    For future reference on the Avery labels. You grabbed the Inkjet version, you need the laserjet version since you used a laser printer, otherwise they get screwed up like they did in the video.

    • @TechDeals
      @TechDeals 7 років тому +47

      Yea, you wouldn't think it would matter, but it does, they are different... also, set the printer to "label" mode when printing, it adjusts the way it prints to a thicker surface...

    • @gavincurtis
      @gavincurtis 7 років тому +29

      The inkjet versions have a special coating to keep the ink from being absorbed in the paper. Toner doesn't fuse to it very well. Not pointing out the obvious, but mentioned it just in case somebody wanted to know the specific difference between inkjet and laser paper.

      Yep, as can be seen at 4:06 in the video the package is of InkJet variety labels. If a "type" designator is on a product, it is often for a good reason (though sometimes just for marketing)

    I watch fine art restoration videos too, and he’s addressed that “don’t touch them, let them look ‘old’!” mentality as well. His thoughts (and mine) are that by removing the ravages of time and making the piece look like the artist - or maker - originally intended is the best way to honor the piece. A well restored item can last another 100 years, and so on, which helps preserve history. Plus items that look well cared for are usually going to KEEP being well cared for.

      There is merit to leaving things as they look. For example: with archeological finds. It is best if they are left as they were found and replicas are made on how they might have looked.
      However, with art, and useable items, it is another story. Keeping them functional is better than letting them rot...

    • @emilycampbell6375
      @emilycampbell6375 5 років тому +8

      that's.. not even true, they never "remove the ravages of time", they actually use completely reversible inks and patches which can be removed at a later date, and if a art piece is restored it's always made 100% what work has been done and can be completely reversed, making game labels and trying to pass them off as legit is the complete opposite, this is like if an art restorer painted over a damaged work of art and didn't tell anyone about it

      If people are buying old games to play them, then they won't care if the labels are original or re-manufactured. If someone buys a game to speculate and make huge profits, then they get all they deserve because it's people like that who put the prices of old games out of the reach of those that buy the games to play.

    • @primtones
      @primtones 7 років тому +18

      It's an interesting ethical discussion though. This is a fact: those traces of use are now gone forever. He did a wonderful job, but he erased a tiny bit of history in the process. Those cartridges were authentic, although ugly. Now they're pretty, but they're inauthentic. It's all about what you value the most. Reducing the argument to a question of ownership kind of ruins the discussion. Of course the owner can do what he want. But this was a discussion about restoration versus conservation.

    • @Mistraker
      @Mistraker 7 років тому +12

      Mats: If it were something rare, hard to come by, etc, I might have an issue with it. These are not rare games by any stretch, and anyone can buy multiple copies on eBay for very little money, in much better condition than these. If he were re-labeling Earthbound or something, that's a different story.
      Some people also have issues with altering old gaming consoles to repair or restore them, or get them to work with more modern TVs, or have better video output.
      I personally like to keep consoles as original as possible, but repairs and restorations (if done well), I have no issues with. Even a video mod to make it work with a modern TV, I'm more or less OK with, again, if it's done cleanly. Hardware is more interesting if you can use it, after all.
      Everything has a finite lifespan. All of these old consoles and games and computers we like to collect is going to break down and stop working one day, and no one makes parts for most of it anymore. Some examples should be preserved in museums and the like, but I feel like we should do what we can to keep the rest in action as long as possible, even if it leaves things in a not entirely original condition.

    People that complain about your restoration videos fail to distinguish the differences between restoration, preservation, and conservation. You are doing genuine restoration, which is about appearance and function. Preservation and conservation are more about keeping original materials intact even to the point of losing functionality. You ain't no museum! I think your analogy to classic car restoration is particularly apt. I love your learning process!

    • @Silanda
      @Silanda 7 років тому +6

      You're right, I view it as restoration too. I do wonder if people who complain about video game restoration also complain about art and antique restoration. I suspect not.
      While I believe that a seller of a restored item has the moral duty to state that it is restored at the point of sale, I don't see why they should have to do more than that, especially if it's to the detriment of the look of the restoration. Do restored antiques have to have statements like "restored veneer" embossed into them? They do not.

      Mike - totally agree. As a mechanic who has restored many “classic” cars over the years, it often doesn’t make sense to keep original designs that were known to be faulty. Some guys do - they want an all-original, numbers matching, just as it was when it rolled off the assembly line type car. That’s fine, but I’m not one of those guys, and I make that very clear to the people who offer me resto-jobs. I’ve only done 2 of those and I didn’t enjoy them nearly as much as the “regular” resto-jobs. In the end, it’s whatever makes YOU, as the owner, happy.

    As somebody familiar with the ethics of conserving and restoring historical artifacts, I can say that from a historians point of view, you are doing nothing wrong. The most important thing in restoration is documentation, which you do meticulously in these video's. So all the information about the objects earlier state is preserved which is the main goal.

    • @thegardenofeatin5965
      @thegardenofeatin5965 7 років тому +17

      especially since these aren't unique artifacts, they were made in huge quantities with large numbers surviving today, and I'm sure there are pristine examples on display at electronics, computer or video game museums.

