I hope all is well on the ETR! I just recently got together with a group of volunteers to clear & rebuild a 7 mile railroad near where I live. It has been privately owned since the 90s, but nothing has ran down the tracks in the past 10-15 years! The owners got the word out and several people have volunteered, bringing many talents to the table.
Saturday we had our first work day, one guy brought a lawnmower that he had modified to cut heavy brush. The 4 of us cleared almost 1/2 mile of track in just over 2 hours! It wasn't as dense as what you guys fought, but it had some spots that you couldn't walk through. We're expecting to have the line cleared from end to end by the end of spring, and we will be sure to spray it before letting a track crew come in and install new ties & ballast. I'm going to try to make some videos of the work, but I'm sure you know that its not very easy to film and work productively. Anyways, good luck to the ETR and I can't wait to see what the future holds for it.

Im 17 and have a dream of bringing back the sole locomotive that a railway near where i live used during the early 20th century, currently its 300 miles away in kentucky. Seeing you rehabilitate this section of railroad (and eventually the whole thing) gives me a lot of hope. Keep up the amazing work and videos. Cheers from Toledo!

They cut down a big ass tree in the middle of a turnout. It would all have to be rebuilt for millions of dollars to run anything more than speeders there, but it appears that’s what he wants to use it for. It’s just a quarter mile spur for a previously rail served industrial park.

I would think you'd need to run a ballast regulator with a broom over everything. Once the brush was cleared it wouldn't take too long to run over the entire length of your track with a broom to clear everything off. Just a thought. I think digging up all the old spurs and switches is just downright awesome! Congratulations, I envy you!

Exciting to see the amaizing progress you'll have made. I take it there is lots of potential for customers . Its amaizing how many short line railroads stay afloat and in business even with just a a regional railroad that obviously interchanges with the class ones! You talk about storage. That can generate lots of revenue lol.

I know this video was a year ago and anything I say is moot. A forestry head for the miniX and a track loader, even rented would have done the job so much faster and less cost when man hours are counted. Then there wouldn't be anything to haul away either, just mulch for the right of way. I am looking forward to seeing the rest of this series, can I wish you a bleated good luck :P

Don't use gauge rods to hold gauge, yes gauge rods works but you're better off stuffing new ties, we rebuilt a section of a lead track into an industry track and removed most of the gauge rods and stuffed new common yard ties and switch ties, them gauge rods will move laterally over time, gauge rods isn't a permanent solution to holding gauge, the most critical location to stuff new ties would be at the joints, it will hold the joints up and help eliminate the bars from breaking and hold gauge.

Trains running over the rails has a tendency to spread them, especially on curves. These will have spread because of vegetation growing up and pushing things around; I'd guess that would be more likely to be outside the rails, pushing them together.

not all railroads are truly abandon. very few are actually abandon. Might show on a map it is abandon. but Railroad companies do have the rights to start using the tracks again later on, if there is a need for it. There was a section of railroad track nearby where i am, Hasnt been used in over 60+ years. this year, railroad workers where clearing the tracks, adding missing tracks and replacing railroad ties. Their plan is by summer of 2021 to have the track up and running.
There is thousands of miles of tracks out there, that may be considered abandon according to some people. but, arent actually abandon. could be 100 year old tracks out there that havent been used since then. railroad companies still have the rights to them. and Can use them again some day.

Can you sell or convert and use any of the lumber you have cut, that would supplement funds, or simply control burn to clear some out of the way to give you leeway to move about a bit. I know that on modern usable tracks when working on repairs you need all the room you've got plus some, so to be constantly tripping over trees, logs and general strewn weeds must be some awful working conditions.

Very cool to see an old rail line being resurrected. Looks like you guys have a lot of work to do still before a locomotive and some cars can travel that section. How old is that line?

I think the line was put in around 1975. And was used by a beer can Company.

I'm curious. You purchased the tracks, does that include the right of way as well? And on that line of thought, had there been any spills along those lines in the history of that line? Are you going to be held responsible for cleaning any spills? Financially or otherwise?
