Ive always felt the flame staff was underrated since i started playing with it when i started playing the game during the talent tree rework. then they updated it to allow blaze away and since I think its been genuinely a top 3 weapon in the game since. once i got some decent practice in with it I was like 100k damage above anyone else in the lobby 9/10 games
An interesting thing I noticed is that if a rager targets your teammates your primary attacks stagger works differently than if they were to target you. The rager wont be "knocked back" but be slowed like they just tumbled a little while running
I always had fun running this staff but I always felt ineffective but then I saw your vid on E’s psyker “meta” review and I realized my psyker builds shit. Now with this trio of vids it’s gonna be nice welcoming back my warp thrower
Just gotta say, your advice has been great. Only just started doing damnation missions last week, now I'm running Havoc 20+ to help people on their assignments and got the cool black Mobian armor. Something I never thought I'd get when I saw it teased, especially because I would only sit in Malice difficulty missions 90% of the time I played, still dying to rager spam. Cheers dude.
I used it last year and was very surprised at both the range and the stagger. Coming from vermintide 2 where I had to spec a foot knight with all the stagger buffs to interrupt a rager (plague monk) mid combo, here I can just left click and stagger the whole room lmao. At that time surge and voidblast were what I saw recommended, granted surge had a weird bug with the guarantee crit talent, but i didn't really see purge psykers in my games. Also, I tried it with run'n'gun and it's really funny to just run around and stagger everyone
MY MAN keep uploading, I fully learnt your havoc tips and got 40 last Sunday WITH RANDOMS, super happy! And yeah, purg staff is the strongest weapon in the game for sure, I often got the highest dmg in auric malestrom pugs like 8.5 out of 10 times, 700k-1000k+ depending on session time, newbies just don't understand that if you play aggressively with a purg build theres a big reward and return.
Thank you again Tanner for the perfectly timed video, had been sitting on my hands with my level 5 psyker wondering how to make a good staff build so this is amazing
Oh, I get why I love this staff so much now (the myself of the past thought it was a subpar weapon at first, but I kept playing it because I loved that psychic flamethrower concept, and now that I have maxxed it out, I love it sooo damn even more).
It probably _was_ a subpar weapon. There's a lot of things in this game that don't get the chance to shine until you're playing higher difficulties. Purgatus is one of them.
Dude. You’re my spirit animal. I’ve been getting my head kicked in for years now by trauma voidstrike andys. But I held strong and have been torching heretics from the jump. Yeah it doesn’t 1 shot a crusher but who cares? On the non auric difficulties the trauma and voidstrike andys outperform me, but ramp up the difficulty and get larger hordes filled with harder targets and the EMPEROR’S TORCH leaves them in the dust! It’s the only staff that gets BETTER the worst the situation is. More targets = more incinerations. Harder targets = more stacks. More stacks = MORE STACKS 🔥😱🔥
Great video Tanner, however, this fails to properly illustrate why Up: A Pixar animation, is a terrible movie. Please do Up: A Pixar animation next, thank you.
I'm an Inferno/Purge fan. I have been saying this stuff all the time to people. Like why use Smite when you have an Inferno that does the damage AND the CC for example. Also I have been saying for ages that the Inferno CC is better than trauma, as you don't keep ragdolling mobs off other people's aim. Happy that this stuff is being pointed out. And also the term "6 stacks OVER CAP" has been used, which makes me happy, as a lot of people think anything that applies soulblaze adds stacks to anything else and that's not how it works.
I have been running this build since the talent rework lol. Funny that people thought it was trash for so long. Just a note on the bulwarks though, this is incorrect. While wiggling to the side like you have or aiming at the feet will allow flames to creep through the shield itself does block purg staff.
I love how excited you get when you talk about these mechanics. It really mirrors my own giddy obsession with complex systems in games. The purge staff has been my favorite since day one. A love that has only deepened when I discovered this build on my own and then optimized it from watching these types of videos and doing my own experiments. Playing different builds feels like playing without legs and I'm not even talking about how op this is, just how much I love the playstyle.
