For the past couple years, the Greater Idaho Movement has gained a lot of momentum. Its goal is to convince both the Oregon and Idaho state legislatures, and then the United States Congress, to redraw the boundary between Oregon and Idaho. The goal is to take at least 15 mostly rural, conservative-leaning counties in Eastern Oregon and have them become part of Idaho.
Do you think the Greater Idaho Movement will actually be successful?
I give it a 62% chance of happening
no. i really hope not.
No. No way Idaho can afford to pay all of Oregons debts and taxes in those regions. The legal issues and costs would bankrupt the state.
The people want it, so I'd say they should be allowed to

Not gonna happen. Oregon pays so much for infrastructure in the eastern half of the state and most of that money comes from the western half. It will mess up Idaho's budget so they'll never agree.

From what I understand bot Oregon and Idaho already voted to give the OK, and it's up to the US government, but I'm willing to guarantee congress would *never* let that happen
But it should
@thomasdevlin5825 Democrats won't let it happen because it would give Idaho, a state they have no hope of winning, an additional electoral college vote at the expense of one of Oregon's even though the congressional seat would not change.
@@qwilliams1539this is it. It would literally convert Idaho into a Montana/Texas level threat
@@thomasdevlin5825 A bunch of activists in county government groups voted to join another state, but that’s not really how it works. It’d be like New Jersey voting that it wants to be a part of France. Like, cool vote, doesn’t mean anything.
Truth is, and it’s unfortunate but it *is* true, is that the eastern part of Oregon doesn’t collect enough tax money to cover its own expenses even now. There’s just not that many people and businesses compared to the west side of the Cascades, and the ones that exist aren’t the sort that pay a boatload of taxes every year. If Pendleton was a financial hub to rival Portland, maybe. If John Day had the Silicon Valley, perhaps. But they don’t. They have ranch land, canyonland, scrub forest and desert and rolling hills. It’s beautiful, but it’s not rich. So when Burns needs the highway re-paved, or the Mason Dam needs repairs, more than half that money’s coming from taxpayers over the mountains.
We can make all the noise we want about shifting the boundaries, but the world doesn’t run on hopes and dreams. This isn’t Hollywood. It takes money, and the finances have to support a move before it’ll even be considered.
Hermiston, Oregonian here. It's weird that Portland controls the entire state so I don't blame people for wanting this.
No wonder you would think this is a good idea. You don't even know where your state capital is. If this were to happen you probably have to move to Portland anyway to a sanctuary City so you wouldn't get deported
Salem, Oregon is the capital and I am against the greter idaho movement because then what little control conservatives have in western Oregon like me would now have no chance at keeping gun from the donkeys. @@steventeter3332 keep being you 😂😂😂 we need stupid barely literate people like you to keep the people with functional brains entertained. Thank you for your service 😂😂😂❤️
@@steventeter3332 He knows that Portland isn't the capitol. Portland controls the state because most of the states population lives there (and are liberals) and thus has the controlling votes. Maybe turn on your brain before opening your pie hole.
Same thing happens in Washington. 55-60% of the population lives in the Seattle metro area and therefore controls the state by what they vote for. That''s where the vast majority of the liberals live. The state is conservative outside of that. The fact that Seattle isn't the capitol has no bearing on this.

States changing borders like this for political reasons would be precedent for a lot of messy border changes across the country.

