Monk made so many different recordings of this tune, all so great! The first version I heard was by Wes Montgomery, his trio, which was also outstanding.
He means of the renditions Mr. Monk has done himself. Monk never plays a song the same way twice. So you can listen to the same song over and over again and still be listening to a different piece! (Notice that this is take 7 of just that recording session).
The first time, I listened to it, I was in my 30ies living in Paris. At once, as I was burning, I realized, that I will never make it as an artist. Curious, the young man sees the abyss, but keeps on running towards it.
This is one of my favorite jazz tunes. The first version I ever Listened was Bill Evan's California Here I Come version. It inspired me to make an arrangement in Odd Meters. Set arrangement i performed at my Graduation Recital for my Jazz Performance Bachelor, this past April 26th, 2017. I Uploaded the video of set version if anyone is interested.
100per cent music, no compromise, first recording actually played by Bud Powell,Monk ,however, played it in various recordings mainly in Eflat minor to make it sound as flat as possible
there are dozens if not hundreds of versions of this song floating around as performed by thelonious so yea he wrote it but that doesn't automatically qualify it as the best!
This is the BEST version of this song...
Very MONKish indeed!

+Michael Gerrard Tyson guess we'll never know
He is not with us anymore. :'(
Genio. Monk è la personificazione del jazz.
Un génie d’une sensibilité unique !
Just incredible ! I noticed, some notes which reminded me "i fall in love too easily". Anyway this man got magic in his hands
Sin palabras...💖
its just jazz!
It's only fitting that it's the best, seeing that he wrote it. :-)
david - exactly ! :)
But he's been recorded playing it so many times.

モンクは多くを流暢には喋らない。しかし大事なことは全て語ってる。
anyone have the sheet music for this version?
This is REAL jazz, but anyone who says they like it is lying. Like 90% of the people that listen to him do it for the name drop.
John Shayne I know what you mean, "You cannot pretend to be in Love"
'anyone...90%' .. make up your mind lol
absolute bullshit, this song is just beautiful, full stop
