  • Cardinal George Pell has revealed he is ashamed of the Catholic Church for the way it dealt with the “cancer” of child sex abuse in the past.
In an exclusive world-first televised interview with Sky News Australia presenter Andrew Bolt, Cardinal Pell talks candidly about the scourge of child abuse within his own church and how the many failures to act still haunt him today.
“It was like a cancer … we had to cut it out,” he said.
“I totally condemn these sorts of activities, and the damage that it’s done to people.
“One of the things that aggrieves me is the suggestion that I’m anti-victim, or not sufficiently sympathetic. I devoted a lot of time and energy to try to save them, to get justice, to get help and to get compensation.”
Cardinal Pell also shone light on the 405 days he spent locked up for seven child sex offences which were eventually quashed by the High Court of Australia.
He befriended several inmates, including a convicted murderer, and witnessed the devastation ice addiction had on those around him.
Cardinal Pell explained he felt flat following his release but he felt no “anger or hostility” towards his accuser.
He hopes to transition into a quiet life of gardening where he could focus on growing roses and cabbage.

I am an atheist, and the catholic church has much to answer for, but this case shocks me to the core. Victoria needs to reassess it's institutional impartiality. The ABC needs to be disbanded. None of this will happen of course. All in all a stain on Australian history.

“Peter, you are a rock, and on this rock I will build my church”. How did a church with such a solid foundation get to the point where it is crumbling? The stench of the paedophile scandals is still pungent. The immeasurable corruption at the Vatican. These things are irreparably damaging the credibility and the whole point of existence of the Roman Catholic Church. I grew up in a small rural parish in Ireland, I served on the Altar as an Altar boy. Went to different events organised for young people by the Parish Priests. I had thought of giving my own life to the church such was my experience throughout my growing up. I even met the girl I would eventually marry at a World Youth Day event organised by Pope John Paul II. I never witnessed any of the bad stuff. I go with my wife and young family to Mass regularly and I always feel like it’s a grounding point for my week. But lately I have been feeling immense sadness when I attend Mass. Because of these wrongdoings. These shameful sickening acts carried out by members of my church and covered up by others. And the sense that we are still trying to cover things up. And there’s no moral leadership any more. The priest can’t open his mouth about moral issues. The church has lost its solid foundation. I think about those who passed the faith to me. My parents teachers and parishioners. How they must feel. I think about the victims of abuse whose lives have been destroyed. I also think about the humble, honest priests who were part of my Catholic upbringing. Who lived for the word of God. Whose vocations have been tarnished by actions of others. Also I have witnessed Good people being used as scapegoats by the Media, whose lives have been destroyed not through fault of their own but because of the actions of others in historical abuse cases. In their pursuit of a headline they need someone to blame and go after an easy target. I have witnessed first hand the damage that has caused to someone who was totally misrepresented in the media. I have been struggling with my conscience because of this and for this reason I wrote a lengthy letter to my local Parish Council with evidence I had on one such case. (The person has since been cleared of any wrong doing). I didn’t even get an acknowledgement yet alone a reply. If the Church is not here to defend the innocent against miscarriage of justice, or protect them from an unjustified media campaign, then what is the point? Be not afraid. Lead us in the path of riteousness. If God is truly on our side then who could possibly be against us?

Jon Byrne. 1958 was the the first recognisable nail of freemason revolution in the catholic coffin. It has been relentless ever since. Our Lady of Good Success in Quito in 1610 spelt out about this false church, the one that has apostatized, and heading to hell in a basket. Not one pope since 1917 has obeyed the Consecration wishes of Our lady, and now we have the result. And not once, since 1958, has any pope had the courage to stand against the apostates to firmly uphold traditionalism, in a voice heard all around the world! Your cry of frustration is shared by those who are traditional and faithful believers. This is no time to quote sanctimonious and pious platitudes to you, instead reach for your beads. They are our real weapon, and only consolation, when even the Vatican has turned away from their vows to Christ, and abandoned their flocks. It's far too late for Man to save himself, that ship sailed a long time ago: no, Christ, the just judge will come to get His people while telling others that "I don't know you....."