    • @InsanePsychoRabbit
      @InsanePsychoRabbit 7 років тому +10

      Agreed. I took a whole class in museum curatorial practices. Museum restoration and conservation work often involves scrubbing off all the old dirt and touching up the paint and/or taking something apart and putting it back together again - of course, done with extreme care and documenting every step of the process. The idea is to make the object in question more closely resemble its original state (including returning machines to working order) and make them last longer as well.
      If you were to re-sell these carts, you should state that the labels are reproductions.

    • @thegardenofeatin5965
      @thegardenofeatin5965 7 років тому +5

      I would agree, in fact if I were doing this project I would probably include in the copyright text "Original cartridge with reproduction art."
      Another ramification here is intellectual property. In some cases, the exact things David did are considered IP theft. Is it in this case?

    • @InsanePsychoRabbit

Maybe you want a coin that has an historical value (the printings on it) as well as a visual value (a nice shink look). I never understood the whole "you shouldn't mess with it!" argument. I completely agree with you, it's mine I want it to look nice.
    I bought an old singer sewing machine. Stripped off the old worn out japanning, filed down the casting, bondo, sanded it glass smooth and had an autobody shop paint it. They only charged me $20, and they just happened to be doing a candy-apple red job.
    According to the collectors I "destroyed" it. It's mine and I want it to look nice. Yeah the machine is 120 years old. By the time someone who cares gets ahold of it again, it will be another 80 years old and I will be dead.

    I can understand the difference between painting a vintage car and replacing labels on game carts. But im a strong believer in "its mine, i can do what i want", and support you exercising that right too!
    Had i done this, id of only done 1 thing different. Id of used steaming water to remove the stickers (like removing stamps to collect them!), allowed the label to dry and then put them into a plastic sleeve that i would keep with the game or its manual or in its box, if somehow that exists.

      I was initially worried about this problem too when I finally made a few labels myself this afternoon however when I applied the glue to the paper and then put them on the cart and smoothed it out with my fingers and a micro fiber cloth the seam virtually disappeared. In general I love the end results however I do wish some parts of it were a little less wrinkled. Maybe when it's fully dry and the adhesive has had some time to cure it'll look just fine. 😀🎮💞😉

    I buy and sell a fair amount of games and electronics on eBay. I generally restore everything before I sell it. Here's a few tips for games:
    Clean the game contacts with a cotton swab and Brasso metal polish. The swab will turn black/green with oxidation. After that, wipe it off with a tissue.
    Clean the cartridge housing with cotton balls (swabs for detail work) and rubbing alcohol.
    Remove labels with Zippo lighter fluid. Douse the label and let it sit for about 2 minutes. It removes self-adhesive labels (and stamps for collecting) like nothing.
    Reproduction labels can easily be bought online. They have the same plastic coating and look amazing. They are virtually indistinguishable from the originals. That said, one supplier I use includes minuscule text in an inconspicuous area that says "reproduction label".
    I also recommend buying cheap, shovelware (think AVGN) NES games that you can keep on hand for when you need a new housing for a good game. If you buy a game like Zelda, Mario, etc that has a cracked housing, thus being dirt cheap, you can easily restore it and flip it.
    I also replace game save batteries, but that's another tutorial.

Of course "normal" or casual gamers/non-collectors would be more likely to play these games on the Nintendo Virtual Console/download them vs. buying a physical cartridge anyway.

      To use the same reasoning as in the video - I know a guy with a 6 decades old Jaguar MKV convertible. He had the choice to order a original headlight frame for a few thousands or reproduce a mirror copy from the other headlight in a professional 3d printshop that could print to steel and chrome. The price, including the work of the CAD guy who meassured the piece and drew it in 3D, was a little under $800 and nobody could see the difference other than that it was really shiny and brand new. The car in its current state is worth over half a million. I doubt that a potential buyer would notice it or care for it since all the rest is original.

    spray on the paper, not on the cart... always let it dry a bit it's how it's supposed to use. I do that with many games at our store, it removes a bit of value on rare games but a torn label would be worth less anyway... a tip I can give you just put the label on a wider piece of paper and spray from a good foot distance so it isn't wet. let it dry about 10 seconds and then stick it!!

    • @InterCity134
      @InterCity134 6 років тому

      Indeed - the way he used spray adhesive is NOT the correct way to use it (RTFM) - as was evidenced by the solvent bleed through - You always spray and let sit for some time, and if you REALLY need it to stick, spray on both surfaces and let sit.

      collectors are hoarders, its a mental disability. A coin should be worth as much as marked on the fucking coin.
      lol at how old 25cent coins worth thousands. What does it do? sits in a hoarders "collection" Thats the only way it can have "value". Unless the coin is from a crazy period in time, or needed to be studied for science, or something should it be worth more, but a "oh, this version is rare, its worth 10,000 and this one thats almost the same is only $1000... they but equally as useless but this one has an extra line on it thats not supposed to be there! I know people want authenticity but these carts are getting really old and showing their wear and tear over the years. Eventually they are going to have to be restored to some extent. I dont see the big deal in replacing a label as long as it stays as true as possible to the original label. It might devalue them for resale but its not always about reselling. Like you said they are yours and you should enjoy them however you want to.

