I may be a metal head, but this song and these lyrics still have a meaning today in 2024
Excellent song ... Made the world really aware of what was happening in South Africa during the Apartheid regime.... I grew up with this song ... Thank you Mr. Grant
If you not a person of color growing up in apartheid south Africa then you won't understand what these songs meant to us and the political awareness it created back then. Thank you to all the reggea greats that educated us through their songs on not only political issues but also on social issues, the message is still as relevant today as it was back then.
Still remember those times, this song.. It spread throughout the world and it for sure helped the cause so much. The text is almost literally applicable to the situation in Palestine. Thank you South Africa for taking what you've learned in your own country and stepping up to also take down the Israeli Apartheid regime!
The ANC was bankrupt to the point they had no money to run upcoming elections. Suddenly their debts are cleared, and within days of Oct 7th they announce they are taking Israel to the ICJ. Hmm pretty sure the ANC's books are going to be audited, because it looks like its Iran or HAMAS paying them.
There is no apartheid in Israel. Israel has Arabs Muslims. Arab Christians, Druze, Christians. Some in the Knesset, some in the IDF. You cant say the same for the Arab countries like Egypt, Libya, Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco and Yemen who made their countries Judenrein aka Jew free.
Jews were found throughout the Middle East, it is where we come from. We were in the ME first, before Christiantiy and before Islam. And well before the Arabs left the Arabian Peninsula.
@@imisstoronto3121 The apartheid concerns Palestine. And it is the Israeli government imposing the apartheid on Gaza and the Westbank.
We could go further down in history and talk about the origins of life from Africa, but I am talking about the current situation.
If you don't consider the conditions under which the Palestinians in Gaza and the Westbank live apartheid, I am not sure what you would consider it to be.
Played at every function. People today still groove to this song. Yet message is so powerful.
This is a most important song. I was a young Scandinavian teen at the time it was published. It made me notice what it was about, and I asked my parents and my teachers about apartheid. I was horrified. It was one of the reasons I began to watch the news daily.
Eddy you made me open my eyes. Thank you.
@@JAMIEH420 Hahahahahahahaha! I'm sorry, but you are a sorry bunch. Watching the news is a smart and most informative thing.
@@JAMIEH420 ...oh, and why the way, 'woke' was not a thing. The right thing to say in English was: "I woke up" for instance. ;)
@@JAMIEH420 Sorry to tell you but finding out about what happens in the world is very woke
Seeing a lot of comments from people who don't realize this song is one of the reasons apartheid ended in Johannesburg, South Africa.
my approach to history is different from yours,
but I agree with you: it's one of the reasons, if not the song, a concoction of which Eddy's, Peter's, Amnesty's, Angela's, Nina's, along with many other celebrities and organizations, as well as the lives of those famous giants such as Bantu Stephen Biko, as well as many anonymous ones.
Be that as it may, I love this song and always use it to teach apartheid.
And, on a different note: it's great for dancing, ain't it?! ;)
I thought it was rather good when it became popular in that yoghurt advert.
Oh gosh!!!!! I simply fell in love with "Jo'Anna"... Anyone here with me in 2022??.????
I always thought this song was just an 80s dance song until was driving alone earlier this day, 26 June 2022, when the radio station I'm listening to plays 80s music. This song played and I listened carefully to the lyrics and realized the meaning of the song. Now I'm inlove with this song.
So this was one of the big Protest songs .... unfortunately many South Africans today feel we are much worse of now than before .... This beautiful land has now gone totally downhill ... Cos those that are now running it have no clue on how to govern and look after it's people...
L'ho ascoltata, chissà quante volte! Eddy Grant, favoloso! Pure la canzone.
For those people who dislike this music
Has a "stone heart."
This music is a time treasure.^^)... peace for all
Eddy you have thrown me off balance with this song as I can’t help myself than dancing around like a football. Beautiful song
Marvellous song. I have heard this song when I was 17 years old. Nw I'm 42 years still loving
All the years i didn't know who sang this song. Finally 😊❤️
Rest in peace, Desmond Tutu 🪦 My very first bible I had as a child was written by him.
Message and the drums sounds great and perfect, Late 80s and still sounds sweet
Long live all people from emancipation and social evils like apartheid, love to my South African brothers, black power.
All these years listening to it and never payed attention to lyrics 😢
Mdawida... oriti osiep chunya 💖💕
Joanna did give us hope...it happened x The Madela effect x
The drums are still drumming...the tide still turning x
Remember my dad buying the LP, smuggled in during the 80's
I heard this song overseas while I was in the Navy . When I got home I tried to find it in stores but found out at that time it had not been released in the states for some odd reason , so I had to specially order it .It was released later but with little fanfare .
❤❤❤mum sang this to me every day after school as banter.. passed away 2008 still lovvvve this!!!!!❤
Masterpiece, so lovely and timeless
Yes Eddie Grant should be more respectid in South Africa not THE politicians !
lyrics:
Well Jo'anna she runs a country
She runs in Durban and the Transvaal
She makes a few of her people happy, oh
She don't care about the rest at all
She's got a system they call apartheid
It keeps a brother in a subjection
But maybe pressure can make Jo'anna see
How everybody could a live as one
Gimme hope, Jo'anna
Hope, Jo'anna
Gimme hope, Jo'anna
'Fore the morning come
Gimme hope, Jo'anna
Hope, Jo'anna
Hope before the morning come
I hear she make all the golden money
To buy new weapons, any shape of guns
While every mother in black Soweto fears
The killing of another son
Sneakin' across all the neighbors' borders
Now and again having little fun
She doesn't care if the fun and games she play
Is dangerous to everyone
She's got supporters in high up places
Who turn their heads to the city sun
Jo'anna give them the fancy money
Oh to tempt anyone who'd come
She even knows how to swing opinion
In every magazine and the journals
For every bad move that this Jo'anna makes
They got a good explanation
Even the preacher who works for Jesus
The Archbishop who's a peaceful man
Together say that the freedom fighters
Will overcome the very strong
I want to know if you're blind Jo'anna
If you want to hear the sound of drums
Can't you see that the tide is turning
Oh don't make me wait till the morning come
give us hope jo'anna from the covid 19 pandemic. great classical song.
Love eddy grant and his songs, let us all live in peace x
Well done JoAnna! No electricity, rampant hunger, the highest crime figures in the entire world, no water, a failing health system.... Your hope has been delivered! Thank you bra' Edd, this is exactly what you wanted!
Yeah, it hasn't turned out as well as the Rhodesia/zim transition yet, as we all know it's been so successful...
It's not St JoAnna. It was Satan and his demons. But they can change and they will. It's guaranteed. Hope JoAnna! ❤
Even lizards have to eat, you know. Let us have the good stuff. It's that easy.❤
@@redhotpicker Demons cause negative situations, so they can feed off negative energy. But they can and will evolve. They can do positive actions and feed off positive energy.x
Very impressive indeed! What a strong and meaningful message!
I like this song joana..is my one of my favorite..is a wonderful song..
First heard this a few minutes ago on Tiktok, but it felt incredibly familiar. The opening up to the chorus was sampled for the Yop drinkable yogurt commercial in Canada. Blew my damn mind!
Love the drum ing bit remind me the colors of the world Ireland ☘️