I am a Catholic since I was little (not a good one offcourse) but I am pretty comfortable how I am so far. I have heard so many beautiful story about forgiveness but I never seen something so real like this. I still don't understand what make him do that? He literally has been destroyed to his very core as far as humanly concerned. But he still have a strength to forgive his enemy? After all these has happened to him? Why? What for? Those people clearly said they wanted him dead and rotten in hell. Why he still give them favour by forgive them? The will never forgive him in return or at least be nice to him. So why bother? What's the point of doing that? He has so many supporters including those 2 ex-prime ministers. He could've easily turn around by utilising his powerful contacts around the world to crush his enemies as easy as turning his palm. And he still chooses to give forgiveness? Is he running out of options? I think this is insane and It doesn't make any sense at all. I know I might clearly lack of faith but honestly I couldn't do what he does. Maybe he has something or some being with him which empower him that makes those things that happen to him looks like nothing. In the other hand, he must have a great power so he is able to do all of this. If anything I hope one day I could learn a little tiny bit of this to make me a better person.

There are only three options: Heaven (forgiven/sinless for whole life), Purgatory (cleansing of all minor offences against our God or Hell where an individual HAS NOT repented/confessed their sins, which really have offended God ( WE take ourselves to hell, as we do NOT believe that God has saved us and we want to "be with our mates" suggest Mao, Hitler, et al). Is he ashamed of his own actions? Child sex abuse is a witness-less crime. The Court found him guilty through a jury of our peers. The appeals court found that there was no basis for an appeal. And though the Supreme Court found Witness J to be a Credible, and reliable witness, it stated that this was not enough to convict him? What was more deplorable was that the Supreme Court took more probability that his custom was to stand out the front.
This may have been the case, but I guarantee that this was not always the case straight after mass, especially on this occasion.
Professor Michael McAuley, president of the St Thomas More Society who has practised as a barrister for more than 35 years, said it was hard to see how the High Court could have come to a different decision “without serious damage to its own reputation”.
Witness J was found to be a Credible, and reliable witness in the eyes of the high court. And dispute what many Catholics and Pell supporters have posted about him which are all unfounded and extremely un-Christian, his motives in coming forward was to tell the truth, which the high court found. So to not get a third conviction, is a sign of a broken system. www.abc.net.au/news/2019-08-21/george-pells-surviving-victim-reacts-to-appeal-dismissal/11434894 . This was not about supporting any movement, or financial gain for him, or political sides.
Our legal system doesn't allow previous allegations, and other court hearings to be heard in a new case, but this is not the first time that Pell has been in court for allegations of child abuse. In June 2002, Pell stands aside while he is investigated by the church over an accusation that he sexually abused a 12-year-old altar boy at a youth camp on Phillip Island in 1961 while a seminarian. Pell denies the allegations. The verdict of the retired judge is not proven but not dismissed. For 2 new boys to come forward is a server indictment on him.
Prior to this, in 1973 Pell lives in the parish house of St Alipius in Ballarat East with the pedophile priest Gerald Ridsdale. Pell has always maintained he never knew Ridsdale was abusing children. But this is later disputed during the Royal Commission into institutional sexual abuse of Children. Ridsdale was a prolific sex offender who abused children throughout Victoria from the 1960s to the 1980s. What Pell may have known of Ridsdale’s offending and that of other paedophile priests becomes the subject of much of the royal commission’s later questioning.
September 1979 Pell is part of a meeting that discusses Ridsdale’s resignation from Edenhope and a meeting in January 1980 that approves sending the priest to the National Pastoral Institute in Elsternwick. Though Ridsdale is taken away from easy access to young children there, he continues to offend.
1993 Pell supports Ridsdale during his first court appearance for child sex offences. Ridsdale is convicted between 1993 and 2013 of abuse and indecent assault charges against 54 children. In 2017 Ridsdale pleads guilty to further charges of abusing 11 children.
2001 Pell is appointed archbishop of Sydney, where he now oversees the Towards Healing program. The royal commission in 2014 later finds that during this period Pell and the Sydney archdiocese spent more than $1m fighting a legal claim by an abuse victim, John Ellis, to discourage others from attempting the same.
Can you see a pattern.... Pell’s release doesn’t make him innocent, it only means he has been found not guilty in the eyes of man and woman, and only the two alive survivors (witness J and Pell) of that abuse know what went on. Witness J has told the truth, and as far as he is concerned, he is free from his debt to his friend to come forward and shed light to the events that had transpired.
Pell has been instrumental in covering up previous sexual abuse crimes, and no doubt he is a master in covering up his own.

