  • This webinar showcases experimental results from research conducted on a commercial farm in Tasmania, where cattle were allowed ad libitum (free) access to feed-grade biochar. The webinar outlines results measured for liveweight gains, manure carbon and soil organic carbon, enteric methane emissions and cost-benefit modelling. The webinar covers consumer and farmer perceptions associated with feeding biochar to ruminant livestock, including skills required and barriers to adoption, as well as implications for animal and soil health, environmental stewardship, regenerative agriculture, greenhouse gas emissions and farm ecosystems. Effects of biochar on soil carbon (mineralization and stabilization), methane produced from livestock fermentation (enteric methane) and implications associated with varying liveweight gains, soil carbon enrichment, biochar cost and carbon prices (assuming avoided greenhouse gas emissions were monetized) are explored by way of scenario analysis. The webinar includes discussion of wider aspects associated with feeding biochar and is followed by interactive discussion with participants. Further details of this work, and other systems analysis using biochar, are provided in the papers below.
