There's also one hammer not listed: tack hammer. It's good for carpentry, specifically working with tacks and brads, as it has a narrow head on either side and a tapering hole on either side of the head for tack/brad removal. If you've ever tried to nail in a tack/brad, you know that it's about precision and accuracy and you don't want to bend the nail's shaft irreversibly. Something like a framing hammer would obviously be the wrong choice as if you miss, you damage the wood! Also, choke up on the shaft of the hammer: you conserve power in that you don't tire yourself out in swinging, you become more accurate in hitting the nail's head, and you don't accidentally split the wood.
Do everything with the biggest framing hammer you can find. Need to fix the television? Framing hammer. Planting tomatoes this year? Framing hammer. Constipation? Framing hammer.
ole Blue my 40 year old Estwing 16 oz straight claw never ever let me down after 30 years on construction sites doing everything from building house - concrete form work - installing trim and many other things . He didn't lie when he said to learn how to swing a hammer correctly . Wood handled hammers should not be used to pull nails - use a cats paw
I searched everywhere but can't find a hammer with the feature to remove fully embedded screws. It's the one shown at 3:00. Any idea where I can buy that?
takla3210 Yes, it is probably a Douglas framing hammer. They went out of business but someone has started making them again. Do a google search. You can get them in small quantities now I think...
With its patented deep "V" head design, this Vaughan Rip Hammer (VW20) provides faster, greater power at the point of impact. The head on this hammer is patented steel, while the Sidewinder Nail Puller gives you extra leverage for removing nails. quick google search douglas hammer had a batch in ‘14
It's an estwing ergonomic hammer. They came out about 15 years ago and I'm not sure if they still make them but I bet you can find one on Amazon or eBay. They have them in different weights with and without milled (waffle) head/face
"Keeping an eye on that nail is important too." You look away at the hammer head and that end of the nail is bent! Ergo, a good quality hammer isn't enough, you have to have a sharp eye too. Glad Tommy and I are on the same page here :D
I like steel hammers theyre almost indestructible. And if one gets bent i can fix it and with the side puller on wooden hammers wity tenons becareful with using that i have broken handles doing that
Does anybody actually put on safety glasses on outside UA-cam when hammering? I have never seen a carpenter putting on safety glasses before they start hammering. I have never heard of anyone getting an eye damaged from hammering either. How often does this happen and what is it that typically flies in their eye then?
En alguna ferretería local, lo más seguro que sean más caros, tal vez en algún mercado o tianguis, ahí estarán usados pero tal vez conozca gente que le pueda ayudar donde es el mejor lugar para conseguir martillos.
i like a hammer that feels good in the hand stanley 2 1/2 lb. engineer’s hammer yellow handle stanley 1 lb. curved claw 35% larger head hammer green handle
Just watched a video on framing hammers and the person making the video recommends any young person to swing a 27 oz. Hammer because it is heavy and will drive nails fast . I feel it's wrong I did that and hurt my arm, I now swing a 20 oz.
You will wear yourself out trying to drive nails with a 16 oz. hammer. Do it for a a day or two, then switch to a 20 oz. or 22 oz. hammer. There will be a noticeable difference.
Where are real hammers on this video? All have round heads which for me are no real hammers. Are hammers with round heads some silly American invention?
Ullimately A round head = not a real hammer? Why not? I live in the states and have both... I feel like I always see square heads in European countries outside of the UK. Is that true?
round read = no real hammer! For driving in a nail close to an inside edge or corner only a square head makes sense. Which idiot had the idea making hammers with round heads?? It is just sill, makes no sense.
Shop class should be mandatory in High School, half of the kids today have no idea what its like to use tools to build or fix something. Good video 👍
Make sure you have the right hamma for the jab
I’m an estwing guy.
24oz straight claw milled face for framing, 16oz straight claw for everything else
You totally nailed it!
Hello sir, I'm with the pun police, please come quietly.
Glad they hammered it out.
I'm learning a lot with these old videos!!! Love it!!! ☺☺☺
Grew up watching this as a kid. Learned so much from these guys.
I use a 20oz Estwing rubber handle straight claw smooth head for everything!
Nice! To make mashed potatoes too?! 🤣

I like this!
Back in my day I used a Stanley 28oz framer all day long and the old timers taught us only 3 hits per nail 1 to set and 2 to drive.
i used to use a 28 0z rigging axe framing and it would send nails in instantly. of course it also wore me out pretty fast
This is the technique I learned and boy do I make everyone else look bad.
Zach The Ripper ...wow you are so freaking amazing! People will tell stories about your hammer skills for thousands of years!
I also use the 3 hit technique and not talking about hammers
the first thing i learn people is to have a steady flow of nails ,so the other hand play a big role to
I prefer a 20oz hammer myself. Great whacking power and a comfortable weight.

I can not believe I just watched a video on how to use a hammer? I like Tommy that much.
the white and blue hammer in the middle where can i buy that one?

Rail road spikes no problem.ever cracks walnuts open to.
Nice video, nice tips, thanks
Seems like you have a few extra's their? Can you send me one or two of them?
20oz eastwing, 13.5" long.
That one is very good, you can do everything, anything bigger is too heavy and if is a wood handle is going to brake very easy so get a metal 20 ozone
+crazy wheel Agreed. I've tried different sizes from 15 oz to 28 oz. In the end, I still chose 20 oz. ;)
How do you determine the size of the hammers?
Maleah Scott head mass
20 oz rules everything! :D :P
Its all about that 30 oz hammer
Just got my Rip Hammer today
Can't wait to rip away.
You've got to know the basics, because not everyone has a nail gun.
I like steel hammers theyre almost indestructible. And if one gets bent i can fix it and with the side puller on wooden hammers wity tenons becareful with using that i have broken handles doing that
Have heard tell that "anything" is a hammer EXCEPT a screwdriver, which is also a chisel.
Every guy should have at least 3 hammers. 1. Finish/Trim hammer. 2. Sledge hammer. 3. General purpose claw hammer.
Does anybody actually put on safety glasses on outside UA-cam when hammering?
I have never seen a carpenter putting on safety glasses before they start hammering.

so fucking rude lel
I do, and I'm pretty sure they've helped keep my eyes safe. Safety's first, brother. We're not made of steel like hammers are.
Your profile pic is a crime.
Sometimes if you swing too hard and skim the side of the nail you can send it flying pretty damn hard

They just feel good!
They should have used Hammer Time.
Notice they both grabbed the $100+ titanium hammers when it came time to drive nails.
Tommy was the only real carpenter on the show.
My thumb liked this video, we are not speaking at the moment.....
Hammer time!
Hammah
I thought when you hit the hammer head you weren't supposed to go over your shoulder but guess we should.

20oz is allright for a chick I guess
Bought a new 20 oz Vaughn for fifty cents at a yard sale.
Nice find!
I didn't know there was a waffle head made for not letting the nails slip
Make sure you buy a HULTAFORS, last hammer you ever need!

Why did I watch, now I have to get a curved claw Hammer.
This is so pitiful, but I guess it is needed nowadays.
Can a roofing hammer be a primary tool of you put padding and grip on the upper section of its fiberglass shaft?