There's something dark about Australian culture. It's not just a tall-poppy syndrome, which other cultures often have doses of - e.g., 'Jante Law'. It goes deeper than that. 'Groupthink' does not adequately describe it either, again, given that other cultures have it in various doses. 'Pack mentality', as Andrew described it in an earlier report, comes closer to the truth.
We can recognize the same dynamic playing out every so often in Australian culture. Lindy Chamberlain, for example. We see snapshots of the same mentality when overseas guests get shouted down for daring to challenge the status quo. Cassie Jaye, for example, whom Andrew interviewed.
Cardinal Pell was targeted not just because he was a 'tall poppy', but because he stood for something that Australians resent. Australians resent the individualist, the outspoken free-thinker who does not care what others think of him. Australians resent those whom they cannot touch. They are uncomfortable with freedom and individualism. How could it be otherwise? Australia began as a penal colony, where the only thing that the outspoken, individualistic free-thinker can count on is to have his opportunities, freedoms, lifestyle and even lifespan corralled and curtailed.
And yet, Australians still cannot touch Cardinal Pell, considering the dignity with which he survived the onslaught.

For example in Boston, there were written letters to Cardinal Bernard Law from parents of sexually abused kids, which he then proceeded to either do nothing or just simply move them to another parish. I would think it reasonable that there were similar cases here in Australia seeing as the catholic church has built this secrecy around the issue all over the world and especially with the number of people abused and the number of priests doing it.

Im not here to judge any body. In relevance to Pell, I honestly think that majority number of people in Australia or even perhaps the world are not only aware, but have accepted the fact of abuse is not only shameful, but an ugly reality that has been present in the church since heaven knows when.
Metaphorically, I think we can safely say that perhaps, Pell was a "victim of circumstance" due to the crimes committed by certain individuals that clearly and consciously derelicted their Christian morals, principles, compassion, codes etcetera, when serving God in their duties.
In my opinion here is, that one of the precedents we set as the modern world in the Nuremberg trials following WWII, accountability and duty of care were established, overriding the chain of command rule unconditionally, among other executive rules and principals also.
At the realisation of abuse and crimes within the church, the top brass of the Vatican chose to keep it hush- hush and compensated the victims financially rather than setting up a safer system of firstly prevention, along with an independent body of authority to deal with the clean up and the prosecution of guilty individuals.
On the subject of suffering, the numerous amount of silent victims of the church, struggling to get by in life still today, therefore will always be present until it has been addressed and dealt with from the core.
G.Pell was one of the influential and respected figures that could have persuaded and/or even led the projects and operations of progressive achievement for not only the churches future, also his own by changing his destiny with good deed transgressions.
I dont belong to any denomination of any religious establishments, and certainly do not blame or talk down the Christian faith, or any other faith in any way what so ever, for I know that individual or collective faiths, ideologies are incapable of committing crimes and atrocities on their own accord without human intervention or aide. Karma though is looking more and more to win my heart as I get older and witness such events as G.Pell and alike events.

Oh and let’s not forget that good old cliche about altar boys and choirboys swigging the communion wine! That kind of kids’ fantasy was around when I was a little chorister. We LOVED telling tall tales about getting at the communion wine. And of course it’s such nonsense. Can’t believe anyone today would be silly enough to include it in a complaint against a priest!

You need to look at the Catholic Church not Pell. He was uncovering serious issues within the Vatican and was completely stiched up. Even up until the end he was speaking out against the people within the Vatican trying to expose the evil and corruption.
I love the catholic faith, but he was completely let down by the church and left to die in prison.
He was and is a man of God and I pray for his soul and that he rests in peace.

Andrew bolt, I don't know what you believe regarding faith. I know you're not a Christian
But might I say, that I admire you greatly because you've done what so many refused to do. I've seen 'Christians', even a close friend turn into hate filled people about this.
Your attitude is far more loving than these 'Christians'. Christianity is meant to be about love, and in that regard, I see your character here as far more Christian than these confessing ones.

    • @chrispaynter
      @chrispaynter 4 роки тому +2

2 corinthians 4:4 says the devil has blinded the non Christians so they cannot understand the Gospel. That's a paraphrase
God taught me a prayer about this "Father God, remove the veil (blindness)"
Once the blindness is gone, that can receive the Gospel by hearing it (Romans 10:17) and thus accept it. The Bible is the word of God, and without trying to disrespect catholics, people can not hear divine mercy or other words, it is only the Gospel verbatim that is the word of God, and the Gospel in the Bible alone can save them.
