After departing its display location at St. Paul Union Depot to go to its next stop in Duluth, the train made its way up the BNSF St. Paul Sub. to the junction at CTC University, near Northtown Yard, where it stopped for other traffic. After what seemed like a long wait the train crossed from Main 1 of the St. Paul Sub. onto Main 1 of the Staples Sub.
The first clips show some of the freight traffic at CTC 35th Ave as seen from the St. Anthony Pkwy bridge. Then I relocated to the University Ave overpass to catch the Big Boy run-by.
The old and new St. Anthony Parkway bridges have been a Godsend to generations of railfans in the Twin Cities despite their orientation that produces less than ideal lighting. Who knew that the most thrilling sight we’ve ever seen from this perch would come from Union Pacific? I was in Milwaukee when Big Boy visited so great videos like this are much appreciated. I’ll be sure to clear the calendar if it visits again though.
I saw it last Wednesday and Thursday in St.Paul. What a huge machine. I wonder how much more it would cost to transport goods if the US rail system was still using steam locomotives?
I heard in a documentary that even the first generations of diesel locomotives required only 1/3rd of the labor to maintain and only consumed 1/2 of the fuel to power it. And that was in the 1950's. It has to be exponentially better now almost 70 years later.
Thanks for posting

That’s a lot of tracks! Where’s Northtown?
It's north of downtown MPLS.
This is the first video where actually noticed how engineer hangs our the window... That can't be comfortable?? He doesn't do that the whole time right? And at least this video had alot of whistle blowing, saw one from when it when thru Iowa City for some reason never blew the whistle but the diesel kept blowing it's whistle.
They have an armrest for him to lean on.
Dude they have arm rests and they have an awning above the cab window
Hold up never mind
Big boy doesn’t have an awning but in pictures you can very well see an arm rest it’s massive
hah not far from my home. going to duluth i presume.
Still don't see the point of all of the cars. I assume just for the look of having a full train. Should of just hauled freight, since this whole trip didn't have passengers except the one excursion. Big opportunity lost this whole tour not selling tickets to ride this train through it's midwest tour.
There's a video somewhere on youtube where the head of the UP steam program explains that each car they bring with them has a purpose. I saw 3 tenders for fuel and water. One or more of those rail cars is carrying spare parts and other maintenance stuff. There are cars for the crew that travels along with the locomotive. And of course they have to bring a diesel locomotive along if they're going to travel on the main line.
Having passengers costs more money in the long run. One of the reasons the railroads gave up passenger service to Amtrak. Also, if I remember correctly, the excursion started in Omaha, which is why all the cars were staged here. I'd be willing to bet they cut some of them off, toward the end.
They bring a diesel in case they break down because it happens and they can’t stop the whole line that they are on and the diesel provides power for the passengers
There’s a lot of people who hate the big boy calling it cringe
Because apparently they think anytime a locomotive gets restored that it’s cringy idk why