Even without optimizing the damages of this staff i can be a permanant wall of fire in AM, stopping every hordes, killing half of the specials. It is a great staff.
this is the only staff i've used on psyker since the launch of the game basically and it's wild how little i see it outside myself. like yeah you don't have range with it but ok assails and brain burst exist. also people are right about psyker being squishy, but only if you're trying to go like a full force greatsword build where you basically don't get to use peril outside of scriers gaze, but that's a single build
This is a magnificent deep dive into, what I call the DeathFog Staff of Doom. I ran it in game and it's everything Mr. Lindberg demonstrated it was. However, it's a bit clunky for me to use, as I'm older and can't react physically to the movements on the keyboard as needed. But if your a young gamer who plays a psyker, this SHOULD be in your repertoire. Nice job again, T!
i've been an uncanny strike + DoT nerd for a while now even when Tanner would yell at me about uncanny strike, definitely feel like havoc has increased my fun 10fold on the game and made that set up / combo so much better
To put it even more into perspective if you dont play the class much and stick to zealot, imagine using a flamer with absolutely none of the drawbacks and a fraction kf the downtime between reloads. Yeah
The single most ridiculous thing about it is the m1 on command stagger and proc range invincibility. You literally cannot be killed being mobile with this staff unless your caught dead out in the open by yourself. Even though DS is obvious pick I always roll deimos with this because you only need uncanny, get KD on ogryns in H2 and you can just slap deflector and be further invincible to even the prospect of the frames between slides since you're rarely melee'ing anyway. You have to monumentally fuckup to die with this staff.
only thing you have to watchout for with this purgatus is how soulfire ownership works. One guy just running shriek hitting soulfire first will take ownership of all subsequent soulfire stacks w/r/t modifiers iirc
I use the Deimos as well. For try-hard meta the dueling sword + uncanny is best, but I got tired of try-harding with the uncanny stacks and use the Deimos for Deflector since I like having mega block and enjoy the unique playstyle and abilities/moveset of the force sword.
good info as always. yeah, that stick is crazy strong. i don't like to use it though for one reason: its graphics effects are obnoxious. less for the psyker, but the other players. i struggle to see anything in that sea of blue from flames, soulblaze and shield. night missions with this are atrocious, even with modded graphics. hence i prefer electro and gun psyker in maelstrom, but i can't dodge it in havoc. it would be so nice to have a thin beam that only blooms into flames on impact instead of these constant blue puffs in your face.
This staff has been busted OP just for the insane stagger CC that left click has since launch. The soul blaze was nothing impressive till they nerfed Flame DoT's fallowed with a buff and separation of Soulblaze from flame DoT damage. Than this staff was truly OP but most people are bad at the psyker class, good psykers have known of this and got bored with how one note it was till the class skill tree came. also a FUN combo on the psyker is the Force swords uncanny strike applies on the push attack which has a 9m range to it, you can safely apply the soulblaze and than debuff/stagger a crusher hoard from range. Ryken has detailed how OP the class and this staff has been for quite a while. I look forward to see if you have any extra details. It with the cooldown shriek let's you use brain burst on a number of gunners if they are out of range of the burn.
Just to note: Mettle only procs on purgastaff RMB crits once per enemy and charge. If you keep using the charged fire on a single enemy expecting the crits to give back all your toughness it won't. You have to spam primary fire. Trauma also has similar problems. Perfect Timing and Empathic Evasion work fine with the charge attack. If you're doing multiple short charge attacks into a horde with lower crit chance (also maintaining blaze away), then mettle will do it's job. When the clump of enemies start thinning and leaving behind elites you're going to want to start spamming M1 for the stagger anyway.
I fell in love with the Purg staff so hard. Also I know it’s not optimal but I love Run n Gun on it to let you get close while keeping enemies stunlocked
What people mean by psyker being squishy is for situations like being caught by a crusher overhead alone, other classes can survive that, but thats a skill issue. It's pretty hilarious how much tough ess regen we have though, we can outpace the toughness a mutant damages if it grabs us
I remember when blaze force swords had infinite dodge. And dotnl made a video soloing 100 daemonhosts with the purge staff. What's crazy is that 100 more daemonhosts wouldn't of made a difference.
