For those interested, the Catcher in the Rye is basicly the mother of all misfit novels, giving them a voice. It's playing in 1949, so everything controversial in it has already been adopted, reinterpreterted and made mainstream by our time. The best example is the protagonist wearing his baseball cap backwards - a trend pretty much in it's death cycle by the late 90s. What is universal even in our time is the book complaining about social norms and rules making no sense, or being in direct violation to our actions - that's why the protagonist calls everyone a phony.
This episode reminds me of the Beatles song, "I am the Walrus." The hidden meaning of that song is, "Stop looking for hidden meanings in all our songs, you nerds!"
I love how it shows the "all art is political" people so well. Not everything has a deeper meaning and not everything is a metaphor for the working class
There is actually a movie with a similar plot to this episode. It's called "American Fiction." It's about an African American author annoyed with all the stereotypes of his race portrayed in books. He writes a story to spite then and it ends up becoming a hit no matter what he does to make it unappealing.
The association that Mark David Chapman took with Catcher in the Rye was when the main character...Holden was a teenager who was making observations regarding the people in his life and the way they were all " fake or phonies" much like the way you can see through people. Chapman made the association with Lennon because a lot of his songs and messages were about peace and love and living a simplistic life. On the other hand, Lennon was a multimillionaire with multiple houses and cars. Chapman basically thought he was living a lie and thought he was being a "phony" just like the book. He also later stated that he shot Lennon so he would become famous.
I mean...he wasn't all that wrong. Wrote a song called imagine litteraly espousing the wonders of a peaceful socialist society that had no religion or capitalism....was living in a nyc penthouse off central park with a million dollar networh when he died. Still doesn't justify Chapman killing him though
I tried two episodes and didn’t get it, felt too stupid for me idk. I enjoyed Hot Rod, Adam Sandler, Seth Rogen, South Park, the Scary movies but TPB 🤷🏻♀️
that was me the first time around ... It made no sense and was low budget.... I tried to watch it again a few years ago and got hooked!!! The first season is a little rough but if you give it time it become SO GOOD!!!!!! @@Z3sty367
I was eating the first time I watched this episode. That was the day I learned to never eat while watching South Park. This show really is full of great life lessons, isn't it?
Apparently most South Park reaction youtubers have a very low tolerance for vomit. This episode and the Team America scene have made so many reacters gag worse than anything else.
There’s this book called last summer written by the writer of the blackboard jungle, and there was a film based on it about this girl who be friends people who commit sexual assault against her. For further context the movie came out the same year as midnight cowboy, easy rider, and the wild Bunch and it was the only time that you saw four X-rated movies nominated for Oscars, including midnight cowboy which one best picture for 1969 But definitely you feel really sorry for the character Rhoda who experiences that horrible crime and the book is a really strong detail about how the other people experience to be used through their lives and they became a group of friends that had sociopathic tendencies and got to the point where they decide to commit a crime against Rhoda because she didn’t experience the same level of traumatic experience. Just like catcher in the rye , there was a sequel book called come winter, where the whole hype of the book is if they’re going to have Rhoda meet up with the people that did that to her and what type of reaction and character that it does to the characters after the committed such a crime. It would’ve been one of the most powerful novels of the 1970s they included that. However, that whole book is hyped for us to see what happened to Rhoda and she’s not even in the book. A lot of people felt the same way with Cartman that the whole book was meant to go trick you and a lot of people don’t like that because nobody likes to be let along. The next thing I want to say that the film was controversial because one of the actors appeared as John Boy in the Waltons. And then, also in come winter, it’s about the character who committed the crime against her and how he has PTSD from what he did, instead of listening to a psychiatrist about changing his behavior, like not hanging out with friends that trigger sociopathic tendencies, so it’s a great book about a criminal mind, it could’ve been a great book about a person confronting the person that they did such a horrible crime against whether that leads to a path of forgiveness or a path of that person bringing himself to justice for something that he did in the past There are plenty examples of books in history where somebody can gain the wrong message, either by misreading or having mental health issues. But it’s bad when we start banning literature in response to violent behavior
Wow, we agree. John lennon was a pos. Ditched his first wife with the kid when he made it big, never looked back. She actually sold love letters and poems from him to make ends meet. Then paul mccartney found them, attained them and gave them back to her. It's like oh yeah thanks. Paul was a pos too Doubt it was actually the catcher in the rye book itself that inspired the "John Lennon! What's in his head? Is there something in his head? Lets find out!". It's tearfully boring
They made me read The Catcher In The Rye when I was in high school and my reaction was exactly the same the boys had, of course I'm not talking about Butters
1:15 Just be patient. Cartman will get there for you. Don't worry. He always does. I had forgotten about Morgan Freeman but like I said, just be patient and you will be rewarded.

I actually like Catcher, but it's not nearly as good as Franny and Zooey or Nine Stories. I've always thought it was a huge shame Salinger was best known for what was, in my opinion, his weakest book. Try reading Franny and Zooey some time, it's amazing!
I don't get how anyone can be triggered by cartoon vomiting. It's not real 😅. I will say I'd rather read "The Poop That Took A Pee" than the banned book.
Toli, it’s true that you have unlocked the 200/201 episodes, BUT, why don’t you start with some classic episodes before? For example, with The List (11x14) or Fish sticks (13x05). I promise nobody 🤮
I literally only remember the part where the title is immediately brought up and the part where Holden didn't pay the hooker. Well I guess 2 memories from it is better than many other media in my weak brain.

I love how you can put up with most of the graphic things South Park does, but watching you squirm when vomit is involved is so funny ngl.
I love how it shows the "all art is political" people so well. Not everything has a deeper meaning and not everything is a metaphor for the working class
I wish I had said that. I've tried to make that argument, but never found the right words.