    • @primtones
      @primtones 7 років тому +2

      The issue I can think of is that you lose infomation about paper quality, print quality etc. when you completly replace the label. An old label can contain a lot of information other than its graphic design.

    • @YukkuriAteMyBaby
      @YukkuriAteMyBaby 7 років тому +4

      Problem 1 - Untrained amateurs following the advice laid out in this video may caused irreversible damage to their rare/valuable games.
      Problem 2 - Failing to provide any warnings as to how this may impact the value of a game could lead to people unintentionally devaluing their collection in a way they later regret.
      Problem 3 - Failing to include any warnings that indicate these are reproduction labels adds uncertainty and instability to the collector's market. Relabeled games, regardless of their owner's original intentions, always end up either destroyed or place back into the market due to theft, sales or the death of the original owner.
      You might not have a problem with the concept of relabeling, but can you see how the information presented in this specific video is irresponsible, given that there is absolutely zero consideration given to why someone might NOT want to go ahead and do this to every game they own?

    • @h3xknot
      @h3xknot 7 років тому +1

      you shouldnt attempt this if you have no kind of skill in doing so. I am not so sure how hard it is to put a sticker on I never have any trouble. If you are a collector of games you already know about what devalues them. Not everyone wants to resale their collections. Also paper doesnt last forever at some point its gonna have to be done if these things survive the test of time . You could argue everytime John Riggs fixes a game he is devaluing it also cause its not original anymore in a lot of cases

    • @TVsMrNeil
      @TVsMrNeil 7 років тому +8

      Right, unless he's actually selling them as originals, nothing he's doing is wrong. It's for his own personal use, and as long as it remains his property, he is accountable to no one else. It's no one else's business.
      Besides which, THIS is what's getting collectors' panties in a knot? This is nothing. I'm sorry to say, but collectors just need to get used to it. It's not going to be too much longer before we can make factory-quality labels at home, and once that happens, all the "rules" are out the window.
      Get used to it.

      Cold Roll Laminating is alternative to thermal laminating film that require no heat to activate the adhesive. No warm-up time necessary. Similar to using standard adhesive tape to cover your document, cold lamination is perfect when the precision quality of a thermal heat laminator is not necessary. Or when the material you are using cannot withstand the heat of thermal lamination. Roll lamination film preserves and protects documents. Roll lamination film can be used to laminate posters, maps, signs and other documents.

      I finally invested in a set of Scotty Peelers after reading about them. It took awhile to think about...because why waste money on something your fingernails can do? But, I am now convinced! A set of 3 plastic and 1 metal can be found for less than $10. If you peel lots of small (or even just a few large) labels, it's worth a few bucks!

    This is great info. I wouldn't want to do it for my cartridges. But I'd definitely do it for floppies! I did notice a bit of overlap with the tape. But wider tape can definitely be easy to find if you ever wanted to redo them to make them perfectly seemless.
    Also, when it comes to removing labels, I usually soak them in water, run them with my thumb then use isopropyl alcohol to get rid of the gummy residue. I do this alot on thrift store labels on CD and DVD cases.

      The lesson is: electronics are fine getting wet - so long as there is no POWER applied to the circuits. They are water resistant. Just let them set out and fully dry (I'd recommend hours or a day or more depening on how many nooks and crannies there are - eg if water got between the chips and the circuit board). Then reassemble. Or use a dehumidifier in a small room/big box if you need it.

    Dang, the hooting and hollering in this comment section is rather hilarious. No, he did not take a mint condition antique car and paint it for the hell of it... he painted an old rust bucket. It would be a different story if the games were actually exceptionally rare/valuable, but they aren't. These are just for people to play the games on original equipment, and now he is not seeking to buy one in better condition so it'll be available for someone else ;-)
    (But I must note it should say REPRODUCTION LABEL. I understand it is just for him, and he already knows... but unless he gets burred with it someone else will own it in the future. We can't predict how it may change hands, but best to make sure it's presented as what it is.)

      I think almost any non-polar solvent would work. You could probably use dichloromethane (CH2Cl2), trichloromethane (CHCl3), tetrachloromethane (CCl4) and so on.
      I don't know which plastics are used for those cartridges. It might be ABS.
      I know that polystyrene is problematic. For example, acetone liquifies it. Other plastics such as nylon and LCP (liquid crystal polymer) liquefy on contact with acids.

    I would not recommend you using tape as a protection cover. I've tried that for other uses and it usually results in the tape getting really yellowish and dirty looking after a while. I don't know if it's the tape itself of the adhesive part of it, or it reacts somehow with the paper that you stick it on but yeah, it gets bad.

    • @johnnyvt9

      I prefer to completely restore like he does. However, I always check to see if it will hurt the value of things worth over one hundred dollars. I restored the walnut stock on a gun for my father one year. Even though I didn't hurt the gun and I made it look amazing, it hurt the value. Gun collectors want the original finish always. It never makes sense to me though. You are not changing anything on the gun at all. ALl you are doing is removing the old terrible varnishs used in the past and putting a much protecting polyurethane and it looks amazing when done right.
