- We've heard the saying 'it takes a village to raise a child' but does it also take a village to protect a child? Bob Lonne talks us through the current state of child protection and how building up community around children and families, by making it everyone's business, could lead to better outcomes in the future.
Bob Lonne (PhD) has extensive experience as a social worker in various child protection and youth justice roles in Queensland and West Australia. Professor Lonne has researched, written and consulted widely about the systemic issues confronting contemporary approaches to protecting children. His work combines academic rigour with a hands-on understanding of the practice realities in this complex area. He co-authored Reforming Child Protection and his research has examined media portrayals, informal care systems, kinship care, differential response, mandatory reporting, workforce issues and ethical practice in child welfare interventions. He has provided high level advice to governments in Australia, Canada and Ireland on how to refocus child welfare systems to achieve better outcomes for children, families and communities.

Yes , protecting children is everyone s business.
Unfortunately there will still be lots of guardians with life long emotional issues of which for whom without years of therapy and hard work, would never be able to provide a supportive, loving, and stable home environment. Increase prevention, but be very careful of the things that are assumed to be fixable in the short term and not damage the child for life. The system needs an overhaul in terms of foster and adoptive home screenings (and countless other things) regardless.
Parents! Make sure that your children know your name and that you are not just Mom or Dad.
100% true. It does take a village to raise a child. Unfortunately, we live in a hierarchical structure built and designed purely for economics and separation. Imagine the fear the elite would have if communities stuck together, demanding change, becoming once again self-sufficient, helping our neighbours, and yes...raising our children! For thousands of years before industrialisation, this is exactly how we lived. Im only very new to the study of sociology and from what I've learnt so far, I really feel ripped off. We've been forced to live in family structures we thought were normal, only to find that they are just man-made concepts, designed essentially, to make the rich, so much richer. This, we are now seeing, is at the detriment of the working class and those below the poverty line. Mental Health issues are skyrocketing, substance abuse and homelessness are heartbreaking statistics to look through. It's a broken system that's perfect at breaking people. Bring back community I say!

Families where abuse occurs are often isolated, and purposefully so, and they regularly exist in the middle of otherwise connected communities. We cannot assume that all families want the abuse to stop (as children do) or that all families will voluntarily participate in community. Doesn't this mean that if the community has an interest in protecting children, it has to be willing to infringe on the "family unit"?
