    REI! Hilarious.
We have a friend who is a licensed massage therapist. He had an Aztek for quite some time, and it was perfect for toting his table around. As I recall, he felt it was quite reliable. The Buick Rendezvous was built on the same platform, yet looked so different.

At the 99 chicago auto show i was at the prototype aztec display and was conversing with an engineer and studio designer when i was asked what i would change i told them to move the small park lamps off the hood and put bigger parklamps right above the headlamps ! They ended up doing it and i got a framed picture of the update and a thank you from GM ! I still have it to this day !

STUNNING vehicle, so practical, with innovative features!
A "minivan" with real back doors, one of the first compact FWD SUVs.
It may not look purty, but it looks rugged.
Cool things like HUGE cargo space, thoughtful details like a center console that also can be removed and be used as a cooler.
And all buttons designed to be usable with winter gloves on. Nice.
A tailgate designed for sitting, with "butt cups" in the tailgate, and radio controls back there for when you're enjoying a bonfire or tailgating before a game. So practical.
    SO many great features.
If only Pontiac had styled it a BIT more cleanly, like its corporate twin, the Buick Rendezvous, it would have been a much bigger success!
People buy and use these as mini campers for a reason. Lots of outlets, room, features, dependability and aftermarket options GALORE! (Like the Honda Element.)
GREAT travel and "lifestyle" vehicle, GM just bothced the styling... slightly. The Concept was great.
Looks great in gray or black that helps the body cladding "blend in " (until they finally painted it the same color as the rest of the body in its last years, but it was too late.).
There HAS been a more recent vehicle with a removeable console/cooler... sorry the name isn't coming to me but it was reviewed in the last 6 months or so.

I would have seriously considered getting one of these used if the 3800 had been an option. I’m guessing that wasn’t really a possibility since it doesn’t look like a 90 degree V6 would even fit in that cramped engine bay.

Besides the polarizing styling, the Aztek wound up the odd one out in Pontiac-Buick-GMC dealers. Once you got past its' controversial looks, it was as big and almost as pricey as the Rendezvous or the Montana minivan, only seated 5 but drove like a minivan. Next to it was the Vibe which cost 10 grand less, drove better than the sedan it was based on ("We Build Excitement" vs Toyota's mushpot sedan suspension) and got a solid 35 mpg, the GMC Envoy which was a familiar BOF pickup-based SUV, and the aforementioned Rendezvous and Montana which seated 7.

It’s another styling foo-pah. Just putting a normal painted hood above the existing grille, instead of that thing with scoops, aerofoils and orange blinkers either side, improves the frontal appearance instantly. However ahead of current trends the Aztec was, if it wasn’t so ugly more people would have bought it.

This makes mechanical parts super available to find. Her LA1 engine is also common to the Pontiac Grand Am and Olds Alero. They will be on the road for a long long time as parts are everywhere and new cars are $$$$$.

Guess the Aztek - as the GMC Envoy XUV - is pretty revealing of the reasons General Motors went downhill. Instead of focusing on build quality and efficiency, they chose to bring creative and revolutionary products. Too bad people only wanted improvement and evolution within what their were already driving. 20 years later, The Camry is still the best-selling vehicle in the USA.

7:38 - This was *not* ahead of its time. SUVs were everywhere. This is not an SUV, though. It was a half-assed attempt at a crossover, which is distinct from SUVs because SUVs have true 4WD with a transfer case. Even if we call this minivan a crossover, there were others on the market for years before this minivan arrived. RAV4, CR-V, Escape, and Forester were all in production. RX300 was already around, Volvo had its XC90, Acura was selling the MDX... Mazda's 1st MPV was a minivan-based "SUV", so Pontiac wasn't even first there. The Aztek blazed no trail. It was polarizing, but even that wasn't a new thing. Factory tents were available on cars 15 years earlier.

Is it worth the property value loss for your neighborhood? At best the neighbors are HOPING you make and sell meth and also, NOT, at the same time. Pontiac had the right idea hiding their inventory in back. One of those cars for people who need a non-sequitor of a tent to get them into a ... car. Better tents, cars and camping vehicles were available. If it were any cheaper, there would be an Asian in front pedaling the damn thing and it would probably still have a stone age 4 speed automatic, permanent warning lights, and lifter failure. Ooh it'd be a tough one between this and a Nissan Quest with only one remaining functioning door handle.

I had the opportunity to buy a Buick Rendezvous (sister car to the Aztek) but didn’t get it. Had it been an actual Aztek I would probably be still driving it today 😂

I think the Aztec would sell quite well if sold today, modernized of course.
