In 1973 I was a painters assistant for the West Australian Government Railways in Forrestfield. All of the lettering stencils on the WAGR containers was done by painters assistants. I remember days at that task.

what is the age of your works vans? back in the 1880's, after the introduction of the longer bogie passenger cars, the vr recycled its old 2 and 3 axle passenger cars to all and sundry other purposes especially works sleeper and smoko vans. in fact there was one at the rail yard near where i grew up. is that the origin of these wagons? nice paint job.

As far as I can tell there was 3 distinct designs of sleepers, one purpose built and two adapted from old passenger stock frames and 381w would be one of the purpose built ones.

@@TheDemocrab , i saw a welded chassis when it was getting numbers painted on it. what about the others in the video? a while ago i found a site where there were lots of the old cars turned into chook houses, sheds and holiday homes. i think it was called the vincent collection. and a few years ago one turned up in ballarat and another in castlemaine. one of them went to lake goldsmith where theyve got the old machinery.