Mettle is currently bugged for purg (or staffs in general?) It only proccs ones per "wave" or doesnt procc at all. There is a bug report on the FS forum.
Like idk it proccs PER CRIT on guns but how can't it procc per crit on purg. For the time being I wouldn't skill mettle quietitude is good enough for now.
Question, how does blaze away apply to a staff? What would be considered the magazine of the staff? Is it the secondary attack charge-up meter or the % peril?
it really is a hit weapon. its way better than the flamethrower due to no ammo or no long reload. only problem is youre relying on bb or shards to reach out for long range fighting, but if youve assembled a good team theres hopefully a vet or two mowing down things that are far out
I know it’s entirely unrelated but could you do an overview of Ogryn his best weapons abilities skill tree. I know he’s not really your cup of tea but you’re the only creator who seems to understand the hidden code behind all the interactions in this game.
Another thing is that it pairs perfectly with the best melee weapon and BB the purgs staffs only weaknesses are short range and suboptimal single large targets with are covers by your blitz and melee
I love running this with the upgrade to brain burst that makes it spammable, since you're constantly casting venting shriek anyway and there are several perks like perilous combustion and wildfire that sound strong, but make little difference when it matters.
Yeah the Purge staff from my experience has been all around one of the best hoard clear weapons in the game, although the only thing it falters against is if you have way too many gunners constantly trying to poke you from different angles or from long distances away. Like for example at the end of Carnival if there's gunners at the other side of the damn arena shooting from above and below, especially after the buffs gunners have received from the new update. I guess I just need to get better at trying to take advantage of cover but it's been consistently difficult for me especially with my purg bubble psyker in havoc, been trying to get past 30 with pre-mades of people I pull in with the party finder just for us to domino over multiple times because of the spawn rates of gunners being cranked up to 11 along with their buffs and the EFL(2) debuff also buffing their fire rate. The bubble just pops in like three seconds of gunfire now it's insane, I am kinda questioning if bubble is even viable in Havoc at this point and maybe I should use venting shriek.
Just found this channel last night from your video refutation on Mr. E, thanks for the great darktide content. Was curious about your thoughts on voidstrike/trauma current state. Compared to purge, they seem a little lacking, especially trauma. EDIT: after playing with trauma more, I realized what I was doing wrong, I get it now. Still curious about your thoughts on voidstrike though.
This stuff has been my most used weapon for most of the games lifetime. People really slept on this staff in favour of stuff like smite. This has all the CC of smite but also, just kills things. Personally, i like having the 10% brainburst chance instead of 6 warp charges, but its probably worse, since you have a 10% chance of exploding a poxburster instead pf pushing it with m1.
FINALLY! My fav staff and build i main since i started in oct. I have carried so many matches with this staff and build. One full charge and everything dies. You can actually spam the basic attack much much faster by hitting reload key right after the animation. Throwing them out so fast you can stagger/ kill crushers and anything with just the basic attacks because the add stacks just like a charged attack. I also recommend taking the skill for a 10% chance to proc brain burst when under critical peril is a must because you will constatly be one shot enemies with it. You will be killing everything quicker than anyone on your team. Shit hes right it feels like cheating thats how good this staff is.
I honestly think the brainburst passive 10% to proc is one of the worst talents due to the cooldown. 15s in between procs on a single random enemy just isn't worth a talent point especially if it means that you have to give up other really strong talents like kinetic deflection, warp rider, wildfire, or psykinetic's aura.
that staf have incredible damage, penetration againts many targets, good cc and highly spameable the only bad thing it have is that have no long range alternative for deal with enemies that are much far away
@@dr.cheeze5382 There aren't any """meta""" builds with Wildfire in the first place, friend. Perilous Combustion is for the 'at least one stack on an enemy to trigger talent synergies" but the proc radius is, I believe, only 4 meters around a target, I agree.
i use scrier gaze. i may not have as much CC and it makes this arguably less versatile, but at this point we're more talking about "what flavor of lightsaber" rather than "what kind of playstile", really.
