  • In this video filmed in Adelaide with ‪@adelaidegroupskate6291‬ we look at the correct way to skate up hills so you don't loose too much speed. Great question from @maidm10.
Most people get hills wrong by starting to push extra long and wide to the side. This is counterproductive. Instead shorter, faster strides should be done, changing feet with a much faster cadence. Bringing the heels into the centre when you set down will gain you power and finesse (skating with your heels apart looks kinda goofy while being super wasteful of energy).
What problems are you facing on up hills? Share in the comments, I'll try and help.

Great tip. I love skating uphills - it's an amazing cardio workout. I seem to be in a minority of one in this 🤣

Hi. This is Sergio from Skatefresh Team. Lots of hard work indeed! Skating against the wind is also very challenging but a great way to gain strength.

hey there, admiring your tips ; I have a question if u may, can u explain how rollerblades turn ? I mean u can turn things with 1 point of contact with ground easy but blades have 3-4 wheels and point of contact with ground, so how it is turn ? I can t , I just turning by levitate one of my foot , changing its direction and put it that way and repeat it with other. can u explain its mechanism ? thx

Hi. This is Sergio from Skatefresh Team. There are a lot of different ways to turn being on rollerblades. The easiest one which most beginners would use is called A-frame turn, and implies having all wheels in contact with the floor and the whole body practically in a static position. What makes you turn in the A-frame is to apply pressure on one foot, but that cannot be seen. You can learn that technique in the Asha's online course for beginners here skatefresh.com/product/how-to-skate-beginner-level-full-course/ The course also includes the parallel turn which is the second turn to learn. In these turns the body acts as a unit, so you shouldn't think of one point of contact. All wheels are in contact indeed. As I said at the beginning, there are lots of different ways, and neither of us can explain the mechanics of each method in a few words, hence Asha has created courses where she explained everything with lots of details. What you described (levitating one foot...) sounds like you have been doing small steps in V, and angling them, in order to turn. That's actually pretty fine for an absolute beginner when you don't have much momentum. Once you have a little more speed you will need to master the A-frame, the parallel turn, and later on more ways, even some that increase speed while taking the curve.
