- In this video I review the art books that helped me most in the beginning of my art journey! Then I go over my highschool traditional artworks that challenged me to become the artist I am today.
It kinda sucks that I have lost many of the oldest pieces that I have done, but it was great and heartwarming to see that I was much better than I thought I was back then!
I encourage you to let me know what you think about my work in comparison to now, and to take a look back on your progress to get some encouragement!

I'm so glad you aren't ashamed of your early artwork. I think my embarrassment over my art has held me back a lot :(

Sophia Neilsson honestly I find looking at my old work as a source of inspiration and determination rather than being ashamed of it. When I quit drawing for 6 years i almost threw them away but something told me to keep them and when I was showing my husband my cruddy art it actually inspired me to start drawing again and dive into an art degree :)
I nearly threw something away tonight, I hated it so much. Ugh. So so much. I'm at that spot where I was getting better and I tried a new thing and it looked like something I did as a child, except much worse. Ugh. My husband told me to keep it. I could draw a stickman and he'd like it.

kairinaminemix it's true!😂😂 Back when I started to take my art seriously I jumped right into manga
I didn't start off drawing manga, mainly because I started drawing and being interested in art at such an early age. I started off drawing cartoons like Looney Toons I even had a book similar to the manga ones and Hello Kitty, characters like that. Then I started to draw manga and anime characters but not for long because I was super bored personally by that art style. I got really excited when I started learning about realism and 3D. Then unfortunately I lost interest in art and changed my mind completely due to a couple bad teachers and family members. I was set for the next 5ish years thinking I was going to pursue the medical field. Then, one day I realized this wasn't me being true to myself and it wasn't going to make me truly happy and fulfilled as a person, so now I'm digging back into that childhood passion of mine at the age of 20. Wish me luck on my journey!

I did over 20 years ago, because my art teacher was super into anime and I wanted to impress him 😂 (I was 5 to 10 years old)
Now my 8 yr old daughter is drawing the same. It's super exciting to see.
Even if I'm not into manga/anime now at all.

But some have this phase for most of their life and are insanely good at it😊 On the other hand, there are also some artists who are not interested in any cartoon or comic book styles and stick mostly to realistic style.
Every artist who started out with manga has either a Chistopher Hart manga book in their bookcase or a page in their sketchbook of different manga eyes
I love the talking hands show. Self reflecting videos from artist are just as helpful to me as ones instructing technique.

Seeing your progress makes me sad that I didn’t stick to drawing cartoons although I was pretty good at it. I also quit writing and photography lol. Depression is a b*tch. But I’m looking forward to getting back to things I love :)

It's all a one-day-at-a-time thing sometimes, just do something today and don't feel discouraged if tomorrow you don't do it, otherwise you'll stop altogether. I hope you are feeling better nowadays 😊

There was definitely a time when I'd see someone's difference in skill from when they were young, to when they were older, and it would make me feel terrible about my own art. But As I'm getting older (not that I'm very old) I'm realizing that art is a skill that just needs practice and cultivation. Now I love seeing these journies of great artists because it shows that everyone starts in the same place. No skill at all, only motivation and passion. No one is good at drawing until they decide that they want it, and love it, and decide to pursue the objective of improving. I just love how you showed your early artwork without shame because it pushes that point :))
Your impression of Arnold Schwarzenegger's accent was the highlight of my day.
The smart kid one actually really rang a bell to me and made me remember how I was, and felt in high school, being labelled the nerd and fairly ignored...
Haha I had books like those too, seeing them is so nostalgic

