- George Orwell is a British writer, journalist and publicist. His works are distinguished by a simple style of writing, criticism of totalitarianism and support for democratic socialism. Orwell's most famous works include the satirical novel "Animal Farm" and the dystopian novel "1984".

If only Orwell had lived another 10, 15, 20, 25 years as he should have....he would have had so much to say about so much which was to come... everything from the Korean War and the Cold War, the nuclear arms race madness, The Beatles and the Counterculture, the Vietnam War, the decline of his beloved England as a world power,.the Space Age and the Moon Landings, the "malaise" era of the 1970s, and so much more.... what a loss for us who believe in what he stood for.....

The negative comments all come from people who never read "1984". These are quotes from that book. "Big Brother" and sometimes "O'brian" are saying these things. Not Orwell.
1984 should be a mandatory read in every high school across America

George Orwell is much better than most of these quotes suggest. Many of them are seriously misleading.
Most of these are quotes from his books, especially Animal Farm.
@@lawrencelewis2592 Exactly, and they represent the views of the characters. not Orwell. It would have been better to look at Orwell's essays, reviews, and some of his letters. There is plently of good material there.

Not "power".
The first quotes came straight out of Animal farm and 1984, which are from novels, not philosophical quotes spoken at dinner parties.

You missed the best line from NINETEEN EIGHTY-FOUR:

Bill Jordan wrote the book “No Second Place Winner” about gunfights in his uniformed service. I disagree: First Place, I stopped the bad guy and I am not hurt. Second Place, I stopped the bad guy and go to the hospital while he goes to the hospital or morgue. Third Place, we both go to the morgue, however those I was protecting are not hurt.
The "War is Peace..." quote and many others here are not what Orwell believed, but what Big Brother and The Party and other real, Fascist regimes wanted people to believe. Orwell is primarily a cautionary writer.
Write the wrong thing and get too near the truth and some nutjob will assassinate you.

One can be wise in benefitting oneself, but if performed with active disregard to others it usually amounts to something evil, if the disregard was unwitting, it's may not always be.

Mental pain, far worse. I mean the human body and mind has a pretty clever trick to deal with extreme physical pain, if it's relatively healthy, it enters in a state of shock.

It's from Animal Farm; great little novel if you haven't read it. "All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others" means that it's easy to say things such as "everyone is of equal value" but it is not often played out that way in reality. People often believe they see all as equal, but when they get the opportunity to be fair or unfair they choose unfairness in favour of themselves or someone who holds their values.
