Install a car seat like a pro: Inside / Outside Trick

  • Pulling the tail of the belt - either the LATCH belt, or the vehicle's lap belt, or the vehicle's shoulder belt - from INSIDE the car seat can often make the difference between sweating and cursing and still having the car seat be loose vs. getting the seat tight without the need for swear words.
    There are some seats where you can not pull the tail of the belt from inside the seat - these are typically found on some forward facing seats that have a solid wall of plastic between the child's back and the belt's path.
    There are also a few seats that are the exception to the rule where you will have better leverage pulling the tail from outside rather than inside - but really, these are the exception.

    Not to be dramatic, but your video may have just saved my child's life! I borrowed my husband's car today and noticed when putting my 18 month old son in there that the car seat was super loose. I couldn't get it tightened and ended up driving to daycare with it loose. Thankfully nothing happened but now I feel like a really bad mom! I just now googled how to tighten a seat and found your video. This worked amazing! I was worried I would have to switch my son to forward facing but after watching this video I am so relieved. Thank you a million times over.

    I spent a good 30 minutes trying to get my daughter's seat tight enough. I watched this video and was able to fix it in less than 1. Thanks!

    I have installed and reinstalled my Maxi Cosi Pria 70 a bunch of times with LATCH but never felt like it was really as tight as possible. I just watched this video and tried it out on my seat and I am horrified at how much tighter I was able to get it. I can't believe I was driving my baby around with it as loose as it was... but I am SO GLAD I watched this and ran out right away to fix it! THANK YOU!

      +Siobhan Smith Also - why don't the manuals just advise to tighten this way?! It so clearly works better than the way the instructions describe!

    I gotta try this! I can never get rid of that bit of slack on my convertible car seat.
    So you DON'T have to push that button down that the tail goes through? I am always trying to push it down while pulling the tail.

    • @thecarseatlady1
      @thecarseatlady1  7 років тому +1

      The button you are talking about is only used for loosening the strap. Tightening you just have to pull the strap.

    • @thecarseatlady1
      @thecarseatlady1  3 роки тому

      Be sure that you are wiggling the car seat as you are pulling the strap - the wiggling is a key part of getitng a car seat tight.

    Hi car seat lady, I have a Graco extend to fit and a 2008 Honda Accord (4dr). I have it in the middle with both the middle lap belt and the latch straps attached. If I tighten the car center lap belt, the car seat eventually ends up leaned over and if I just use the latch system, the seat moves all over and doesn't seem secure. I was told by a dhoula this was safest to have it in the center with both the latch system and the center seat belt. Is there anything safer then this? What are your thoughts on the rear right/left side? My son is 22 months and about 25 lbs. I don't think this is safe to have him in a seat that is leaned on it's side but keep getting told it's safest in the middle as long as both latch and center seat belt are used. Thank you.

    • @thecarseatlady1
      @thecarseatlady1  6 років тому

      Your Honda does not allow the use of the lower anchors to install a car seat in the center. We would recommend installing your extend2Fit on one of the side seats using the lower anchors as you'll get a more secure installation like that than with the seat belt (which as you have seen will tilt the seat on its side).

    Thanks! Do you know if this works for the Chicco Nextfit? We can't get it remotely tight enough in our 2010 Ford Focus!

    • @thecarseatlady1
      @thecarseatlady1  9 років тому

      +Jamey Stamens It works for the "pull 1st" strap. The "pull 2nd" strap works best when you pull it straight down towards the ground.

    Do you put the baby in the car seat already installed in the car?

    • @thecarseatlady1
      @thecarseatlady1  3 роки тому

      Yes, with a convertible seat like this the car seat stays installed and you bring the child to the car seat.

    Does this work on a Diono Radian? Thanks.

    • @thecarseatlady1
      @thecarseatlady1  10 років тому

      Carolyn Hardy - it works on the forward-facing Radian, but not the rear-facing Radian. This is one of the reasons that the Radian is much easier to install forward-facing than rear-facing.