EDDY EDDY!! this music is "never die".
Powerful song indeed!
I like the song gimmi hope Jo Anna befor the morning comes side 😊
YOP for when da morning come
It brings back memories, good and bad, bad at the beginning, but good was to come when delivery happened and South Africa was finally freed.❤
Yeah so South Africa is free .... but many of those that really live in this country find we are in a much more shitty place ... This country unfortunately has gone downhill since the ANC took over .... Those who claim to govern have no idea how too ... sad ... I was born in 1971 and have lived thro the transformation that is " from Apartheid to freedom" ... So I know what I'm talking about ... All the luck to you .
@@prageetsinanden9050 what other choice was there at the time. Who else was there at the time? To govern, you need the political knowledge but in South Africa's case, there was an emergency. ANC had to take the helm and stop the white racists from forcing their way in and carry on with the likes of Terreblanche as per the past. You had help from abroad.
@@anniebevis7679 I'm indian .... All I was trying to say was that... a country that was up and running in full throttle was given to the ANC ... who wanted to govern ...and look at what happened ... It's just sad 😔 The help that came from abroad might be scratching their heads now ... Also Terreblanche was with the freedom front fighting for a white homeland . What's the difference when compared to the black S
Not all whites were racists ... From personal experience now ... Many blacks are much more racists .... but let's pray together and hope that God sorts out our beautiful land ... Also try listening to Jimmy Cliff ... Great music ... Another powerfull freedom fighter thro music ... Good Luck 🤞

Absolutely, so many memories..... Wicked song
Evokes memories of early 1988.
RIP Desmond Tutu, mentioned at 3:02.

Great hearing this song again - heard only today in the Pentagon shopping centre, here Chatham Kent.

Dom dom domination
One of the fastest-tempo beats that I have heard.
Yes indeed 2024
This the best music
I like the video for this song
I always knew the Yop commercial sounded familiar XD
It's ironic this song is about everybody living together and accepting we're all just people, while right now in many parts of the world, the trend is separate people according their skin color, even in countries like mine where there is no white people
Joanna is Johannesburg
My boss is named Joanna.......I know the song i about the politicians in Johannesburg, but it gives it a extra dimension. 🤣

Delícia de música, de som. Gimme Hope Joanna!💓
So...I never heard this song before today. I suppose this de-thrones Eddy Grant as King of the One-Hit Wonders. I guess he can still be king of One-Hit Wonders in the USA. This song wasn't played with much popularity in the USA.
"Romancing The Stone" reached #26 in the USA and before that, "I Don't Wanna Dance" came close to the USA top 40. I'd never call Eddy Grant a one hit wonder.Too many USA radio programmers would be afraid to play a heavy message song like "Gimme Hope Jo'anna" despite how catchy and important it was and the big European successes it had...or else they'd cluelessly just see the title and think it was about begging a girl to not break up with him, ignoring the apostrophe cluing about Johannesburg.
Hope it is..❤️❤️
Just before the Covid-19 Pandemic I did project about Civil Right Nelson Mandela who campaigned against the apartheid regime in South Africa.

This song resonates even to this day, I remember protesting as a child in the 1980's against apartheid and I remember what they classed Nelson Mandela as before releasing him. He also advocated for Palestine saying South Africa will not be truly free until Palestine is free. Apartheid is a disgusting regime and needs to be removed. The song lyrics fully applies with Palestine today, May God have mercy on the Palestinians still being subjected to this brutal regime.
All the lyrics can be placed on Israel : "knows how to swing opinion with magazine, for every bad move she makes, she got an explanation"
It also applies with the tyranny that is being applied to the African Boers. The former Party ANC of Mandela has become what it hated.
