My late parents were watching TV and the news was reporting a record snowfall for Boston. It made the next day's newspapers and the TV networks. No trolley, no bus and electric bus via double overhead wires, no taxis, but a short section of the Red Line subway in a tunnel and the L train service was still running over the streets.

Canada here. This is just normal. We cope with winter tires on cars, plowing and salting the roads and sidewalks. Personal dress code is wool socks, snow boots, long johns and warm pants (I wear ski pants over jeans), layer upper body with T shirt, flannel shirt and maybe a fleece under your parka, toque, warm gloves or mitts, and a scarf if it's windy. No big deal. Just take your time and enjoy the beautiful snow.

It's doubtful the lower Thames froze at all...or, if so then at least far less frequently simply because tidal rivers are notoriously hard to freeze. We have several tidal rivers where I live and while we gets lots of snow, long periods of well beliw 0° weather and a our lakes and fresh water rivers and streams freeze regularly, I've never seen a tidal river freeze sufficiently to allow other than small animal foot traffic.

I remember back in the 70's and 80's in NY we used to get blizzards all the time, the kids loved it and of course the adults hated it. NY hasn't had a blizzard in years now, same goes for the summer time, we haven't had heatwaves since the 90's. I remember having blackouts a lot back in the 90's, and it's been pretty good so far, we still get bad weather, but it's not like back in the 70's,80's,and 90's. NY hasn't had a bad hurricane in years, we get the rain and wind that comes up the cost, but we haven't had a major hurricane in a long time. I hate when people act like it's the end of the world when they get 12inches of snow, or a couple of inches of rain, I've seen much worse when I was younger, and as for the rest of the US, some states get hit pretty bad, but they don't act like it's the end of the world, only the media does that. I remember Hurricane Sandy, a lot of people think NY got hit by the Hurricane, and we didn't, I remember that night and early morning like it was yesterday, we had no rain, well maybe a drizzle, no wind, but that night I watched as water from the ocean just started to slowly come up the beach, over the boardwalk, then it came in the street, and it kept coming, but it was really slow, some people were outside when the water hit, but like I said there was no rain, no wind, and the ocean water just came on land very slowly, and it didn't stop, at some pint in the middle of the night the water must have pushed on land faster because when we woke up everything was a disaster, there was nothing but sand everywhere. People lost their cars, and they got a lot of water damage in their homes, the worst part was losing the electric, it was cold and nobody had heat or lights for over a month, but we never got hit with the Hurricane, and I find that very odd.

LOL That's the real difference. Same here in Canada. At least my mid-November we're fully ready for "Snowmageddon". My 4WD SUV is wearing it's snow tires, the radiator has anti-freeze good for -40 C, as is the windshield washer reservoir and the gas tank is always topped up with "winter gas", the winter wipers are installed and the battery has been tested and passed. In the back are two large fleece blankets, a second winter coat, spare gloves & mittens, bottled water, power bar snacks, candles, extendable snow brush, ice scraper, camp shovel and a basic tool box. Every homeowner owns a few snow shovels, bags of rock salt handy, ice scrapers and possibly a roof snow rake. We don't install furnaces, water heaters or any type of plumbing in attics or exterior wall of the home, water supply services are buried at least 4 ft. below grade and roof are rated for the snow load and I have 50 inches of fiberglass insulation in the attic. A wood burning stove or fireplace is a bonus for many. Winter isn't cheap in Canada, but somehow we make it through to another spring by May.