Voidstrike staff is also pretty good, I personally like it more because you can cover a broader range and with the right blessing you can make use of soulblaze too (+ upgraded brain rapture and wildfire)
This is a s7per cool video and definitely being put in a psyket playlist. Only wish i could get to see this being put into action to learn how you use it in actual missions.
You know, I was just thinking about wanting an inferno staff build but I didn’t understand the weapon well enough to feel confident making something effective. Problem solved, let’s burn shit.
I'd recommend not taking the fire perks (perilous combustion and wildfire) as they aren't very strong when it matters. I personally use the upgrade to brainburst that makes it trigger faster and cost less (not that peril cost matters with this build) since you're weakest when dealing with gunners or ogryns in small spaces.
It’s a great weapon when you have a massive arena and never get backed into a wall. Show me doing that inside of a cramped hallway with lots of corners to get stuck in and I’ll consider it over the void sphere staff
there is no better weapon then unlimited crowd control. if it can't attack. it can't kill you. also this has nothing to do with darktide but, i wish the fire staff from Sena in Vermintide or Bardins Drakegun could do this stuff xD
The blue flames are the only built in "perk" wich makes me avoid the staff when I use the psy. I can't see the enemies well when they are burning and I end up flailing around my melee weap when using other classes. That fact makes me avoid the purge staff so I don't inflict it on other players.
Would be interested in hearing your thoughts on the lowest powered weapons, how to build them currently and what you would change to bring it up to par
I think they should buff the new greatswords on the psyker and other underused melee weapons because right now the duelling sword is rly the only melee worth using
Ty, I've been telling people to dump trauma staff and use anything else. Firestick gets better with more bodies on the field. Voidstrike is trauma but easier to aim. Electro staff is a crit machine with L and emergency cc with R. There is no reason to really use trauma as the aim is so awkward and it doesn't serve much of a niche.
@@mightystu49 good doesn't mean its design I flawed. It actively moves targets out of the way and gimps your allies as you knock stuff out of their attack.
I made this build without looking anything up like 2 weeks ago and i have had so much fun with it. Since you pointed s few things out i am really desperate they dont nerf it. They should buff other classes :D
Agreed, I've loved this build since launch (well as much as a build like this existed at launch, I liked the staff is my point) and really hope they don't nerf it too much.
I have one question though: What to do about Crushers when you don't have a combat stimm and have warp nexus instead of Penetrating Flame? Do you just use your duelling sword then or am I missing something here?
I love this build and i can see its auric viable but im not wuite sure on havoc for it? Gunners are so strong and right now bubble and wall seem to be the only eau to deal with them consistently and quickly?
I might have missed it in the video, looking to clarify how soulblaze works with crit. A: Each tick rolls for crit individually regardless of the initial hit critting B: Only if the first hit that applies SB crits then each tick will roll for crit
Blaze away was just overkill on this now, been running it since launch and with BA being strength instead of just damage means that a horde will get suppressed just from being near your stream. I'd say Deimos is better than DS on psyker, you get the same blessings, can move faster with side dodges, and can kill most things with your 2nd heavy empowered or not. it will knock a crusher or lighter on its ass in a simple light heavy loop. Would like to add that the +3SB on special kill also goes above the cap.
Fun fact: Purge staff crits apply 2 warpfire stacks instead of 1. Which is laughable considering how often this staff crits.
That's why u run nexus on it. When u crit at 14 stacks u can exceed the stack limit of 15 and reach 16 stacks of soulblaze.

If enemy dies with Soulblaze, ALL psyker with this node rolls 10% chance. if 1 of them got proc, all psykers with this node get warp charge. Effectivly, walking warp battery :)
Oh yeah, that's true... This literally becomes even more exponentially overpowered if every psyker on the team is running a similar build.
Biggest enemy, a corner
Not for Shriek. lol
Ive been a purg main since the day I found my purg staff. Purg mains rise up!
