Its just like a copper john used in fly fishing. It resembles an emerging midge pupa or really alot of different emerging insect pupa. Also if you add peacock hearl to the head it works a little better but is not needed.
Im having one hell of a time trying to get something to bite here in washington state.. Its whitefish season on the Yakima River, and sadly im a horrible fly fisherman. Im going to give this a try

This lure works just as well for ice fishing as it does in open water.
What size of a hook should I use
We fished mostly clear water so I can not say for sure about silty water.