I'm really interested in art too but I never saw myself as talented. I always wanted to draw good so I started with putting the paper on the pc screen and drawing on it by tracing the art on monitor. Then I used a paper called "copy paper" which helps you to draw any reference. Then I tried drawing the basics without any ingredients and just by using reference. Then I tried drawing all by myself, then learnt how to paint. I improved myself. Maybe not as much but to a good degree in a few years. I can draw with using reference and tracing now but the worst and hardest parts are measures and shadings. So if I try drawing without using any reference, I just can't picture it in mind. However talented people can do it, like you. I hope I can improve myself just like you did. Your videos gave me hope. I like them a lot, hope you can get more viewers through time :)
Edit: it's been a year or so. I can now draw dynamic poses and faces without any reference. I also can draw in different styles rather than sticking to only cartoonish/animetic style. I haven't only improved my art but also my English during this time. Practicing does indeed creates the perfect (:
I think he mostly used references, at one point he said he even printed it off and inked his canvas with the printed version from photoshop. I feel like most good artists use a lot of references for realism. Sometimes I wonder if some people just trace over a photograph lol, it's hard to tell who is honest and who's not. I've always been very honest and always wanted to create something from my own idea, I am not a fan of copying photos, but it's good for studying though.

those books at the beginning gave me major flashbacks to when i was seven with like three crappy books from the dollar store that taught me how to draw cartoon monsters and cartoonish faces haha although they were just silly book i think they really made an impact on me and influenced my style to this day
I'm just... wow. These last pieces were just so powerful. It was really inspiring and refreshing to see your history/progress. It helped me realise that I need to try something new!

I love seeing your progress! It's refreshing to know that not all artists start off drawing so professionally and that it takes a lot of tribulation before someone has their techniques and style set it stone

Too bad I ripped out pages, colored over, or threw out my sketchbooks out of rage years ago. I feel horrible. So many years down the drain, because I kept comparing myself to others. Would love to have those now. I think about it so often. I wish I never made an Instagram. I was too weak.
@@hectttic5930 Never compare yourself to other's, compare you to you. Be in competition with yourself and you will improve with each work you do. I've drawn since I could hold a pencil and been a painter for about 18years and I just compare me to me otherwise I would be disappointed it would not help my work. Use others to learn from and to help you, comparing will do nothing for you.
same here! Although I never really threw out my old work, I lost the ones from young childhood, and after that my parents didn't want to buy me art supplies such as paint/pastels and pencils (late 90's early 00s) so I went digital right away. MS paint at first, then corel and photoshop, I saved up $125 for a corel paint shop pro program lol at 15. So I still have all those drawings on photobucket still saved, and I have this folder from 2006 called Adobe files, and a lot of my old art work is there, I've always saved it on a disc or a usb and re-uploaded it to my new computers. I used to stop finishing stuff because I would compare myself with others too much, deviant art killed me...I felt hopeless and gave up, I can't imagine what I'd do if pinterest and instagram was also there back then, I'd feel worse esp at that fragile age and time period (I have severe depression). I bought a wacom tablet once but then I sold it because I was totally broke, then I got into traditional stuff like clay and painting...I've actually never attempted realism before! I don't know if I should :/ I've always liked doing just illustrations and cartoons.

Honestly, it is really refreshing to see someone who stepped back from the art scene and got back into it that is my age. I've tried to get back into it but I developed issues with my hands so I am really reluctant to even try drawing again. I am also going back to college rn and dealing with an international move and moving into my own place so I dont really have the time or energy to art proper.
However, I am really glad I stumbled upon your videos! It's nice to be reminded that art does not have an age or an ability level and that it is a skill that can be learned and relearned! It makes me hopeful!
Hey! I did that too I stepped away from art and it took 6 years to jump back in. There will always be issues to stop you from doing this and that but if you force yourself even five minutes a day to just doodle on paper it tremendously helps even when only your eyes will see. It’s just refreshing to the soul and that’s all that matters :)

Your progress is soooo amazing, it's like from 0 to hero (sorry :) ), I use to draw a lot (a lot, lot) when I was younger and now, after 18 years break, i am staring again. Your channel is very inspiring and useful. Thanks you very much :)
That last picture with the girl that didnt get asked to prom - i recognised the casle immediately :D its castle lichtenstein in germany and its just about 30 minutes aways from my home haha

Portraits seem to be the go to for young artists, mostly artsy guys trying to impress girls but that’s a different topic.
So nice to see the progression, it’s important to look back on where you came from.
Dude, this was so fun to watch! Im 34 now, and this makes me want to reopen my the chest, i keep my old art in. I have pieces, all the way back to my kindergarten days lol! So great, to see an artists progression :)
Also, i have put away my talent, for almost as many years, from childhood to adult. I found procreate 2 weeks ago, and can finally release my artistic energy again! Thanks for the vid!

