Some plants can even be strengthened by actually more or less breaking their stems! In cannabis growing people will frequently crush the stems to bend them into specific shapes for efficient growth, and the damaged part will grow into a hard, woody callous people usually refer to as knuckles, and they make the plants way less prone to collapsing under the weight of their own flowers. Plants truly are magical.
This is a good strategy to avoid fungal infections if you notice it happening, I grew pumpkins on my balcony and thought to use a fan to give them air because they were so leafy, the wind from the fan reduced the fungal infection a lot. They were obviously too cramped which was the problem but the air really helped.

I learnt from my horticulture tutor, that fans are the best thing to have in a green house. Not only it cools you and the plants down "as it gets frickn hot in there during summer!!" (Her words) but it also helps the stems grow stronger...much like shaking your indoor plants on a daily to strengthen the trunks. If you have flowers in a green house,set a fan next to it and it will blow the pollen around if you can't get pollinators in the house.
I'm growing seedlings in my semi truck this year and have noticed the same kind of thing from riding around in a vehicle for 10 hrs a day. :) Take your plant babies on a road trip. :)

Ive been using your advice to start landscaping/gardening at the storage place i work at, heres some things ive learned starting seeds for the first time. I knocked over a few of my seedlings because my garden wand is too harsh, so be verryyy careful or get a soft watering can. Another thing to note is that people arent kidding when they say they need alot of light. I was putting them by a window but i totally forgot that its one-way tinted. they are thriving now that i put them outside in the full sun. I overwatered mine initially but the fan helped dry out the top of the soil when rainy or i can put them out in the sun.
Wow, I did not know that !! And, it could be used for seedlings inside that one has to harden off or protect from crazy winter weather in Spring / area of the Southeast mtns.
Another factor is also t make sure the plant gets plenty light, if it doesn't it is going to seek it out at grow too tall for their thickness. Also make sure so fertilize them (just not so much that you burn off the roots)
Good to know! I started tomatoes (beefsteak and roma), verbascum, milkweed, and Canterbury bells indoors a month ago and they're barely over 2" tall. Since her stroke my mom is always cold so I hardly ever get to put the fan on but I'll try to put it on and aim it at my seedlings. I want them to be nice and strong for when it's finally warm enough to plant here in NY (usually around Mother's Day).

A fan helps a lot to prevent fungal or mold issues too, but sometimes it's hard having one in a window. 😅 If you want strong stems you can also brush your hand (gently!) through the seedlings mimicing a breeze or rotate them daily. That way they're constantly bending in opposite directions to get to the sun. I don't have a fan, and my seedlings aren't leggy or weak because I rotate them daily. 😊

By the next day, some have already flipped to face the new direction. I turn them again, and keep repeating. My tomatoes have nice thick stems, and everything has bushy, even foliage. Like the peppers, flowers, ect. No bare spots like when they only face the same direction.
I started using a growtent with lights this year and installed a cheap usb powered PC fan on each shelf to move the air about and to move the plants about. My toms were nice and sturdy when they went to get planted out, better than previous years.
Thank u. A window is what most use. I closed in my porch w windows but it faces west n I have a 70 ft. Old Maple shading. I have lived here 44 yr.s .nary a shrub when got this dear old house. I have planted like 44 treea and some shade my yard now. My lawn doesn't burn off now but not enuf sun to grow a lil garden. The driveway side is tOO hot. I tried to grow a hyacinth and got 4 sunflower seedlings. Ha! Birdseed. I will let the birds have those.
I can agree to this my first Sour Diesel from had a grow tent and small fan maybe 4 inches this thing made my Baby’s stalk the size of a silver dollar branches maybe alittle bigger than a dime❤❤❤ that wind is ESSENTIAL to any indoor grow ✌🏾
Great suggestion - I did plant physiology & aseptic propagation (tissue culture) for graduate degree. Primary research was around elicitor responses bc aseptic plants build no structure (lignin, celluloses & structural compounds). We were extracting triggers or elicitors for the structural response in plants while aseptic. My point is that physical movement is a brilliant stimulant idea for structure development in aseptic plant propagation industry !!! It is analogous to liquid single cell culture agitation. Aforementioned is to aerate & exchange gases & nutrients. However, your practical mechanical suggestions could prove meaningful!
I've done this for ages. I can't remember where I heard about it. A lot of people don't know about it. I only turn the fan on for 30 minutes, twice a day. It doesn't have to be on 24/7.
I live on rain forest. Treess hardly break from strong wind, they bend. But when live in Plain area, there was some wind and almost all trees near my house had their branch broken down. (Same species as my home town)

My cheery tree fruit is totally invaded by them too. I will not spray. I love my Razberrys. They r so bug free! And easy care. Just cut down dead stalks n trim em in Spring a bit.😊 Apples too. Bird pecks . No frost die. No fort. No poison. Org.apple's .cheap! My plum is soo pretty but keeps dying a beanch at a time. Hates cold. My brown Bosk ?Pear gets the best color of all in Fall. Awful fruit. But for that color. Bake the dang pears. Other treasure my big beau.Norway Spruce. It got big fast. Great shade . My Ponderosa Pine the birds love for nesting. They tend to fall in wind tho. Hardwood only near your house. Always wanted a Japanese Maple Planted one by the plum. Slow going. That plum is growing a new tree from a sucker tho! Never plant q cherry in your yard. They spread everywhere !

Sometimes I tickle my plants to get the same effect, not as effective but they like it.
Lightly brushing your seedlings with your hand is a great alternative if you don't have a spare fan, just isn't as consistent as a fan.

The cannabis gardeners have known this for as long as they've been around... I learned it from them and start all my peppers with a fan from day 1

You should try growing your pumpkin vertically next time to save space, provide more room in between the leaves, and in turn reduce fungus.

Yep! I keep a small one on low with my indoor plants. I was doubting at first but 2 mo in, I was a believer.

I learned this in the bio dome they made where people lived inside a glass house for a year. Aka NO WIND,
so the trees did not grow very well.