Loved the staff immediately mainly because I didn't know how to play defense. lol.
@@J.B.1982iv never been good with assail or playing psyker in melee so I usually play purgatus but I like surge and trauma too.
It’s been ridiculously good for awhile. Adding blaze away was just the icing on the cake. Crazy more people haven’t been using
Just gotta say, your advice has been great.
There is a reason dt is so much easier than vermintide
@@g0rli622 I'd say the main reason is the toughness vs temp hp and maybe the grenades so everyone has an "oh shit" button
Thanks so much for talking about this staff!! Getting back into Psyker and been loving this staff
This build really only takes of when you gain access to in fire reborn, although I guess that applies to all lvl 30 builds...
I wish I was as passionate about anything as this guy is about telling people they're playing psyker wrong lol
I've had newbies tell me its useless and don't shoot it at carapace armored enemies lmao. How clueless they are
Voidstrike is the worst out of the psyker staves.....
Great video Tanner, however, this fails to properly illustrate why Up: A Pixar animation, is a terrible movie. Please do Up: A Pixar animation next, thank you.
Im glad a content creator is talking about this, ive been trying to get people on the purg for months now.
Purge staff my beloved
Was waiting for this video, this staff with psyker passives is insane synergy
Ah famished flame battle wizard, you live on in darktide.
Watching this video as Tanner slowly build the build I've been running for over a year made an absolutely evil grin grow on my face
Vindication ~!!
I've never been good at making a baller build but I've always loved using this staff.
I started using the Inferno staff a few days ago and I saw how goated it it
Staggering even Maulers with such ease is crazy
this is the only staff i've used on psyker since the launch of the game basically and it's wild how little i see it outside myself. like yeah you don't have range with it but ok assails and brain burst exist. also people are right about psyker being squishy, but only if you're trying to go like a full force greatsword build where you basically don't get to use peril outside of scriers gaze, but that's a single build
Shhhh Tanner pls don’t suggest that my beloved flame staff be nerfed 🤫
Sup nerd
@@Steeltoes_94 being bullied in UA-cam comments as always smh
it really is a hit weapon. its way better than the flamethrower due to no ammo or no long reload. only problem is youre relying on bb or shards to reach out for long range fighting, but if youve assembled a good team theres hopefully a vet or two mowing down things that are far out
I know it’s entirely unrelated but could you do an overview of Ogryn his best weapons abilities skill tree.
A breakdown of soulblaze is nice. Also, finally a weapon I like is actually good.
God dude, you already changed my mind on my favorite staff 😂. I was favoring Force Strike, now I wanna max this staff out
Yeah the Purge staff from my experience has been all around one of the best hoard clear weapons in the game, although the only thing it falters against is if you have way too many gunners constantly trying to poke you from different angles or from long distances away.
Watch part 2 I talk about how it's easy to best gunners with it
Shhhhhhhh
Don't make them take away our wonderful flammenwerfer
Just found this channel last night from your video refutation on Mr. E, thanks for the great darktide content. Was curious about your thoughts on voidstrike/trauma current state. Compared to purge, they seem a little lacking, especially trauma.
EDIT: after playing with trauma more, I realized what I was doing wrong, I get it now. Still curious about your thoughts on voidstrike though.
Before Havoc, Inferno would be one of my last choices. But right now it's easily the best staff.
I DIDNT KNOW THE SHRIEK STACKED OVER THE LIMIT!
I now know i have my staff and i must scream
THANK you
This stuff has been my most used weapon for most of the games lifetime.
Yeah, I stopped using that staff for a while. Feels like "press X to win" gameplay
Shit hes right it feels like cheating thats how good this staff is.
brainburst passive can kill your team because it can proc while shoving away poxbursters and it also has a cooldown
@yee2631 i thought the cd was way lower youre right i just looked. Thank you
@@vahnayasaki6989i will try and use something different i didn't take thiz into account i appreciate it
I've been maining purgatus for months and it's ridiculous what you can do with it. Love that thing. Great video Tanner 🤍
This is validation for my warpflame build I didn't know I'd get today
that staf have incredible damage, penetration againts many targets, good cc and highly spameable
the only bad thing it have is that have no long range alternative for deal with enemies that are much far away
I prefer to take one point from Warp Expenditure (2,5% TGH on PRL GEN) and put it into Critical Chance Boost minor node under Scrier's Gaze.