I started off the exact same way! LITTERALY, the shoujo manga book on the far left was what got me into drawing. SO many childhood memories.

This video really puts into perspective how little I have done to improve my art skills so far. I'm really glad to have sources of motivation and guidance such as your channel and Ethan Becker's channel.
Love how dedicated he was during all those times. I stopped for the longest time. Now I am back trying to catch up and improve 😭

It's not about how good the technique is in your art. It's about the story and style that defines YOU as an artist. It's all about expression and your own identity. Remember this: Technique alone doesn't make the artist. It's story-telling and emotion, it's creating history; your own history. When you find yourself and your style, then it is time to slowly develop TECHNIQUE around your OWN STYLE. Take for example Basquiat, Picasso. Just have fun and have patience.

e r g o j o s h I came out of a 6 year depression haitus and Art youtube is keeping me on task as I hone back up! I am from a pretty small area and never had very many artists to grow with so I’ve never been lenient with my learning process and watching the progression of more prominent artists is so helpful for learning to be a better self teacher and less of a mean self critic! Utada!? Yes! OMG! I had/have a bunch of those "how to draw manga and anime" series, too! I LOVED them (but I had so much to learn, and still do XD)
I’ve been watercolor painting for 2-3 months now and I’m no where near good yet but I’ve kept all of my paintings from start to now and it’s crazy how much I have improved. I’ve also noticed how no matter how many art videos I watch on UA-cam I only improve from actually painting not really from the videos though they are helpful.
I really enjoyed seeing your improvement over all these years and all of the beautiful art pieces you've done, especially how you drew people and what they've been seen as. Like the girl that nobody asked out at 25:00. You've shows huge improvement as you started putting in more details. Also your celebrity pictures improved too, the one issue that others and myself have with portraits is getting details and anatomy aligned up properly. Now i suppose i could do graph, but since i decided to move into digital art it'll be a bit tricky. Anyhow, thanks for sharing, subscribed! Sincerely:

I saw that the book from the beginning of the video was by Christopher Hart and I was like, hmmm that name seems familiar. So I looked at my book shelf and it turns out I also have a ton of Christopher Hart books that are wayyyy better quality. It’s nice to see that he asl improved over time😊

Wow, just wow. I got the exact same art books when I was in school, even tho I live in Germany. What makes me really sad is that I tried to learn drawing like that, but in the end stopped since schools here are horribly conservative. Teachers continued to give me the worst grades cause "this manga stuff is not art", which also got me into trouble with my parents. I tried to do more traditional art but I never felt any connection to stuff like that and after some time completely stopped.
It was last years Inktober challenge that got me back into drawing, and finally being able to draw what I want. I still get sad when thinking about how good I could actually be now if I hadn't stopped back then, but I hope I still can improve a little more, there's so much stuff in my head I want to give a visible form. Drawing a manga would be my biggest dream, no matter if it brings in money or not...

I just got an iPad Pro and Procreate.. I’m a novice to drawing in general. I SUCK. but I really want to learn.. even if it’s just my unique style. Seeing your progress gives me hope
I didn't take my artworks really seriously until I watched endgame. Then I had this huge motivation to draw something as a tribute so I drew thanks and it was very good. Everybody who saw that started praising me and that was when I started taking it seriously instead of a hobby.

i started drawing anime too in highschool and my first characters were based on DBZ and Sailor moon ones, then i played Final Fantasy games and i decided to use that style.
Lol I had 2 out of the 3 how to draw manga books you had 😆 that being said, I think you definitely made more use of it than I did