Kansas will split up.. we're so in the middle...
A lot of cities in red states would end up becoming parts of blue states. If you insist it has to be continuous they would just make narrow strips connecting to another state like they do in gerrymandering.
It would also open up the possibility for people to just move across the state line and then vote away chunks of that state over to their home state. California sure has a ton of people in the south who could easily strip away parts of Arizona. There are certainly places along the northern and southern border with enough people to vote away chunks of the US to Mexico and Canada as well if we were going to allow this kind of thing.
If you don't like it where you live, YOU move. You don't take the land with you and move the border lmao. That's not how this works. The problem with this is that Oregon literally gains nothing out of this except lost tax revenue and lost Congressional seats. There’s no way the Oregon state legislature would agree to this. It’s a one-sided proposition. Outside the state, getting Senate Democrats to agree to this would also be next to impossible without a compromise like DC or Puerto Rico statehood.
Many people in the comments don’t think about this logically or realistically they only support the idea out of feelings and disdain for people who lean left.
crazy, isn't it? A government supposedly derived its power from the consent of the people, and here it is plainly denying democratic will for its own self-interest. We've fallen pretty damn far.
@@jakecarpenter397 It’s not simply a matter of self-interest that is the concern here. Over half the state leaving would inevitably harm Oregon residents. It’s also wrong to set a precedence of state borders being drawn based on political leaning. I understand Oregon conservatives feel they aren’t being represented. However, you could also say the same of predominantly liberal cities in conservative states. Take Texas for example, you think it’d make sense for Austin, Houston, and Dallas to become their own independent city-states simply because those cities lean left while the rest of the state leans right? Democracy doesn’t mean we can get whatever we want if we have enough votes. Boundaries have to be set in order to maintain a functional, safe, and prosperous nation.
@Justin B That's... precisely the definition of democracy. In its simplest meaning, enough votes lead to whatever outcome you want. It's why the founders avoided implementing democracy in its pure form. Anyway, it is entirely self-interest on the part of the Oregon government. They've demonstrated a consistent willingness to damage their constituents as long as it means they keep getting kickbacks and maintain their power. Also, of course, the western half would be against it. Their food is going to get more expensive, but why should that be the problem of the disenfranchised? If we can change nothing else about our system, then by all means, let's at least maintain the consent of the governed. It's the most important thing, and if that means Huston and Austin are city states, then sure, why not? It's a hell of a lot better than telling folks who feel powerless to just deal with it.

Idaho is basically saying to Oregon, "Idaho? No, Udaho."
Literally every state in the country (including Idaho) has a significant divide between rural and urban populations. It's not a good enough reason to fuck around with moving borders.
Intolerable political differences between people residing in different large geographic areas isn't a good enough reason to look at redrawing borders? Then what the heck is a good reason?
@@Arbidarb there aren't any good reasons I can think of. I mean, wars and stuff can cause it, but those aren't "good reasons" as much as they are "strong reasons."
If you want to rearrange borders for any reason, it's a pretty big deal. If you want to rearrange the borders of a US state by THAT MUCH, it is a giant deal. A monumental deal. A monumental deal which ultimately doesn't even fix the fact that there will continue to be a political divide between the urban and rural parts of both Idaho and Oregon. And every other state. So what exactly is it solving?
This is just how democracy works, no matter how small you make a population, or where you move the borders to, there will always be people who have political disagreements. The point of a democracy is to have people vote to decide which things happen based on majority consensus, not total consensus. The country has its own consensus in one direction. Each state has its own consensus in another direction. Each county has its own consensus in another direction. Each town has its own consensus in another direction. And on each level the people get to vote and make decisions which are relevant on that level. It's not necessarily an ideal system, it doesn't work out perfectly for everyone, but it's the system this country is built on. I think it's reasonable to say that the system is bad and that it shouldn't be used, but I think the idea of wanting to move borders around in in attempt for one side to get their way is just antithetical to the whole system.
@Matt McConaha I'm not saying it isn't significant (historically speaking), but it isn't monumental in any other way than it is rare. Usually you see revolutions or secessions in situations like this. Instead we're looking at a change that wouldn't fundamentally change the country, with an effect on Oregon would be minimal.
And we aren't talking about an urban versus rural split. We are taking about an East versus West split. Western Oregon is by no means urban, and yet they still align with the "urban" political sentiment.
Given the increasing political tension these days, it seems more prudent to change borders in order to allow people to govern themselves than to dismiss those people's problems because they're a minority. Tyranny of the majority is a real thing, and it can cause some significant harm. Borders don't stay static forever anyways.
