First Spacewalk Successful for Drew, Bowen

  • The first EVA of STS-133 was completed on Flight Day 5 by astronauts Steve Bowen and Al Drew. The two installed equipment on numerous positions outside the International Space Station, including a power extension cable between the Unity and Tranquility nodes to provide a contingency power source. NASA selected Bowen to replace mission specialist Tim Kopra, who was injured in a bicycle accident. Bowen will perform two spacewalks on this mission. He is the first U.S. astronaut to fly on back-to-back missions; he was a mission specialist on STS-132, which flew in May 2010.

    This should be named one of the hardest jobs, you have to be smart, physically fit, have courage and no stupidity (kerbal space program lol) as well as the fact that the suit gives probably 15-25% mobility, 70-150 tools, possibility to lose parts, and the amount of time required to be on the spacewalk, as well as the dangers the vacuum of space poses. just my opinion.

      Yep an astronaut is not like any other person. The only people I could relate them to are special forces military members...they are the type of people that are just good at so many things, and usually never grew up thinking they would become astronauts.

    Look at motion length 9 min 11 secs on, central right portion of screen, right of astronaut's head. Unidentified white dots, high speed, crossing in regular cruise speed. More dots cruising after those 2.

    Astro_Tim has to call the shots from the ground instead of from inside the station because a week before launch when they were fixing the helium burst disk he flipped his bike and had to have knee surgery so now he is the EVA Capcom and Steve Bowan is EV1 instead of Steve being the Capcom.

    The thing at 9:32 is not space junk or a anything larger than a bolt. If you watch it in slow motion it's not coming from Behind the space station it's coming from in between the astronaut and the shuttle. It's small. I think it's a price of what they opened

    1. They would never hire an astronaut with vertigo.
    2. Perhaps vertigo doesn't apply here, because maybe it is caused by the fear of falling off something, and great heights. In space, there is no up or down (in the gravity sense) So perhaps they wouldn't feel vertigo, because when they look at earth they could be looking as if it was on their side, and not underneath them.

      +Kshitij Garg So what!! If u can see the moon from earth, then why wouldent u be able to see the moon from ISS?? The visability should be even better from space because u dont have any disturbence from clouds, pollution ect. ect.

    • @luffebassen
      @luffebassen 3 роки тому

      @Apple TV But what im trying so hard to make you explain to me, is what is the difference of standing on the earth and being able to see the moon on a sunny day, but as soon as you get out in space, then suddenly it becomes invisible LOL.
      Makes ZERO sense!
      But im listening??

    • @luffebassen
      @luffebassen 3 роки тому

      @Apple TV But iv seen 100+ if not 1000+ spacewalks and in NONE of them will you ever see the moon. What are the odds??
      Why would the camera not clear towards the moon for just a few seconds if it was there and visible for the beauty of it??
      Something seems off here.
      Di you know of any spacewalk where the moon can be seen??
      We always only see a camera pointing towards earth and then space behind the earth. But once in a while you should be able to see the moon in the distance behind the earth. But that never happens!

  • @blazontroll
    @blazontroll 13 років тому

    @pipkin1973 well first off there is basically 0 drag in space this means that if you pushed yourself off the shuttle at a certain velocity you would continue at that velocity at the same direction not counting gravitational influences. They don't fly off as they and the ISS are moving at the same velocity just like the earth is moving around the sun but we don't fall off the earth, this theory follows newtonian physic rather than i believe aristolian physics.
