Thank you! I'm a fan of fine liners, but wanted to give fountain pens a go and I love both of mine! It's a little bit more upkeep with having to refill/cleaning the nib every so often, but it's so fun! What fine liners are your favorite to work with??
@@jaclynbaerart I mainly use the Micron pigment liners but have recently bought myself some Derwent liners and I'm quite enjoying how they apply to the watercolour paper I use. The Microns were just too fine for the paper I was using. It's fun to experiment with new supplies and find what works best 😊
I have some Derwent liners and like them too for my rough textured watercolor papers. It's so fun to play around with new art supplies for sure!@@sarahlucas1999
This was so fun! I love sketching with fountain pens. I’ve used the Kaweco and the twsbi. The Kaweco does have a cartridge converter, but it holds less ink than the regular cartridge, so I like using a syringe to refill them.
It’s so fun to sketch with fountain pens! Thank you for the tip on the refillable cartridge- I’ll need to get a small syringe too when I get the converter 🙌🏼
Your sketches are beautiful!! I have a few kaweco sports with various nib sizes, they're perfect for my small hands. The converter for them is actually not that great so I prefer to just refill the cartridge with a (blunt) syringe. You can also get samples from gouletpens or yoseka stationery to try more colors :) Oh and my favorite is a classic platinum preppy (wa). I write and sketch with this one for years now 🖤
Thank you so much for the tips! This is fantastic! Good to know the converter isn't so great, how do you go about refilling the cartridge? By the punctured end I'm guessing? And I'll have to try some samples - i love that idea a lot - thank you!
Yes, by the punctured end (same goes for your lamy safari). Just be aware that it's a giant rabbit hole to enter since there are so many beautiful inks. The pilot iroshizuku line is trustworthy to work in every fountain pen ☺@@jaclynbaerart
Haha thanks! I’m an organized person with all that I do 😝 one exercise I want to do again soon is an opposite of everything I do (so I want to paint big and messy instead of tiny and neat). 🙌🏼 have you ever done an opposite exercise? What’s your fav way of sketching?
@@jaclynbaerart I tend to keep things neat too. But if I have a piece of paper to scribble on, I will not leave it in peace until I have every square micron covered in paint, on both sides 🤣🤣.
I love my Kaweco Sport, but I've only ever used it to journal and not sketch! I also have a Twsbi eco pen that I use for writing too. Your illustrations are so lovely, beautifully observed! That Colorado Flora looks like a lovely book to reference!
It's a great pen! I'm enjoying it so much. oooh, I'll have to check out the Twsbi eco pen too. I've been using my Lamy Safari pen to journal with. 🖊 And thank you so much for your kind words Katie!
What a perfect size pen! I use dip pens mostly- I’m in the market for a fountain pen. I cannot imagine how glorious it would be to go to the Fabriano store!!!! They have such good quality tools and supplies!
It was so fun to be in the store! So many wonderful items I wanted to get 😝 I haven’t used dip pens in a very long time. Do you have favorite nibs that you like to sketch with?
@@jaclynbaerart I really like the fine nibs- my favorite is actually so old I can’t read the imprinted name on it- I got it in a box of art supplies that I bought at an estate auction (of a former draftsman) that was 20 years ago and it was old then! I recently tried the glass dip pens- don’t like the point(not fine enough) BUT it holds so much ink! I’m going to try to file it down a bit and make it smaller.
Yes fine nibs are great! My Lamy is an extra fine nib and it’s fun to write/sketch with. That’s so cool your fav nib is so old you don’t know what it is. That’s a perfect find!! I never thought to look at estate sales of artists - such a great idea! And I havent tried glass pen nibs before, that sounds so cool!
@@jaclynbaerart some of my best funds have been estate sales- my “H”easel for one, also so very old and perfect. I am on the hunt for a “new”drafting table. I have one that I purchased new about 30 years ago but I’d love to add a second one to my studio- a nice sturdy old one!
That sounds amazing! I love that you have an old easel that works perfectly for you. I love it when I find perfect items secondhand for my studio. It's a great feeling! I hope you find a "new to you" drafting table! 🙌🏼@@hannahcrumley3103
Just found your channel. Loving you sketches. I am a beginner and looking for a good fountain pen. I have Kaweco sport and Safari in mind, what would you advice. I am looking for a pen for everyday sketching (literally everyday) 😅
Aw, thank you so much! This Kaweco sport is a good little fountain pen for sure. I also have the Safari and love it too! As for an everyday sketch fountain pen, out of the two I have, I think the Lamy Safari would be a good fit!
@@jaclynbaerart Hello! I think I have, but I really can’t remember. I think I don’t use it often because I don’t have a water-resistant ink. I like to ink my drawings before applying watercolour so being water-resistant is important.
@@jaclynbaerart Cool! The water-resistant ink that I have is not fountain pen friendly. I tend to use it in roller pens. (I hacked mine open and filled it with the ink 😄. It’s just such a waste to through it away.) I occasionally use the ink with nibs and dip pens too.
That's funny you hacked it open to refill it! I agree, it's a shame to throw away roller pens. I have these two that I really like so I got refillable ink cartridges so I could keep using them! I haven't done dip pens in a really long time, but it would be fun to get some again.@@awatercolourist
