My mum's Brother (my Uncle) was reported missing in action and sadly his body was never found. Ordinary Signalman Leonard G Bobby. My mum is in a home with dementia now but still has both original telegrams that were sent to her mother. She never ever forgot him and went to Guernsey and Jersey to pay tribute. I have seen a photo and he was a very handsome man. Such a waste of 462 lives. Lest we forget.
my grandad was a sailor on the charybdis i never saw him as i was born 13 years later but my grand mother was a fantastic lady would loved to have known him always in my thoughts xx
My stepfather was one of the few survivors of the sinking of this ship. He was only 18 at the time and was in the freezing cold sea for many hours before being rescued. He would have loved to see this video, but sadly passed away in 2007. He never forgot his comrades who didn't survive and always had a couple of rums for them on the 23rd October.
Do you know what ship he was rescued by, my grandfather served on HMS Grenville, one of the ships that rescued survivors from Charybdis after the battle.
My wife's uncle (Ronald Girdwood) was a telegraphist aboard the Charybdis and died at the age of 21 when it was torpedoed on 23rd October 1943. We have quite a good (scanned) photo of twenty of the crew posing on the ship. His name is commemorated in perpetuity on panel 81, column 1 at the Plymouth Naval Memorial.
Wow. Incredible dive. Just amazing. There are some major Conger eels lurking down there. Great video! The soundtrack makes it even more dramatic. Well done!
Great video! Very atmospheric with the music. Interesting seeing the depth gauge as well. I would add more tags to the video so it's easier for people to find. Thanks for posting!
My Grandfather Donald Fake was killed on the Charybdis. He left behind a young wife of 26 and two small children aged 4 and 2. Such a waste...................
My grandfather, although he himself didn't serve on Charybdis, served on one of the vessels escorting it during the mission. He never spoke about the battle, little wonder why when you see the state of the ship.
her role wasn't to engage warships as such, but to fight aircraft, which she was specifically armed for. The concept remains today with Aegis cruisers.

May those who went down with HMS Charybdis rest in peace
She took huge damage from those torpedo hits. I'm not surprised that the death toll was so high. God rest them.
