Gonna stick with my "cord lock" cam device, which has a little toothed wheel inside a teardrop shaped container. As tension is applied, the cord pulls harder on the wheel, which jams it tighter against the narrow end of the teardrop. Nearly flawless, and I can apply near tourniquet levels of tension without slippage.
This knot may work better with a different cord material than I have to work with.
Do you have an illustration of the thing? :D
Excellent! Clear, well explained and even shown in situ. And extremely useful, too! THANK YOU!!

****waiting patiently for summer....****
Only 235 days left bro. Stay strong
This is a great knot but the wrong application, it only tightens on one side so the material on that side bunches up. Maybe a great way to close a sack or something, has anyone got any other applications for this knot?
Guy ropes on tents perhaps?
Only tightening on one side is why he pre-tightned the left/ampersand side. As long as you pre-tighten that side, what you end up with should be close enough. Life is OK if one side is a little tightened compared to the other. I like the adjustability feature since I like it tighter when I'm up and walking around in my sweats and looser when I'm relaxing on the couch or taking a nap. It's nice to make quick adjustments without constantly untying and re-tying.

This is really cool. I actually never tie drawstrings ever since one time I was a kid and had a toilet tragedy while out in town because I couldn't get the string untied. It's annoying sometimes when the elastic is not strong enough and the stuff in my pockets keeps pulling my pants down, so now that I've seen this video I can start tying the strings again safely.

Thank you for this! After you tighten this knot, you can create a traditional "bunny ears" so the knot looks normal especially if knot is visible.
This will help with wet swim trunk drawstrings especially. Can't tell you how many times I anxiously tried to get that wet knot free to use the bathroom after a swim. I could have taken care of 1/2 the process in the pool but I'm too cultured to do that.

Brilliant! Thank you...
Just loosen them up to take them off still tied and then when they come out of the wash they’ll already be tied and ready to put back on
Also, the bitter ends will not draw up into the shorts and get lost. I have had to fish the ends of a draw string back out of the waist tube many times.

Cool knot! With one-piece drawstrings this will work well. Unfortunately some pants have drawstrings that don't go all the way round in 1 piece, but consist of 2 pieces, each sewn to the tunnel. With those, the method wont work so well.
Try taking up the slack on the & side before tying the knot.
