Scale Model Tips - Testing A Cordless Battery Powered Airbrush With A Portable Air Compressor

  • Here I test a portable cordless airbrush. The handheld compressor is impressive and both that and the airbrush performed well. It charges very quickly and last a long time. Around an hour of airbrushing. You will need to thin your paint well especially acrylics but when thinned properly it will spray anything.

Mate, you're a champion. My demands for model finishes are low and I typically use cheap spray cans. I was wondering if one of these would work for me for the occasional airbrush job because I can't be bothered with all the hassle of compressor, air traps, regulators etc. From all your demos it's pretty clear it would do everything I would want. Thanks for being so clear and thorough and down to earth. You have none of the airbrush/paint elitism I'm used to in the modelling scene.

The button in the base changes the pressure from High to Low. In High it will spray neat Stynylrez. In low it can do fine lines using water based acrylics. I’ve had mine 9 months and made 2 videos on it showing what can be done. You can also attach an Iwata Neo if you add an internal extender for the valve rod or, using the Neat and Handy adaptor, pretty much add any Iwata or Badger airbrush.

If you hold the trigger and press the black button under the compressor it will switch between high and low pressure modes.

Just got a generic Hobby Lobby store brand version of this kind of airbrush, excited to try it. The compressor came charged out of the box and I hit the button and it vibrated and scared me! My only reason to get an airbrush is to use specialized paints like lacquers, special iridescent finishes that only craft paints (or Createx colors) can offer, and I am so glad the battery powered airbrushes are available. It’s a great option for those of us that want to spend less money overall, and able to mix our own colors, as well as use special colors that aren’t available as spray cans, without needing a spray booth and compressor and all that jazz. And I’m inspired to film my final test of it for painting a kit! I got a camera for my 17th birthday, and I really want to use it for video, especially Gundam stuff! Thank for all your vids bro, I’ve made a lot of informed purchases (or not purchases because something wasn’t for me, too expensive for my purposes, or I was just curious about a unique test) and sparked my interest to get painting Gundams again after feeling discouraged with mediocre spray can paint results and the heavily limited color supply.

I have one by another name. Sprayed Alclad II clear Red straight from the bottle. I wouldn't use larger than a #3 needle in the airbrush. I have used this to spray lacquers on small pieces to accent my bicycle. Mine came with a really cheap double action airbrush but works fine. I added a Grex silicone grip to grip the gun better. The gun's button hurt after a bit, the cushion that goes on the button makes it much more comfortable.

  • @marinoholguin
    @marinoholguin 3 роки тому

I own one of this. True, you cannot adjust air volume, but the adjustment knob in the back lets you control paint flow (by blocking the needle back movement), for me, not very experienced, this works great, as it is one less variable to worry about.

I bought this as my first airbrush and I ended up returning it.
This thing is amazing for how small it is. However, the air pressure is weak and it’s hard to get a consistent spray. It also gets pretty hot after 30 mins. My finger tips also hurt because you have to push the trigger down quite hard.
I got a traditional compressor set up and it was so much easier to learn to airbrush with it.
TL;DR: Don’t get this as your main airbrush or your first airbrush.
It’s good for a few touch ups here and there when you need cordless functionality but the performance is not as good as a traditional setup and also hard to learn for beginners.

The button on the bottom is used to adjust pressure. You have high and low. I love mine.

Hi, I have quick question, can I use lotion/gel/cream/paste etc for airbrush rather than water base or do I need to mix with water a little bit to make it liquid-ish? I plan to use it for airbrush car/motorcycle trim parts

I think all paints should be thinned using any airbrush. No matter the paint or brush. Except for pre thinned.

Very nice review ! I loved the video :) Atm amazon has it for 70 euros. For AK 3rd gen acryl. I need 70/30 paint/thinner (or water) ration also ? Since I brush paint my models, I use water to thin my AKs and I haven't ever used thinner but I guess I will need it for this kit. Do you think I can use a cable on it to keep the bottle a bit out of my view ? I wonder if that will drop the pressure ... Do you suggest any better gun to pair with it that will help to do the job better ? Thank you in advance !

ok, watched about halfway through ... seems the main issues are that the airbrush itself isn't very adjustable ... so, would the chargeable compressor work with a better separate airbrush, that has better setting capability?

I paid about 45$ for a cheap airbrush kit from china that has one of those black compressor with a red button that are basically noisier aquarium air pumps. That battery one seems pretty good as well for that price range. The specs on Amazon says 60min run time. If that's accurate and its as light as you say it is then yeah that sounds like a pretty decent kit.

    Sorry total noob here
I picked up one of these and mixed in some of those acrylic craft paints
Came out a bit splattery* I guess that’s not a word lol
Anyways so I ran out of battery
Do I need to remove the cup with all the paint in it and wash everything while I’m charging the unit ?
    Thanks !

How much are they though? Because I can get a decent compressor with an airbrush included (I dont know how good these are but there are several different choices and maybe there is one that is alright to use) For just under $110 AUD .. Just depends how much value you get out of using this, maybe you are in a shared living or strict apartment living and a compressor is out of the question.

What size nozzle does it have, a .3mm. If so it acrylic probably needs a little thinning. But over all it looks pretty good for what it does.......

Will that compressor work with that "cheap" Harbor Freight airbrush you bought for $10 and tested in January? I like that airbrush with bottles better than the one in this video with its tiny paint pot.

@@Flip5ide thank you very much, I will do, I eventually got it and it only controls the paint not the air, I suspect it's more important then. Only downside is it seems the compressor doesn't stop itself with no method of doing so, will need to just manually switch off if needed

It works good, I use mine to paint hot wheels, fishing lures and T shirts.
However, I recently bought badger 155 and iwata eclipse. And they are very nice.
Too bad this battery operated one can’t be used on a stand alone compressors. Because I would have all 3 hooked up to mine.