I suppose that works, but I would sooner remove wildfire or perilous combustion.
@@dr.cheeze5382 There aren't any """meta""" builds with Wildfire in the first place, friend. Perilous Combustion is for the 'at least one stack on an enemy to trigger talent synergies" but the proc radius is, I believe, only 4 meters around a target, I agree.
@@Rageberge I am well aware. That is why I worded my comment so carefully.
“Psyker with fire staff OP” me who just started the game as a psyker: “and is that supposed to be a bad thing?”
i use scrier gaze. i may not have as much CC and it makes this arguably less versatile, but at this point we're more talking about "what flavor of lightsaber" rather than "what kind of playstile", really.
Voidstrike staff is also pretty good, I personally like it more because you can cover a broader range and with the right blessing you can make use of soulblaze too (+ upgraded brain rapture and wildfire)
blaze away even carries over to the next charged puff if you do it fast its pretty nuts
Everything you said was correct however, the randoms not cleaning ranged enemies keep me from running this. Perhaps it is an issue of skill...
oh boy wai ttill tomorrows video haha this is not an issue at all
Tanner finn'in to get Psyker deleted from the game with Dueling Sword showcasing, cooldown aura value and now Pur-GOAT-us staff.
This is a s7per cool video and definitely being put in a psyket playlist.
Only wish i could get to see this being put into action to learn how you use it in actual missions.
I love the fire builds. Struggle with sniper modifiers though - or I do with this build anyway.
Purg staff was always my favorite Psyker weapon if only there was a way to switch the primary fire lol then it would be absolute perfection.
Another piece of absolute cinema by tanner
damn. people drawing attention to it like this might draw the wrath of the nerf hammer. shame, it was my favourite staff :D
It's still good and is fun to use. None of the staves are bad or unusable and it's boring using the same weapon every mission.
@@mightystu49 good doesn't mean its design I flawed. It actively moves targets out of the way and gimps your allies as you knock stuff out of their attack.
Meme for generating more peril sincd you cant keep up with venting shriek, blaze greatsword activation gives like 40-60% peril
Oh and switching of the sword and back to it resets the empower, you don't even have to wait for the animation to finish, so you can give your self
Sends me back to the days of using the flamethrower staff on Vermintide 2
I made this build without looking anything up like 2 weeks ago and i have had so much fun with it. Since you pointed s few things out i am really desperate they dont nerf it. They should buff other classes :D
Agreed, I've loved this build since launch (well as much as a build like this existed at launch, I liked the staff is my point) and really hope they don't nerf it too much.
I have one question though: What to do about Crushers when you don't have a combat stimm and have warp nexus instead of Penetrating Flame? Do you just use your duelling sword then or am I missing something here?
My Beloved, I was blind, but now i can see the true! TRUE POWER! WORSHIP ME!
I love this build and i can see its auric viable but im not wuite sure on havoc for it? Gunners are so strong and right now bubble and wall seem to be the only eau to deal with them consistently and quickly?
This staff has had more impact in the game than Havok (Dead in a week) mode has had.
I might have missed it in the video, looking to clarify how soulblaze works with crit.
A: Each tick rolls for crit individually regardless of the initial hit critting
B: Only if the first hit that applies SB crits then each tick will roll for crit
silly billy is a peak insult, keep spreadin the good news 👍
Blaze away was just overkill on this now, been running it since launch and with BA being strength instead of just damage means that a horde will get suppressed just from being near your stream.
I'd say Deimos is better than DS on psyker, you get the same blessings, can move faster with side dodges, and can kill most things with your 2nd heavy empowered or not. it will knock a crusher or lighter on its ass in a simple light heavy loop.
Would like to add that the +3SB on special kill also goes above the cap.
