  • Gary Kemp grew up in Islington, London, on the tougher side of the Essex Road. He first started playing guitar and writing at the age of eleven, but decided he wanted to be in a band after watching Bowie throw his arm around Mick Ronson and sing abut a starman. Gary attended Dame Alice Owen’s grammar school where he met the boys who would eventually become Spandau Ballet. He’s been a Bowie Freak, a Soul Boy, a Punk and a New Romantic - the latter a style of music which he himself helped to invent.

    Gary Kemp is so underated, superb guitarist and songwriter, the work he's doing with Nick Masons Saucerful of Secrets is brilliant, great interview.

    How can you talk about your band for one and a half hour and mention the names of the other bandmembers just once?? Only Gary Kemp is capable of doing that.

      He is a show off. 'I went to grammar school.' Said it twice too.

      @@j.schermer3523 fake accent too. He did not grow up speaking like that. Witness his brother. Not a person I would have chosen to play Ronnie Kray.

      @Colin Grigson It's obvious you're not aware of the history of the band.

    • @j.schermer3523
      @j.schermer3523 2 роки тому

      @Colin Grigson Royalties are for the songwriter, but in Spandau they had a gentleman's agreement that they would share 50 percent of the royalties. They did for a few years and everybody Was happy with it. When Gary divorced his wife he needed the money himself and without informing the others he stopped paying them. Tony, who had a young family, almost had to sell his house and Steve got a nervous breakdown and left the UK for many years. He even had to give his saxophone to Gary to pay his debts.
